My friends and I have a debate all the time, half of us think the Chest of Sorrows sounds like a man crying, the other half think it sounds like a woman crying. What is your opinion on it? Man or Woman?
Chest of Sorrows Man or Woman?

Concept art before the games release showed a female variant of the chest.
But it's a man now so all we need to know is if it is a man or woman who was recorded crying for it.
@thegbr3 definitly a man...a woman crying with such a deep voice...when crying your voice goes more up than down...
It's a chest... it has no gender

Much in the same way that the Mermaid is not exactly clear when you swim to it if it's one way or the other or somewhere in-between.

I don't know if I can assume it's gender origins or it's gender similarities in it's vocal tonality. It's just easier for me to not think about it. Much in the same way that the Mermaid is not exactly clear when you swim to it if it's one way or the other or somewhere in-between.
Idk about you but the mermaids are pretty clear cut to me when you look at them
This was partially answered in a weekly stream:
Who's crying is used for the chest of sorrows audio?
Someone in audio, probably Vincent?
Neither and both.
The wail that emanates from the Chest of Sorrows is the combined lamentation of all the souls who have died with a broken heart on the Sea of Thieves.
All of their cries and shrieks combining into a single, nebulous sound of tragedy. Be wary pirate, lest your own wails join those pitiable souls.
