Myth or Truth - Sail angle

  • Ahoy!

Does anyone know for certain how is it with the sail angles against the wind. I don't mean the wind that is directly against you, but the one that is going diagonally, where you can't catch the wind with your sails to gain speed.

Is it better to leave them straight for maximum speed or adjust them towards the direction?

I heard so many mixed opinions that I am honestly confused regarding this one. And given how often the wind changes randomly, it's kind of hard to test accurately.

If you don't have billow, you don't have the most speed you can.

Unless you had to set for stupid.

  • @pithyrumble Obviously. What I meant what is faster with diagonal wind, straight sails or sails adjusted to the winds direction even tho you don't catch the wind?

  • Straight seems faster, but I take every excuse I can to angle my sails sonI can see forward.

  • @scheneighnay Same, but sometimes I wanna make sure that I can go as fast as possible, for example when chasing a running skeleton sloop. Also feels bad after 1000hours not knowing something that should be rather so basic :D

Skeleton ships don't obey any speed rules so catching them is up to luck regardless.

  • @scheneighnay I know, but they will stop eventually to spin around aimlessly and I just hope to trigger them when that moment comes.

  • If you dont catch any wind, square the sails up, if you catch a little wind then keep them angled as long as you are on a brig or galleon, but square the sales up with the sloop in that case.

Sloop is the only ship that does not go faster if its catching partial wind for what ever reason. But any case where the sails catch no wind, even if the wind is not head on.

    I found this

  • @burnbacon

Pretty sure brig is fastest in both crosswinds. That's how it catches sloopsm

  • @zig-zag-ltu depends on the ship type, for sloop if you cannot get full billow put the sails to stupid (default position)

For the brig and galleon if you can get even a bit of wind from a slight angle try to catch it with sail angle

  • @zig-zag-ltu

Well, logically it would be best to have your sails as into the wind as possible while going on your path so that way you can go even a little faster.

  • @devtryak logically yes, sot physics say no

  • @callmebackdraft

    True
