Ahoy!
You may have read the title and decided to come on here to say your six pence but hear me out.
I have been a seasoned veteran ever since Day 1 (I got the game 7 years ago on my birthday and played it a day after). I even got the Launch Crew Eye of Reach to provide my loyalty to this novelty naval experience and I've seen the game grow. It has matured so much that a lot of the newer crews should be thankful for the recent features that us old sea dogs would've benefit from during Year One.
Being a PvE guy, I never had the patience or care to hone my PvP skills so encountering hostility from other crews was mostly a death sentence for us but eventually, by the time the Hourglass came, we had already been garnering a sizeable killcount but before then, our souls cried out "We want no players to attack us!"
Now, that long-gone cry has been answered in the form of Safer Seas; Which had been released just yesterday at the time of this post.
So, I decided to give it a go, having known of the limits and restrictions it brings, which is completely understandable but... as soon as I appeared in the tavern. I instantly realised that this gamemode didn't feel finished. It was like some kind of solution to a small portion of players; The newer kind or family-orientated sort who would rather take their kids out to sea to explore this world without worry about other crews coming in to crash the party. (I get that.)
But, I have brainstormed some ideas and concepts that could really make Safer Seas a more viable and much more enjoyable experience to all; New or Seasoned, Legend of Not:
The Player that starts a Safer Seas Session should have some more control.
Let's face it, this is technically considered your Sea of Thieves and it would make sense that the pirate who first starts the gamemode should have some control over the world.
When they enter Safer Seas, before they are presented with the option to charter a ship, they should be presented with a list of options to tailor their experience for themselves, and other players:
- No. of Ship Slots: From 1 to 5.
- World Events: Wether or not should World Events appear in the world. (This would work well for Roleplayers)
- Random Encounters: Disable or Enable wether or not Megladons, Krakens or Emergent Skeleton Ships appear to attack players.
- Ambient Enemy Spawns: Enable or Disable AI enemies when on a island.
- Storm: Wether or not the Storm should scour over the world.
- Enable Captained Ships: Wether or not Captains can take out their Captain'd ship out on Safer Seas. (Progression towards milestones would naturally be disabled.)
- Privacy: Determine wether or not the server be available to the host's friends or not. (This is also an option in the My Crew Settings when sailing on Closed Crew Ships.)
Honestly, some of these options would be great for those hosting Glitterbeard Memorial Openings for players who hadn't got a chance to finish finding the Glitterbeard Journals.
The reasons for these suggestions is, for me, a bit personal:
I myself had the honour of sailing with RobRaven, who decided to give his followers a chance at opening Glitterbeard's Memorial together. However, when we neared another Brigatine moored at the outpost, they coldly griefed and sunk our ship out of their own pure amusement; Despite Rob kindly asking them to take part.I never had a chance at getting the last journal, because of this cruel selfish act, because I had to close my session for the day...
So, i hope that these suggestions be considered for an update and as an improvement to this potentially great gamemode. I honestly hope that one day that I can finally open the Memorial and get that last elusive journal.
Thanks for reading. :)
