Is there any hope on server performance?

  • Server performance has been poor for over a year when it was acknowledged in a news video back in november of 2023. It affects so many things. Are we going to stay the course like this and be miserable for the forseeable future? I'm sure it varies by region but all three locations of US East are trashy to play on.

Not really on my end. Maybe the water clips the ship or textures underwater but that about it.

  • I think it'll continue to be what it has long been.

    Keeps casual players happy enough.

Frustrating outside of casual and/or new play.

A lot of people in this game are just chilling or they are farming or they are stacking the deck to where they win 95+% of the time in a game without a lot of competition. The issues just don't cause as many issues for a lot of players.

Solos that are doing challenging stuff, some hgers, people that have expectations in this game, long term pvpers that have memories of what they view as the glory days of sot. Most of the frustration are in these groups and these are groups that are getting smaller as time goes on.

SoT is very likely always gonna be the game that struggles with performance but still makes most of the casual players happy, imo.

  • It's mostly smooth sailing.
But I can tell when someone's doing something big lol

    Florida/Series X/C&C preferred

  • It's very noticeable for a few weeks/month on US-East. Simply entering a crate or barrel results in immense lag. You can see your character shift and stutter and it's entirely because of the servers. You cannot grab items fluidly. It's simply awful performance, in fact the worst I have ever experienced in online gaming as of late.

Last I played was around a month ago. I'm NA-E and it felt like I was playing OCE. Had that barrel desync where you stow/remove food and it doesn't disappear/appear in your hand until a full second later. 5 boat (full, closed crews) naval in Arena, in EU, felt smoother.

Had I ignored the issues and continued to play regularly these last few years, I'd probably be as desensitized as @WolfManbush. Instead, it feels like I leave my hometown, come back to visit on holidays, and see how much the neighborhood has deteriorated. That one pot hole on that one road is still there, but now there's another one next to it and the sidewalk is sinking in.

To everyone there, it's still Hometown, USA. They're just happy they got a new Walgreens.

"Is there any hope?" I think it's okay to have hope. I just wouldn't hold my breath while doing so.

  • @karkona have you checked latency between your ISP and the game servers? There is a tool you can use to check called UOTrace. It could be a latency issue and not a server issue you’re having. [edited to add: I am on the east coast. I rarely have issues]

  • @renee-le-mom

It's not a latency issue. I have 1 gig fiber and have no trouble with any other game and my connection is very good with 0 packet loss.

If you rejoin the session it sometimes fixes it temporarily. Certain crates/barrels drop your fps. Some crates bring me down to 10-20 fps whereas others go down to 40-50 on the exact same server on my own ship. Even the island barrels are the same. Not sure what the issue is but it's widely known this is happening.

It might not be a server issue entirely as I thought as I see this on all stamps and rejoining has worked to solve it
