Settings don't save across game sessions.

  • Settings will not save across game sessions.

This has been an issue for years, and I'm not sure why there's been no response. All I'd like to see is an acknowledgement from Rare that this is something they intend to work on, or at least present a reason why they can't. If it isn't something rare is able to fix, that's totally fine and I understand, I just want to hear why. If it's a technical limitation of the servers they use, if it's Microsoft/Xbox related rather than Rare, or if it's some other unsolvable issue, players will literally understand, but please communicate that. What players hate is when there's just complete silence on an issue.

This post is not a request for help, seeing as the fix to this bug (eg. resetting settings page) does not work for me and many other players.

    First ive heard of it.

I assume you already send a Support Ticket? and they have yet to reply...Years?

seeing as the fix to this bug

I find a fresh 100% reinstall tends to fix a lot.

Yes. It has been years - well, a year and half. I reported the problem in March 2023 (Ticket #499428). The issue can affect any setting in the game, but at the time I submitted it for the Milestones settings not persisting. The game would show the correct setting but the game wouldn't reflect it until it was toggled off and on.

When I put in my ticket, their "fix" was to reset all settings to default at the bottom of each menu, reboot the game and then quit and reboot a third time. This did not fix it in my case and the response was:

Thank you for trying our previous troubleshooting steps. When having issues with your game settings not saving, reverting all settings to default will normally solve the issue. I have just tried this in-game and I am also receiving the same issue, so I believe that you have found a bug with this functionality. Due to this I am now going to raise a bug report with the team for further investigation. As I am unable to provide any further solutions I am going to close your ticket, but please keep an eye on our social channels for any news on a fix:

Since then, the Milestones have been fixed for me but some settings still don't persist - such as the name visibility settings. The rise in people noticing the issue is likely down to folks rebinding because of the new features (crouch, dart radial, etc...).

And, as for a fresh install, I've rebuilt my PC since then and I have both the Steam and Microsoft Store versions installed. Both versions have the same issue.

  • If you need an alternative solution to resetting you can do the following:

    • Go to the main menu

    • If you want to change a MnK keybind go to controller and reset to default

    • If you want to change a controller keybind go to Keyboard and mouse and reset to default

    • Change your desired setting and it will persist across session

It's a gimmick solution that requires to change your settings in the main menu for them to persist but it can be useful if you can't be bothered to reset all settings every time it bugs out or if the main fix doesn't work.

  • @burnbacon I have done all of the above, and yes when I say years, I really mean years. I would argue that you're lucky if you haven't had this issue at some point in time. Either that, or you never change your settings.

I find a fresh 100% reinstall tends to fix a lot.

This also does not work. This bug exists across all platforms I've played, (Xbox, Microsoft Store, and Steam.) settings do not persist across any of them.

@riahi-jr I appreciate the help, unfortunately this doesn't work for me. It really at this point just requires attention from rare to fix. Thanks for your advice though :)

  • @sxthyt

Same thing for me for quite a long time. Aim assist refuses to stay off and recently every ADS settings revert back to my old settings. Pretty annoying each server I have to change this even though I haven't even closed Sea of Thieves.

  • I've got this, frustratingly since I muted other crews and cranked music down
