Hourglass

  • In sea of thieves there is chance that in hourglass you will get an encounter with some kind of third party interference. For example other ships, megalodons, etc. We should please make some kind of arena for hourglass.

  • @vader-astro yeah, that's pretty commonly requested

  • We should please make some kind of arena for hourglass.

No. Rare designed hourglass as it is. Third part is welcome to the pvp

You signed up to battle. You are getting battle and little extra if a third party joins. What the issue? Too much PvP?

  • it's like 1/100 matches that happens, and if it does you can usually just team on the third party and get back to it after. Not really worth the dev time imo.

  • I don't think people should spawn for an hg fight with an active super meg.

It'll be scaled up and not avoidable, people can work around everything else but the meg essentially will just choose which one wins or loses in a competitive match and will be too much pressure on a casual hger.

That's one of the few things that I think shouldn't be on the table at the beginning of an HG match.

  • @burnbacon why is every response to an hourglass suggestion just “no because that’s not how it is now”

Of course it isn’t, it’s a suggestion for change

    Working as intended.

No. Hourglass is not meant to be a guaranteed 1v1. It's a tool to find open-world PvP.
And open world means you have the same chances of being PvE'd or 3rd partied as any open-world PvP.

    1. Because Rare already stated that that is the way it is meant to function and that they want to keep it that way.
    2. Because the impact for the change you want is to damaging for the rest of the players. If you would turn it into an arena no-one can enter, you would close of part of the world for everyone else on that server, wich could lead to (some of) them not being able to do their voyages. That is way more hurtful and impacts way more players then that hourglass player that gets a (intended risk of a) third party. On top of that, that non-hourglass player would then have to wait outside the arena for perhaps a very long while (some matches can take hours), wich could make their voyage or quest time out. But even when they don't time out, then the arena drops after the match and then that player is at risk of being attacked, or the hourglass player still complains about being 'third partied', because they were still repairing from the fight and still consider that unfair..... So it doesn't even realy solve anything, it goes against the intended goal stated by Rare and it hurts other players.
  • @super87ghost I don't think there should be a locked arena, streaks should just not be awarded nearly as much, since you can be destined to lose when diving into an impossible match. If winning trends were awarded instead, it wouldn't hurt nearly as much when bs happens.

You could also get free supplies when diving so that losses hurt even less, then there'd also be an incentive to dive to hourglass for free supplies. Losses just hurt peoples mental too much due to how hourglass is designed

  • @captain-knyt I think streaks are fine. It's a good mix of risk and reward, and many people have found comfort in just going to two and lowering. It gives a nice goal while giving good regular intervals to evaluate continuing or stopping. And for good players they usually opt to just keep a streak going and pushing their limits, which gives great rewards if they don't lose.

As for set supps, that would make HG so much better. IDK why it's not in the game already.

  • Arena was taken down because it wasn't worth maintaining it compared to how much players used it. That's why HG takes places in adventure, and with that, comes the possibility that you get 3rd partied. I'm currently over 700 in Servants, and can't remember the last time it happened to me. If I see other ships battling with HG, I leave them alone as I believe it's proper etiquette, but that's just me. So, we have on-demand pvp, but with that comes the possibility you might get 3rd partied. It's the price we pay, and is intended now.

  • @captain-knyt

Change to what and why? Because you hate the outside world disturbing you?

Until they change the wording or make an official statement about hourglass function

It will always be as it was. Instant PvP in an open world. What happens in the open world will happen.

What next on the block? Volcanoes shouldn’t erupt when in hourglass turned on? Or shouldn’t be able to use fortress cannons but your ships XD
(I’ve done these things) and watching a Meg or skeleton I was fighting earlier turn its attention to the ship that wanted pvp suddenly have to deal with it as well. It perfect

  • Hg is NOT arena. Hg is on demand pvp, which means it is in the open world. Not only are 3rd parties getting in on the fight going to happen, it’s intentional. I’m sorry if you don’t like it but thats the way it is. Personally I love when 3rd parties interrupt my hg fight because it makes it more interesting, even if it screws me over. Now I have a funny story to tell to my friends.

  • @captain-knyt it’s a typical bacon response

  • I agree with third party interference being unfair. The amount of times I've wanted to play a 1v1 (granted mine is a 2 person sloop) vs another sloop (which could be 1-2 players), with the only option PvP being Hourglass, having another ship roll up and immediately take the opposing side depending on their faction is stupid! You're facing double the amount of players (AT LEAST) and unless your two player crew is better in PvP than two 4-6 player crews, you lose. This isn't casual or competitive PvP, it is a free win depending on who picks who's side and singles out people who want to PvP, but aren't good enough. I hope Rare can make changes/additions to the current PvP system to make it more fair for people trying to enjoy PvP. (Apologies for the long statement, Sea of Thieves is truly a great game, but they should AT LEAST give another option for closed-off PvP for those who don't want interference.)

  • As others have said, third parties are rare and not worth putting in dev time.

Also, if we're taking a 'fairness' approach to rationalize the dev time this would require, then I think a far more impactful factor would be supplies and how that can vary drastically between opponents. In an extreme example, one crew can have nothing but stock supplies while the other crew can have enough cannonballs, chains, & pineapples to fuel a Spanish armada. While captaincy supplies & resource crates somewhat mitigate this issue, being on a roll and having the supplies of five sunken crews is incredibly powerful.

  • @youbetchaguy873

Keep in mind, it doesn't have to be this way. I recently watched a video of Mixel doing solo HG, and when he met his opponent, a galleon came over to 3rd party. Mixel asked his opponent if he wanted to team up to take out the galleon, his opponent agreed, and it was an amazing display of teamwork and cooperation. The 2 of them are on the galleon killing them, with Mixel checking on both sloops from time to time.
In the end, galleon sunk, and Mixel gave the win to his opponent.
