March Update - State of Play

  • Hey Everyone,

With our Mid-Season Update launching yesterday, I wanted to drop in and share a few updates on where we are prioritising our efforts following the update.

    Game Performance
We've seen fairly consistent reports that with March's update players are feeling a performance regression and not the improvements that we expected. There's been some sizeable changes behind the scenes here, from rebuilding of ships through to treasure and trinket optimisations. While change often comes with some risks, we're disappointed that this hasn't delivered the positive results we'd hoped for, especially after such an improved February update.

The team is already investigating as a priority, digging into live servers and client reports to try and identify the root cause of the impact. Though there is some correlation with those most affected running AMD hardware, further investigation is currently required. I have no news to share on this heading into the weekend, but the team is focusing on this as a priority, as we can clearly see the impact it is having on your sessions.

We hope to update players once we have more information.

    Hunting Spear
With the introduction of our latest throwable, we've been reviewing the feedback and bug reports and the team has begun working on addressing these issues.

We quickly saw ships sailing around like porcupines littered with spears and reports of a clear item duplication issue surfaced. The team has temporarily reduced the gold and reputation rewards for handing in these spears while we address the duplication, so feel free to use those spears on your enemies rather than hoarding them for sale!

The team is also working on a fix for the issue where players can sometimes become unable to aim down sights after throwing a hunting spear.
Outside of bugs, the team is monitoring the feedback on how this new throwable is settling in as part of the balance across the broader experience. Nothing to share here yet but rest assured the team is seeing your feedback.

    Hunter's Call Reputation Corrections
The various Hunter's Call Reputation Corrections (both exploit progress removal and prior missing progress) have now all been completed. These weren't able to be completed during the maintenance window on March 27th, but as of this post all players should now be sitting on their correct Hunter's Call reputation.

    Other Issues
Wrapping up some of the other issues we've seen:

    • Inconsistent delivery of hunting spears purchased from the HC representatives is being investigated.
    • Pet Pigs in Outfits displaying visual issues at distance are being fixed.
    • The Lightbearer Pistol is getting tweaks to its aim to better align with its iron sights.
    • The Jagged Jaws Throwing Knives were delivered earlier than planned and will require Commendations due in our April update before they can be unlocked.
Then finally we are still seeing some players not receiving the Regal Duke Ship Set after purchasing the Sea of Thieves X Edition - the team is aware and working on addressing the issue so we can get these items into your hands!

While this clearly isn't an exhaustive list of everything we've seen, it should help demonstrate where we're focusing our efforts following the update.

Thanks again for all the feedback and bug reports so far as we've rolled out our latest update - our priority is tracking down these reported performance issues and getting us back into a good place!

  • AMD hardware, that explains the massive frame drops that would go from 300 to 24 randomly in pvp. thanks for the update!

  • ships sailing around like porcupines littered with spears

And what the issue here? XD

  • I’m not on any AMD hardware and I still get massive frame drops since the update

  • PS5 has been crashing due to voice comms since release btw...

  • Really appreciate the focus on game performance and health, especially the fix where after long sessions, barrel or inventory interactions would cause major performance drops. This is needed and hopefully we see more of this dedication in the long run to ensure the stability of the Sea of Thieves.

  • AMD CPU here and yeah the game feels like I'm running in sludge way more than before

4090 GPU and lots of framerate drops

  • Good to have such a quick response to the update yesterday. Thank you!

  • Running SteamDeck currently ( believe it runs AMD) and have notice an increased drop sitting at 20 fps for large periods of time.

  • Glad the performance issues were mentioned. I am running an AMD CPU (7800X3D) too, though not GPU (RTX 5090), and have had some huge drops since yesterday. The game would already hitch a lot before this update but since then I’ve had my frame rate randomly drop to sub-30fps and stutter constantly for 5-10 seconds, then return to normal for a while and do it again later. Seems to be on the CPU side though as usual with this game. It runs well on the GPU.

  • Intel CPU, Nvidia GPU, also experiencing the frame drops - genuinely worse performance than I ever had on my ancient Nvidia 960M. They're so severe it made me nauseated yesterday and I had to take a break. Restarting the game periodically seemed to help some. This has to be the top priority because it's rendered the game frequently unplayable.

  • Honestly, if trinkets are causing an issue in performance, remove them or limit the number. Certainly don't need the mechanic where they get tilted and need correcting.

  • I can say as far as series x play there seems to have been no improvement in server performance even in last months update. There is still tons of lag, rubberbanding, stuttering and desyncing.

Also at least from a mobile standpoint as idk about pc can we make the background of the writing not light gray with white writing. Its a horrible color choice and not easy to read. Just go with black background white writing like the replies

  • Thanks for the heads up on what the team is working/focusing on. It’s great that you guys always keep us in the loop. 🏴‍☠️🖤

  • I've been spending time in Safer Seas because of the performance issue, as it seems to be related to being around other crews (as alluded to). Hopefully, you can find a fix for this soon.

    specs: AMD Ryzen 7 7700X, RTX 3070ti, 32GB DDR5 RAM, Windows 10 22H2

  • Played 3 hours this morning, no issues on AMD CPU/GPU.

  • @sonicbob Is there a way to add an item we can buy at the seapost side store to always be able to bug fix the harpoon buy? I know for many of us visiting and trying to restock the go to self-fix is Go buy something from a store to fix the merchant crate buys. I know you and the great team is working for a long time solution to these cheesy old smelly pirates, but for the common man just trying to buy restock of spears a cheap item in the clothing store might go along way to help. o7 Either way thanks for the update we will hunt down the Sea porgiespines

  • 64 levels added to HC. Thank you SO MUCH!

  • @zapliquid same here

  • I have an AMD CPU but my GPU is RTX and it wouldn’t even let me open the game. I’m working on redownloading now but it’s super frustrating. :-/

  • I hope after solving the performance issue, Rare prioritize the anticheats. Its already season 15 and yet cheaters can blatantly cheat

  • @siagjaw I completely agree with you, that's very true. I hope they improve it.

  • Not to be negative but:

    • performance is worst in year + for me.
Redial menu is constantly freezing, laging and stucking it's hard to swap from map to shovel.
Changing cannoballs type mid salvo is near impossible.
    • hit reg get worse - i saw less server side hit confrimation than usually.
    • fps drops near all outposts.

    Edit:

    • sail sound effects tend to clip or sutter-reapet when seagulls appear.

Maybe it's something with other crews?

    Overall choppiest feeling.

    I run laptop i9+rtx4080

  • I can’t even enjoy the game no more if this development team can’t fix 2 main important issues I’ve recently reported about!!! Everybody might be experiencing this same issue with buying crates from every merchant people I can’t grab from them cuz it’s bugged out and also the audio chest sound when u don’t have a chest on your back getting out of the water is seriously annoying!!!! Like please love of god I’m not asking again I gave u my reports already please take care of it!!

  • Submitted this video to showcase the framerate drops I've started experiencing with v3.3.1 that I otherwise wouldn't get. My framerate is usually stable at Port Merrick - I can hit 120fps without other crews and it's not too bad even with other crews there. The drops to 20-40fps are definitely atypical and you can see they're even occuring on a stationary boat (no load hitching) while I'm looking away from the port.

  • @ghutar I don’t know if it helps, but for the radial wheel delay/lag open Task Manager and close Omen application that solved it for me

  • @seadog1776 Yeah im pretty sure they've given up on that, Much like the other issues that have been in the game since release. Rares moto is If it is broken, It can stay broken. They spend a month trying to fix something, then have to focus on the new update thats going to break more stuff anyway. Its absurd. Maybe one day they will actually do what their videos say they are going to do, And just stop the content updates for a while and focus on actually fixing stuff, instead of delivering us hope through videos / States of play / Developer Updates, And then the update comes out and its a complete 180 on what they said, And then they forget about the issue and move on.

  • Full day.
Xbox User (console only), No issues. Heck the issue with the water I use to have is gone so I'm happy about that.
    idk about PS though.

  • Did a Barnacled Dread fight on High Seas this evening, no ships around me that I could see but the game client stuttered a lot. FPS counter was stable though, as was the Ping, but it felt like really bad frame pacing for several minutes towards the end of the fight. I went to sell at Port Merrick and experienced the same thing but with the FPS counter dropping significantly while selling.

  • FPS drops on Intel too, not just on AMD.

  • Any update on the controller binding bug to be fixed? I can’t use more than one action on any button and it’s been broken since November’s patch. Multiple tickets as well

  • I'm on AMD hardware. Sea forts are always a huge hit to fps, and hourglass is infuriating when it comes to hit registration or bucket registration. By bucket registration, I mean it's not uncommon for me to bucket out of my ship and it doesn't work. It honestly feels like most of it isn't even fps issues, rather just like a netcode one or something.

  • I got over 100 levels today from the adjustment.
hopefully that wasn't intended? i killed a lotttt of sharks tho during the first week or so that the update was out.
I'm sure my play-style is an outlier in the grand scheme, but I didn't want this rep. I'd personally rather have the log arduous grind of endgame content that HC used to represent. waking up with a whole extra distinction def doesn't feel earned to me...

  • Something that wasn’t touched on that I wish would have been HUNTING SPEARS:
Will we see a change in the future of being able to buy all 5 spears at a HC rep at once or will it stay as individual items?
Will there be a change to allow players to dive with spears?
I’ve seen a lot of discussion on Twitter and Reddit of players thinking the hunting spear will just become another forgotten item because of how out of the way the spears feel not being able to dive or even store them anywhere there just kinda there. I think it would be a great QoL update if one of the random barrels on a ship allowed you to store spears and allow you to dive, but not just be a closed off barrel but one that’s maybe open with spears pointing out would look pretty cool on a pirate ship. This is just an idea of mine would be pretty cool but I guess I get the original design of spears in a way.

  • I raised a ticket already but the 'Restore' function at shipwright isn't working, my ship doesn't repair, stays 'dinged' up but changes visual after each dive, sometimes mast has planks on it, sometimes not, same with the ships wheel etc
