The sniper

  • By now some of you should have seen the announcement trailer and the sniper that was shown idk how to feel about it. I like the close combat and the more do it ur self with the sniper in the game I feel it’s gonna ruin the close quarters battles cause people will just camp on their ships and snipe. Because there will be those try hards who can make the impossible shots. I hope it holds less ammo or I wish the scope wasn’t there I would be much happier without the scope but what are ur guys opinions?

  • @ods7-117 I dont think it will be that much of a problem. Just remember: When you are on the boat, everything moves. And when you want to hit someone on another boat, they will move too. When you want to hit someone on an island, he will probably have some rocks etc. to take cover

  • @jcmdeadpool same could be said for many other games and a lot of games get ruined with long range weapons because than it allows people to just camp far away and it just turns into a sniper battle

  • I think the sniper does not belong to that game because it ruins the idea. I think pirates like this never used snipers in real life because they didn't have them.
So my opinion is that: Sniper does not belong to Sea of Thieves.

  • @oneplum5515568 yes thank you I feel the same way but then it could be said that it’s not a simulation game cause we can shoot people out of cannons but that’s just meant to get closer snipers prevent that cause it allows people to stay away

  • i hope the range isn't crazy long as it will just be a battle of who has the better aim and takes the fun of the close quarter fights. That was something i was really hyped for but rare are known for making great games i'm sure they will nail it and if they don't they can always nerf the sniper.

  • @ods7-117 Hm. I want to stick with my moving boat idea, so its probably hard to

camp on their ships and snipe.

However, it could be a problem if you are hiding on an island, but I don't know because I didnt play the game yet and I didnt fired one single shot with the sniper.

  • @ods7-117 I like the idea of a sniper rifle but can see your point maybe less ammo is a good idea and longer load time and only basic sight no scope as this would fit the with the age the game is set in ☠

  • @mad8oyz they can keep it but maybe get rid of the scope or the crack in the scope that helps u aim

  • @mad8oyz I like your comment, took an unexpected turn :D

  • @jcmdeadpool thanks :)

  • @oneplum5515568 They did have rifles but no scopes ☠

  • @ods7-117 yeah that would be really cool if rare did that

  • I'm eager to see how it will work as I can't imagine you'll be able to carry one along with a blunderbuss. Hopefully we'll see a decent variety of weapons introduced, each with their own pros/cons, that we'll be able to swap in-and-out of the current 3 slots for more unique loadouts. Should be fun seeing the sniper in action.

That said, I'm incredibly skeptical of how they plan to balance it from a crossplay perspective. I don't see how they plan to make it work the same mechanically without putting Xbox users at a pretty massive disadvantage. I'll probably have a pretty strong opinion on whether it belongs or not once I try it myself.

  • @oneplum5515568 Hi there. I’m sorry but pirates did have some sort of sniper rifles. Not sure if they used it extensively, but those rifles existed at that time.

  • @mcsinker
Yea the typical military long rifle

  • my theorie is: They were annoyed by the skeletons shooting at you with their cannons, so they decided to introduce the sniper rifle, but they are not aware of the impact it might have on pvp game-play. As I mentioned earlier they should consider to differentiate between PvP damage and Pve damage, so the damage dealt to players is reduced.

    Edit:
When it comes to history: Pirates used smoothbore firearms, no matter how long their barrels might were they would not have been accurate enough to be considered as "sniper-rifles". Bored barrels started to become wide spread in 19th century.

  • I definitely think that its going to be rounded out. have a little faith. the reload speed is probably going to be horrendous, and the range, accuracy and even damage probably wont be nearly the power of a "modern sniper rifle."

  • I think the real problem isn’t with the gun but with the scope the gun can just be the standard issue musket but the scope is wat really is gonna to ruin the game

  • @ods7-117 I love the idea of a musket! It's such a beautiful weapon! A lot of games have "a sniper problem" I just don't want this game get ruined by snipers also. :(
I wish we could get rid of the scope for once...

  • Sniper is just another tool.

Learning to deal with it (use/avoid) will be as challenging as all the other tools at our disposal in the game.

As some already mentioned, snipping isn't as easy as it might seem to the "snipped" and you'll see for yourself, trying to aim on a moving ship at another moving ship is quite a feat. Even aiming from ship to land or land to ship will be challenging unless both are still and that will make any of them easier targets to both parties.

Players will learn to be less exposed when on dry land if there's ships around that place or if there are good snipping spot on the island itself.

It should be a useful tool to deal with island skel cannons (at least the more exposed ones) and also fun to use when "merchant" ships full of exploding barrels on open deck, just waiting for a good shot to be made ;)

  • I think it's a bad idea, it will take away alot of the close quarter action.
Sure there were rifles/muskets but definately no scope. They have to be single shot v.slow reload and at least a mid range so you can still see the whites of their gamertag. There is nothing more tedious than being killed without any clue where the shot came from.

I guess it would add another level when at sea battling side by side shooting across to the other ship due to wave motion. Also handy shooting the skellies manning the cannons of insane range.
The problem would be high up on islands looking down onto ships coming to anchor where that motion won't come into play or trained on the guilds waiting for those cashing in. I don't particularly want to be bothered with too much Tom Clancy style sneaking.

I can't write it off just yet I'm sure they'll find a good balance, I'm just not a fan, why do they have to be in practically every game. I know they're not going to be in the same class/range but I played a lot of games with my young nephews over Christmas and sniper rifles was all they talked about. If it had them in it that's all they picked. If the game didn't have it in they weren't interested. I got sooo bored of it I failed trying to convince them of more creative games. I could almost be paranoid in saying I wouldn't be surprised if it was a contractual obligation to have them in.A sad state...

  • I would enjoy a sniper in the game so long as it is rounded out like previously said. Basically you have one or two shots and if you miss your chance the opposed should have had enough time to close the gap unless at sea. With that said if your battling on tides then I doubt anyone will be able to make many shots unless the sea is dead calm.

  • maybe the game will allow us to cary only one or 2 weapons in the same time at the end... if so have a sword and a long rifle will give us trouble again blunderbuss ... blunderbuss and sword give trouble again guns... gun and snipe got trouble agains swords and blunderbuss... etc what do you thinks? :)

  • Imo the scope is what will balance the gun, and hip fire will most likely be really inaccurate or disabled altogether because of the scope. I dont like crossplay balancing in general and would prefer different servers, but to say that players being good with a sniper using the term "tryhard" just makes me laugh. Yeah they have skill and try to use it... whats the point of having a weapon at all if its either useless or too good, if players can try hard and thats what makes the gun useful, that means it is at a good balance imo. Its still early to be saying anything but i understand your fears, but i bet the gun will have a very long reload, and not be as accurate as people are thinking.

  • @a-cranky-eskimo yes try hard is a very wierd term lol. If your playing the game is everyone not a try hard then? You can't assume someone good is a try hard lol.

  • It will ruin the game during the history of pirates and privateers snipers were not a thing close combat was what it was all about.

  • @ods7-117 I agree with @kermar-tutu , if they make it so you can only carry 1 or 2 of the weapons at a time, it'll make things pretty fair and interesting

in all honesty we havent played with it yet either. now yes, will there be that guy that can headshot you from 100 yards in a storm on a moving ship? yeah but only the most skilled will be able to pull something like that off even on the best day, i wouldnt be too worried about something like this

  • I can't wait to have a go at sniping the helmsman on a ship we're chasing from the crows nest.

    A Musket Sniper ;)

  • Personally I'm all for the long range for several reasons:

Firstly the long barreled rifle shown above along with similar musket style weapons did exist in part of the pirate age. They were more accurate than pistols (often due to the two handed use over the actual design of it).

Secondly its about time we had some more variety to open more styles of play, if you want to remove the rifle why not remove the blunderbus, it's a short distance weapon that clearly supercedes the sword so by above mentioned logic wont the game turn into a shotgun breach fest?
The answer is no, the rifle is a great addition to the game and offers varied gameplay along with potential grenades and boarding axes that i see requested all over the place.

Finally yes i am one of those die hard combat snipers, and if i can hit you with a sniper shot from around 10 + ship lengths away on bobbing water in high winds whilst still maintaining my own ship you gotta accept that my aim earns me access to your treasure (although with the respawn time you'll be back on deck before i get there)

  • I'm not sure myself. Even though I have no idea how it would be balanced, the only thing I don't like about it is that I don't really see it "fitting" with the setting, even though it's a fantasy game.

  • 4 snipers + crow's nest = your whole team dead

4 snipers + camping in an outpost = your whole team dead

the sniper makes trolling, spawncamping and griefing sooooo much easier. wait until an enemy ship drops the anchor and just have your whole team kill them on spawn, you have infinite bullets on your ship so you can do it easily.

after you kill the whole enemy team a few times they will give up and scuttle their ship, you can jump and grab the chests they had.

it's gonna be fun to troll people with snipers

  • When being chased by another crew, I can see the sniper rifle being more reliable than the cannons. Perfect for solo, cant wait :)

  • I feel it be 5 shots and remember it a musket style load so won’t be an automatic sniper shooting you. I feel this will give you the element to hide or get in close to attack. I feel it will be balanced this way ok
