And the claim this place is filled only with sycophants is also absurd.

    Strawmans are cool.

I replied to another poster's hyperbolic post with a contrary but equally hyperbolic post. You pointed out the absurdity of my post and I agreed it was ridiculous. This is as meta as I plan to be today.

  • @drunkpunk138
No, this is an actual good post.
Why you felt the need to add that last part is absolutely baffling to me though.

    @Ghostpaw
"h-haha, I was merely pretending to be...!"

  • I 100% agree with OP and don't really understand the people opposed to it to be honest. Currently, if you encounter the Kraken or Meg it's just an eye rolling situation of "Oh f*s not this again, what a waste of time."

The main argument against it seems to be "We need more consequences not rewards!" which is relates to this topic about as much as a duck relates to an aircraft carrier, because one of the main problems with the game at the moment is 'incentive' which fighting the Kraken and Meg have 0 of.

I'm sure it wouldn't kill them game if beating either of these bosses dropped a small Trinket that would be able to be sold to the Bilge Rat for 10 Doubloons or something.

@drunkpunk138 you can't farm the Kraken in the same way though. Not adding a Kraken eye and a Meg tooth "because server hoppers" is intellectually dishonest.

Fair enough, my comment was more directly related to what I responded to than the overall discussion. The two-part nature of your question doesn't diminish the truth in my response.

    I understand, that is true.

And I get giving incentive for doing those multiple times to a degree.

It's simply this. The Kraken after a few times loses all mystique and you quickly realize it's not even a fight, let alone a hindrance unless you choose to waste time on it.

Some threats in the world, though, should simply be an addition to the experience. Perhaps if they ever flesh out the kraken to more of a real fight, I'll understand a reward (would especially be cool if they implemented the whole cosmetic reward with kraken parts thing they talked about ages ago). Until then I just don't really see why it's needed.

It's a major missed opportunity to not deepen the emergent experiences in this game. To say that the game should have threats outside of rewards makes sense, if the game was fully fleshed out with content though... It's not, so I see this as laziness and bad direction.

  • @xcalypt0x said in Does the Megalodon... Kraken 2.0:

@gloog Wow. I cannot believe that Rare ignored one of the topics that has garnered the most feedback, the lack of a reward from Karen, and made the same mistake with Megan.

Fighting Karen is simply unfun after the first time. It's a waste of resources and time. The only time it is somewhat fun is when you are running from another ship and it adds pressure to a high intensity situation. But even still, she becomes annoying.

Adding a reward to both will make the encounters so much more fun. Knowing that you have the opportunity to gain something makes the encounters feel special since you can't really seek them out. It becomes an "Oh boy! Here's my chance!" moment.

    I'm a little disappointed Rare...

    thank you

I am glad you are still active here. I got jumped on initially..

  • @gloog Yep, still active :) Won't go down till the ship sinks lol.

Totally agree with you though. I think Rare has been doing a good job listening to feedback but they fumbled here.

  • I'll never understand the logic of having nothing drop from killing these creatures. Who at Rare thinks that's a good idea? It's like they're actually trying to drive players away from this game. It could be something as simple as a few captain chests that spawn in the water. But no...

  • Guys, give time to time, this game is growing and by September it will be awesome and what comes afterwards still a mystery. 'Till then we all can get some reputation to enjoy it to the maximum. :D

  • I'm fine with no loot. Usually when the Kraken spawns, the instant rush to arm ourselves and protect our loot is more than enough of an excitement.

Commendations as a reward for actually defeating it X time would be a great addition and incentive to stick around and actually finish the fight though!

Also the Krakens need to be a little more dangerous, of course.

  • I didn't actually read all of it.. But i killed the Meg 5 Mins ago, alone, with a Blunderbuss. Rare? The Meg isn't working well, he's bugged. Just follows my sloop and transformed it into a Speedboat. Carrying me 20 miles, while i shoot him or her.. After the Meg was dead, his body was gone. Maybe a fast fix will do it. ;) By the way.. no title? Nothing for killing it? It is possible i am the world first.. and the first Solo kill?

  • @musicmee Kinda like the Skull Fort? I say let us get some gold from the Kraken and Meg, 1200-1500gp for killing them would do nothing to hurt anyone. And considering they are random, its much harder to abuse them. Not like you can Farm them. You can however server hop and farm skull forts. I mean they only spawn in 3 spots, give way more gold and give rep, something that Kraken and Meg won't. I don't really see how this can be abused.

  • @hereticake
    woaw u r amazing.

  • I think the kraken and Megan would do just fine being stronger and have no reward tied to them, if tomorrow we had content. Content now or incentive now!

  • Indeed.. my Friend. Indeed. I am literally the first real Pirate Legend.. (sarcasm off)

  • Just seen this on Facebook... this would certainly add to the challenge!

  • @lenny2k3 sagte in Does the Megalodon... Kraken 2.0:

Why do you want a reward though? You cannot even actively hunt these creatures.

"Reward" and "Actively hunt" are two things with absolutely no necessary relation.
You would get the reward for defeating it, not for farming it.

@lenny2k3 sagte in Does the Megalodon... Kraken 2.0:

If the game had actual penalties, the kraken and Megs would be way "scarier" because they could be the reason for making it or not.

Anyway, now there is only one choice: Dont do it, because you have no benefit from it.
    (Funny stories aside)

  • psst... reward for beating the meg.. I've said it a million times. I don't understand unrewarding game design.

  • @Lenny2k3 Please refrain from using cancer as an insult and in a derogatory fashion. It is a very sensitive subject for a great many people whose lives are affected by it, and we ask that pirates remain respectful toward one another per our Forum rules.

  • I've not encountered meg since it's been added to the actual game, but i've been hoping for something more than another kraken type encounter. But honestly, how can you say that SoT has a shallow gameplay loop? I've seen you everywhere on this forum since launch, don't come here and tell me you think this game is shallow lol..

You caught me fair and square @Skritsarn. Setting me straight 😁 I've fixed it accordingly

I suppose I can say, in the context of the kraken/meg being current useless annoyances, it's very difficult for me to understand why RARE would miss this opportunity to enrich the game.

  • The kraken and megalodon need some sort of gold reward. Period. People would actually be excited for these things popping up if they offered any reward. But instead I get the "oh, not this again" reaction from my crew.

  • Since release players have been wanting their encounter with the kraken to be meaningful.

A common theme here is for the meg to be a meaningful encounter.

Emergent encounters are a huge selling point every time a dev talks about SoT. Why are they so pointless then? After X amount of times they become entities that noone wants to see. It's equivalent to being against the wind for an entire voyage 😂

  • I always sail out.

    Silly Kraken.
    Cannonballs are for kids.

  • Why not get a reward?
Now the Kraken and Megalodons are just there, it's nice to have some addition to the world but that's it.

Give them like a merchant reward, like we have Stronghold rewards for GH and OoS.

The Kraken gives a part of the tentacle or something.
The Megalodon gives an eye or a tooth.

This is just a small addition but will benefit the both of them being in the game

  • @lenny2k3 I would argue that the game needs content that provides a reason to come back and keep playing.

  • @trophy-un1ocked
Which I am not denying. I am a very vocal (minority) person on this forum, in regards to lack of content and actual gameplay (and not stupid, useless "gameplay" like handing each other bananas). OP's complaint on the other hand, is not justified at all.

  • Sorry i was responding to this post you said, then I sort of paraphrased instead of clarifying.

    @Gloog
Why do you want a reward though? You cannot even actively hunt these creatures.

So the reason why I feel a reward should exist, is because it gives you a reason to WANT to fight it when it actually happens. As it stands if you have fought either of them once, you might as well have fought them a hundred times. Sure the first time you experience it you get a cool story or get "the feels." but thats it. Anything beyond the first fight you (or me in this case) just don't care and will sail out of it and avoid it.

I don't recall if it was this thread or another on this particular topic but they said "the journey makes the best rewards." I disagree, Rewards make the best rewards.

I don't want it to be something you can actively hunt, they should still be random encounters. But should you succeed at said encounter there should be some left over reward, skulls/glinting treasure/messages in bottles (that reward better than average loot) Something... Otherwise people will just avoid it because it slows down their voyages.

Seriously this game doesn't need more rewards. There's no risk to anything, since there's no cost and no penalty to anything. If the game had actual penalties, the kraken and Megs would be way "scarier" because they could be the reason for making it or not.

Hopefully their AI system is "learning" like they stated earlier and these encounters get tougher over time, I don't know. But you are right in the sense these "threats" aren't very threatening.

There's just no thrill in this game, because your ships are practically immortal and even if you go full sudoku, you still lose nothing.

I mean i guess? The only thrill is when your hunting players, or being hunted IMO (and even still only when you have loot*)

But to paraphrase, they should change/add/update these mythical monster encounters so there is a reason to fight back, vs sail and evade.

  • I think that's one of the biggest problems in the game, there should be some kind of reward for killing skeletons, fighting sharks, fighting Kraken, fighting big teeth here.

They just need to balance the turning in of rewards to even it out. That way you earn rewards in many ways, and replay ability for doing these encounters.

  • This is all nothing but a precursor to them introducing Sharknadoes

  • @nacmine said in Does the Megalodon... Kraken 2.0:

    @gloog bragging rights.

Hardly worth bragging about the Kraken...

Id like to see the Kraken and the meg also fight each other.

  • The Meg and Kraken are more forces of nature than "boss monsters" right now. Whether or not that'll change in the future is up in the air right now.

Besides, both are incredibly rare random encounters. Why add "re-playability" to something that the players don't even know if they'll encounter on a given day. I personally haven't seen the Kraken in a couple weeks.

  • I think these high level bosses need some kind of reward, gold or some kind of loot, like in any other game of similar genres...but to be honest it's not a gamebreaker if they haven't.

...but as a solo player I didn't meet them too many times, kraken never, megalodon three times. They are still thrilling for me.

Uhhh what's not reasonable about wanting players to participate in 2 out of the 3 emergent events ? 🤔

Incredibly rare random encounter, no reason to care when they are encountered. Hmm..
