Help get rid or toxic players

  • Allow the captain of the ship to remove teams this would help with toxic players and trolls. Its unfair to have to leave the game because they refuse to leave and ruin everything.

  • Allow the captain of the ship to remove teams

    Explain.
What would you say the requirements would be for the Captain to kick someone and the crewmate. Does the crewmate need to have not moved for some time? Damage ship? Not use a weapon?

What is stopping a harmless crewmate, joining someone and playing a solid. Get a nice hoard and doesnt get to reap the rewards because "My friends getting on, so you got to go" Kicked.
Turning the captain into a Toxic/Troll.

Its unfair to have to leave the game because they refuse to leave and ruin everything.

Its unfair to play with someone and be kicked later without getting any of the Rep.

  • @tjjazzy1962 this power would be abused and Rare have mentioned this themselves so it’s highly unlikely to ever be implemented. Record and report toxic players.

  • Stop using open crew...

Yes, the answer to OP is to remove a feature from the game for them. I don't believe that is the answer.

Maybe more in the line of "Stop using a feature that provides you a negative experience"?

OP could take part in existing discord groups and get in contact with people that they know they will get along with?

More in line would be to put responsibility on the Open Crew feature to add accountability to those who use it . The feature is not bad it is those that abuse it to ruin others gameplay are the issue and that has been a long needed to be addressed issue with it.

Removing a player using the Open Crew only serves to excuse the bad behavior exhibited by those that abuse it by simply telling others "then don't use it" solves nothing and just kicked the can (issue) down the road.

  • I would separate progress from open crew and just use open crew to eventually build up a group of people to play with that you are compatible with.

Open crew is cool when it's about random experiences and just seeing what happens but the progress part is more complicated.

Once you have a few people from open crew to sail with regularly then you won't have to take extra risks when you are trying to get something done.

It would be nice if everyone got along and played well together but that just isn't always gonna happen. You can still use open crew and meet fun people, but it just takes shifting some goals around, and bringing the expectations down during random interactions.

The option to report toxic players exists for a reason, what exactly do you propose instead?

Maybe a dropdown filter system if you had specific goals for play in mind.

The report feature would be preferable to simply not using the open crew feature out of fear of having a very negative experience.

If you have ever played it, @Sairdontis4317 is basically describing World Of Warcraft's ingame LFG/LFR/Dungeon Finder system, where you can pick and choose roles/classes, dungeon/raid, and leave additional notes (to ask for specific achievements, gear lvl, etc).

There are automatic ones, like dungeon finder, where the system automatically groups all of the people who applied for the same dungeon, as long as the criteria is met (1 tank, 1 healer, 3 dps). And there are manual ones - raid groups / hc, mythic and mythic+ dungeon groups, where you pick which players you believe fit your requirements, if they applied to your LFR/LFG (assuming you're the leader, and not searching to join one). Here you can add notes I mentioned earlier.

That's actually a really good idea, I don't see why it wouldn't work.

For people not using discord and not having friends to play with, I tend to believe they wouldn't mind having 2-3 extra steps if it's gonna pay off in the long term.

For me personally, this system in WoW was very useful when I've got no guildmates/friends online, and I still wanna do some progress (especially since you can't solo most of the dungeons/raids). Met some good folk too. Some other times I even got invited into guilds. It opens up a lot of possibilities of meeting new people.

Sure, built-in tools would be nice to postulate or recruit people with specific criteria in mind, like what kind of activities they are looking for.

My reply was more concerning the toxicity aspect via open crew; joining or be joined by random people will always be a gamble no matter where they come from, and if the gamble is ruining the experience too often for one's taste, they might want to make sure they crew up with like-minded people, and make sure to report people making these experience toxic, therefore getting actual consequences to these trolls.
I don't really see the issue about advocating against using a system that increases the chances of being exposed to random trolls if it really affects someone.
Anywho, I think the original point OP was making is that they wanted a way to kick other crewmembers and I agree with BurnBacon, it's something that could be easily exploited and make things worse. I did play WoW and I remember back in the day when people could kick party member at the end of a dungeon to invite friends to give them loot instead, and I could easily see people do it in SoT as well. Better to report and move on, and until built-in crew finders exists, third parties are there to fill the purpose.

Ah... ninja-looting... hahahah xD yea, twas some time ago

But yea, I def agree that allowing people to kick others shouldn't be in the game. So easily abusable. Better to stick with the current report system for such things.

Yes, exactly what I was suggesting. Thank you for the excellent description to better illustrate the goal filtering queuing system.

  • Reporting is already in-game though rare will always ask for video proof later so they can evaluate a punitive action.
What could be done is a block function instead of kicking someone you didn't like to play with, prevent them from joining your crew on future sessions.
That way is less likely to be abused and you're just cutting yourself out of future bad interactions.

  • @astralenigma

What could be done is a block function instead of kicking someone you didn't like to play with, prevent them from joining your crew on future sessions.

That's also an ok bonus idea, especially if someone keeps harassing you. Why not. However, there could be a small caveat to it, when it comes to Open Crew.

So you may block someone. What if the other crew members don't have the same person blocked? Does that mean that by default these same people won't be able to join you as well if all of you (including the person you blocked) end up in the same pool/queue?

You'd technically deny also potentially likeminded players from joining you. That is, ofc, only a theory, simply because I don't have actual information in front of me how server queues actually work.

It would boil down to filters/queue priorities Rare sets up, for such niche scenarios. Would they only filter out the person you blocked, and find additional bonus player in their place (if we're talking about brig or gally), or you'd be the one not getting into that pool/group?

The bigger the group, the more players to shuffle.

  • @r3vanns
The way it would work best would be a score based on how blocked you are.
The more people that blocked you the lower your priority.
Honestly, I thought this as a "after you already are sailing your ship" instead of a lobby.
As for the way it filters out if they are alone it will just not try to put them in your group if they are joining as a group then the whole group doesn't join since it's most likely his friend/s you probably don't want them either.
The issue would be more likely to be when they are trying to join a friend that is already on the ship, then the game would have to report that he can't join the session cause someone on the ship blocked him.

  • @astralenigma
So... a karma system in SoT. That'd be interesting hahah :D

Honestly, I thought this as a "after you already are sailing your ship" instead of a lobby.

    Ya, fair enough.

This also makes sense as well, agreed.

  • Send them to the brig & don't let them out. Problem solved. Eventually they'll leave

  • i imagine there is a plan in the works for toxic players it will probably come around season 20

  • Don't play in open crews, use the Discord to find people

  • @BurnBacon

    Agreed

  • @BurnBacon

Griefers keep camping those skeleton forts and stealing the rep when im barely getting by and then on top of everything after I scavenge around the islands a griefers takes my ship without me noticing killing me multiple times and then setting my boat on fire like seriously I didn't even fire a shot beforehand and I'm like two minutes into the game and already being trolled and griefed

  • Griefers keep camping those skeleton forts and stealing the rep when im barely getting by

How many Skeleton Forts are there, how many players on server. They cant camp them all.
"stealing Rep" I didnt know rep could be stolen...

I scavenge around the islands a griefers takes my ship without me noticing

    Ok...

killing me multiple times and then setting my boat on fire

    Ok...

I didn't even fire a shot beforehand and I'm like two minutes into the game and already being trolled and griefed

So..where are the trolls and Griefing here? Sounds more like pirates doing pirate things to a ship, They know nothing about, you could be a threat they are removing. :/
