DUAL Firearm FAST Swap Exploit

  • So I've noticed an increase of people rock dual fire arms and seemingly hitting with a dual shot near simo combo. ( Shotgun /Pistol, Sniper/Pistol, Shotgun/Sniper) At first I thought it was a hack, then just skill. I realized now it is an exploit. I say its an exploit because the second shot fires before the animation to swap guns completes and the aim dot stays identical and is not affected or interrupted by the swap. Whether or not this is fair or balanced is up to the devs to decide, but it is a cheesy practice I believe deserves to be exposed. On Xbox it is accomplished by equipping two firearms firing the first with RT, instantly tapping Y once to swap weapons and immediately pulling the trigger a second time. Its an effective move but cheap and exploits something in the game I do not believe was the devs intention. I've learned it now to gain an advantage but I share it with you so you maybe aware of this dastardly trick and allow the devs to solve what could be seen as an exploit.

  • I have also seen a few people using this method/exploit.
When I first encountered it, I was also very suspicious about that double shot.

This mechanic should be looked at by the devs!
At least add some time between the 1st shot and the animation to switch to the 2nd weapon.

  • I’ve used it since they nerfed the blunderbuss(flint and sniper). It takes some skill and experience to use effectively. It’s only super effective in close quarters, usually on a ship. Someone with a sword can ruin your day if you make a small mistake.

  • High risk high reward, you miss either shot and you are stuck reloading for two guns to try again, can't exactly clear 4 people quickly enough like pre-patch blunderbuss. I think it is still fair, but not necessary for the game, so long we get weapon variety that allows player to mix and match playstyles instead of trying for the same trite strategies.

Dang, you Xbox guys get an aim dot? Hmm :/

  • @admiral-rrrsole LOL

  • @ant-heuser-kush I understand that concern but I meant to empower people while the Devs decided their course

  • I would say that calling it an exploit is a bit too harsh as there is nothing that shows that this is not working as intended.

That being said it is extremely unsatisfying to be killed in such a manner as there is little you can do to defend against it. The difference between life and death for you is only in your opponent's ability to pull the attack off. If they can do it there was nothing you could do to counter it. The attack takes skill to be sure but something that leads to an unsatisfying fight should probably be looked at by the dev team.

  • You can quickdraw your firearm into aiming down sights while blocking with your cutlass simply by switching your weapon. Hit someone with a single swipe, block, swap, then fire. Their jaw will hit the floor before they do. 😈

  • @admiral-rrrsole my aim dot is a sharpie dot the size of one dead pixel on my gaming screen.

  • @strinder

But like you say if they miss one of those shots its most likely game over as they have no sword to counter with and each sword strike they take prevents them loading their firearm. It is effective but not without risk

  • I honestly think it's fair game, if they can land both shots, all good.
If they leave the pirate with some health, the table has turned because both weapons are needing a reload.
Pistol + sword is my preferred combo.
That sword lunge is Savage, in the right hands.

  • After having witnessed this practice with a blunderbuss and sniper combo, it is in fact a garbage play style similar to revive killing in other games. A no scope kill, in a game like SoT with such shooting dynamics, is trash.

You ever heard of a pirate dying from a quick shotgun blast to the legs followed by a sniper shot to the toe? I rest my case.

  • I don't see how this is really an exploit. More of a gameplay mechanic, even if an unintentional one. If you're able to carry two firearms, you should be able to fire both of them quickly. By carrying two guns, you've doubled your needed reload time and given up your melee attacks and defense.

Seems like a fairly balanced tradeoff, actually.

Yup i noticed this aswell.. First we had the Noobybuss (the oneshot close range blunderbuss) and now this. Sometimes it even goes with some sory of aimbotting or hack to shoot through something. Me and a friend once had a session were the guy who boarded us stood on the deck and killed me below deck while repairing (he fired 2 shots but with his pistol still up (didnt see a weapon switch).

At first I thought it was a hack, then just skill. I realized now it is an exploit. I say its an exploit because the second shot fires before the animation to swap guns completes and the aim dot stays identical and is not affected or interrupted by the swap.

Yup and sometimes it is so fast you dont even see the weapon swap or move they just have it in their idol animation.

I always check how to repreduce it to see how game breaking it is then i remove it its less dangerous (but still very effective) without a hack of somekind.

  • It IS an exploit.
To everyone saying it is a gameplay mechanic, that is a vague term. Especially if it's an "unintended" mechanic. Sea of Thieves combat is slow and clunky. We all know this. If you land your sword hits you are rewarded with a smoother combo, whereas your opponent's animation is cancelled and they don't get to swing.
So, why should 2 guns be able to fire back to back with no animation in between, but I can't fire my gun and swing my sword immediately afterwards with zero delay? or take a banana out and eat it with zero delay? Being able to fire twice is an anomaly that Rare needs to fix.

Also, just because it takes "skill" to use effectively, or their are drawbacks (like long reloading times) does not mean the problem can be swept under the rug.

If I tried that I'd end up with a pair of b00bies and would need to "liquid paper" it out. :/

My TV screen has a feature for this. I usually play on PC, though my monitors lack that feature.

  • I too agree this has to be tied to the animation, it's not really gamebreaking so much that it bothers me on a daily or even weeky basis but I've been on the receiving end at times and it's just fustrating to be one shotted out of nowhere with full health by someone macroing a sniper and pistol.

Having it so you can shoot starting from the point where the animation for switching stops would I guess be easy ti implement and solve this issue.

  • I'd go with the consensus here, One melee, one gun. No duel guns, this isn't a shooter.

  • I'm also concerned about this. I think what is most frustrating, at least to me, is that you don't see the animation of your opponent. It feels as if the shot came out of nowhere and took all of your health.

It's farfetched, but what if you had to reload your firearm every time you switched to it? Would that fix it?

  • Meh....

So when the game launched I would play with my 17 year old. Well we played all day on Easter...he’s 17 so He is a complete jerk and very hard to be around.

Anyway so he was using the “Dual Gun” thing. This kid would jump on a Galleon and kill everyone. I just chocked it up to him being 17 and me being...well old.

I mean....he killed EVERYONE! He would just go on ships and kill 4 other players. Send there ship crashing into an Island and come back with a Skull or chest.

My point being maybe there is something OP about the double gun?

For me...it never worked. I’m a sword guy...I tried the double gun thing and found it terrible.

I think the m**a of the story is that if your getting wrecked it’s probably cause your old and the dude wrecking you is young.

That’s not a glitch that’s just a fact of video game life!

  • I think this is still going on and seems pretty lame. Would love the devs to weigh in on this on whether this is working as intended, but since this original post is 6 months old at this point, maybe that's my answer.

  • @thejackalman Ahoy matey!

I do believe there was some confirmation that this was being looked into recently (I just for the life of me can't remember where!).
