Why will pets cost real money?

  • I feel a little cheated by Rare. When I bought the game, it was ridiculously overpriced. 70 bucks for a very empty game. They kept promising that future content would be free, and that in the long run the game would be worth your money. So okay, they release free DLC like the Cursed Sails. But now pets will cost actual money? That just sucks! I've paid 70 bucks for this game, that should be enough to include a little parrot shouldn't it?

Guess the player base is shrinking too much to keep the game free.

How is everyone else feeling about this?

  • @princes-lettuce fine I guess..
Pets will have no direct impact on gameplay will be more of a companion you can play with.
It's a way to keep support Rare's Game since every other content is/will be free ..

And they said there will be other ways to obtain Pets without spending real money, perhaps through specific events maybe..

  • You're fine to feel that way about it, but your premise is wrong/misinformed. They brought up paying for pets long before launch.
It was stated, before I ever pre-ordered the game, that they were aiming at offering pets as paid-for content, while major content would be added for free.

They also had a timeline, back then, for those pets to be coming out around 3 months after launch...
However, shortly after launch, they changed their plans to focus strictly on free content to add to the game, instead of any paid-for stuff.

I was fine with it, because they're supplying servers for the game, as well as keeping it regularly updated and fixing problems that arise... that all costs time, money, and resources. Our money for the game can only last so long, without further income.

If they do things right, it should be fine. So far, I trust them to do things right.

I am really looking forward to having a SOT store to buy content. More stuff the better!

I actually think they should put some new ships in there also! Maybe they can raise 180 million dollars like Star Citizen :) as long as you could also earn them in game.

  • They ripped everyone off by putting the game on game pass when it launched. If they take it off game pass I bet the game goes under. It’s still not worth the buying price due to the lack of content. Maybe after cursed sails but I’m not holding my breath

  • Lets put it this way... I'd rather have pets than the dark world of VBucks where you don't realise how much you have spent on cosmetics.

Pets offer a chance to give back to the games developers and support its development going forward, while at the same time it adds nothing much to your game compared to someones who doesn't have a pet, it's just a cool accessory if you want one.

  • Hopefully they'll add a ton more stuff before they consider doing 'paid' content.
Will not be right of them to start charging for items when the game is still so bare bones.

Thank you for sharing but we are talking about pets. The ‘Prophets of Gloom and Doom’ meeting is in the next room.

  • I don't mind it, and I'm actually looking forward to the pets and the store. I don't mind paying for cosmetics in games that I love to play.

To me, this is my way of supporting the Devs. They're working hard to bring us free content every six to eight weeks and need financial support to do this. I want this game to last for a long time and I know they need finances to do so.

  • @dotcomrobots
Yeah as @PersonalC0ffee said, you had to be at a certain place within a certain time period to get it. Pretty much the same as their free dlc. Dunno what it is with Rare & putting time constraints on everything.

Well in a way it actually may add a lot for me anyways to the game because I am hoping that not only by purchasing things helps keep us all afloat but it'd mean something special to me in that I'd like to be able to buy pets and gift them to people for help creating some good times spent in this game. I was already secretly planning on gifting them games but I'd much rather keep the money in this game and support this game while sharing something more with my friends. Just my thoughts but I also agree with you.

  • i have totally no problem in paying for some pets. They will not make me more deadly so the chances stay equal towards a paying and a not paying pirate ....That the original poster complains about 70 dollars for " an empty game" ,means to me, that he has not yet met people that can launch your gamefeels skyhigh so they land you right next to the Heavenly Old Man...

Rare are daredevils in my eyes ...When most games get's broken for the many because of a minority of trolls and grievers that just live to break other's game experience, they use people to shape their games....This game has little or no story ,but so many stories are told here while that is just the tip of the iceberg....Many, very many , stories stay untold or kept in the crew's minds...Some don't know or care about this and other forums.
Rare made a big sandbox game where you have all the tools to make your own game...That's sound like i'm repeating the Big Master Narrator ,Mr Chapman ,hey? But , he is right , the more i listen to him, the more i start to understand this game , the more i'm willing to contribute in other people's story...

Once again ,Rare took a big gamble in making this game , they give you so much tools , with more tools to come in the future ...The only thing you need to do to ignite this game in full splendour is your own inbringing of a little bit of imagination...A little bit or much if you have that at yer disposal but without imagination, without the will to communicate , without the will to give yourself over to this game and those who play it with the same phylosophy, well ...without imagination, you will never feel that happy rush in heart and mind, and nomatter how much pets you buy ,it won't make a difference...

In this game you need to dare to take the jump....( * yow ,Moron, you're drifting off...)

A developer that dares to take a gamble to depend their succes of their game by it's playerbase who play it , and hopefully , have a mindset to not only enjoy themselves , like most games do , but also motivates you to bring joy to yer fellow crew or " enemy" , can count on it that i will support it ....They may unleash a Zoo of 100 animals , as long as there is a wolf , a doglike animal or parrot , i will simply buy them all...

Just for the fact they had the guts to force us to use our imagination that has been fed to slumber for decades by all those games and movies that took our imagination away because everything was already beautifully orchestrated by those games or movies...
i agree ,if you start SOT without having any background knowledge about the phylosophy of the developer , you may feel you bought an empty game compared with story driven Multiplayers , but if you have the guts to take the jump and try a few crews untill you find those that lift yer experience up to Heavens , then you know that yer 70 dollars were a bargain....You will almost feel sorry for the shopkeeper because if you could feel the feels and emotions i had and still have then when you payed that "poor" shopkeeper , a tenfold of 70 dollars , then you would still feel you ripped him or her off....

Now that you mentioned it ....Yow , Rare friends....Where are those pets ? i need my Wolf next to me...! Oi, Rare??? Please ????!!!!!

They never said "everything is free" they promised all future expansion dlc type content is free.

They also stated well before launch that pets would fall under microtransaction and literally just be dinky little cosmetic pets that affect nothing, but also provide rare with that cushion to keep releasing the actual free content.

I fail to see how you feel cheated out of your $70 when Rare literally postponed the micros indefinitely because people thought there wasn't enough content to begin charging for MTX.

I feel like 3 years from now could be the first time we see pets added and people would still be like "Wow Rare you promised all free content. I spent 70 on this game and you're greedy and cheating me now"

  • Here we go again. Rare have already stated numerous times that all expansions will be free and remain FREE. They can’t work forever on the game without seeing more money come in. If they’re adding a shop to buy pets with real money, then isn’t that a fair trade off? Especially when it’ll just be a fun addition that doesn’t affect gameplay.

You didn’t sign a contract at launch that got you X amount of content for your £50. You paid for what you got. Whether or not that was overpriced, that’s on you.

As far as I’m concerned I’m more than happy to give Rare a bit of money back seeing as how much fun I’ve been having and all the major dlcs are free.

  • @princes-lettuce said in Why will pets cost real money?:

Sure, tell Rare you’d rather pay for big DLCs like cursed sails and get a parrot added for free!

  • Weren't pets suppose to come out 3 months after launch? Or was that one of their famous "miscommunications"?

  • @xwhatthechuckx Ahoy there matey!

They were planned to come out 3 months after launch, but due to feedback this was all put on the back burner until more content was released in the meantime ie Hungering Deep, Cursed Sails and Forsaken Shores.

  • I’m generally against microtransacations, but this game has given me more than i expected for my money. Most games these days would have charged 10 to 20 bucks for the hungering deep or the cursed sails, but Rare wants all players to play the same content, so no one is left behind. These updates cost a lot of money to produce and constantly balance! I will pay a few bucks for my pet monkey, because i feel like they’ve delivered. The important thing here is that you won’t feel behind, underpowered or diminished if you don’t.

  • As soon as I can buy me a parrot and a cat I'm doing it!

    That is all...

    As you were...

  • One of the cool things about SoT pets is...
Judging the way Salty (the transformed undead parrot, currently on Crescent Isle) looks, animates, and sounds... pets should be fantastically amazing.
The look and detail of that little guy goes beyond what a lot of the other animals looks like. I'm really impressed and excited for what's to come.

  • @princes-lettuce

No way I'll be buying the pets for real money, but I know they will fund a lotof FREE dlc. So it's worth it.

  • Were can you find this info your all talking about???? Im looking everywere but with No luck

  • @alzheimeers Ahoy matey!

These were two of the best articles at the time, this was all said to the press around launch.

  • One thing i would like to add is the fact that the original idea for pets was even thou they do not give any advantage to player who puchase them, but they will phyical objects that the whole crew could interact with. Pets are far more then just a cosmetic you can buy for chacter but an interacting addition for your ship and crew. So those who did not spend real money can still have the experience. of a pet just not the choice of one. So when you buy a pet it's not just for. your character but a element of the game in which you can share with everone you meet. It's a profound idea for MTX's IMO.

  • I'm super happy to pay for little extras. They aren't necessary for the game, just cosmetic bonuses etc.

Plus all expansions are totally free. They're already giving us so much.

  • Im fine paying for fun little extras that dont give an advantage in game play. Like having an innocent pet parrot just hanging out on your shoulder isnt bad. Now if it was a kamikaze parrot that flies into your opponents ship and puts holes in it, that I would be against. Im not a fan of pay to win games.

  • @musicmee Thank you Buddy!!

  • Well i think its a Good idé! They need the money to keep the game floating (as real people in the world) they need money to pay bills in the real world,

This game is there work, so If i can help them keep there work i gladly do it

    End of storie

  • @dunkachino1124 said in Why will pets cost real money?:

@combatxkitty everything in the game doesn’t give you an advantage

    Yes I know that.

  • @dunkachino1124 What? So if someone can buy a pet cat, this ruins the experience of sailing around, finding treasure, sinking ships, storming forts, and spending time with my friends? Wow! I had no idea. So tell me how that works? I want to understand.

  • @dunkachino1124 said in Why will pets cost real money?:

@ghostpaw [link text](link url)the point of the game is EARNING cosmetics not just using your moms money to buy cosmetics

Mom is much more likely to ask me for money at this point in our lives. It sounds like your reason for playing the game is to earn cosmetics, but that is not mine. My experience will not be ruined by a player showing off a pet monkey.

  • @ghostpaw dijo en Why will pets cost real money?:

My experience will not be ruined by a player showing off a pet monkey.

Unless the monkey throws at you his own p**p... XD

  • This game already costs a lot and lacks of content. As much as I like this game I have to admit it. Getting features of the game apart for it to be paid wouldn’t be fair in my opinion, the only reason for me to support this would be if they use a big part of the money to finance a good amount of new content

  • @dunkachino1124 said in Why will pets cost real money?:

@ghostpaw it is the only rewards you earn it’s not just my opinion it’s the majorities opinion

If the majority of people do not think pets should cost money then the majority will not buy them. It is a self-correcting problem. I have doubts the majority are against it. We are talking about pets, not access to a new area to sail or an exclusive ship type.
