Ways to improve Sea of Thieves (Legitimate Feedback from a crew of Athena 10 Legends)

  • So tonight my crew and I were discussing the way the game is since Forsaken shores has been released. We're all PL and Athena 10. We've all been playing since launch. Hungering deep was really fun. New content, new AI, alliances etc. Rare took feedback about the longevity of the quest and made alterations to cursed sails in regards to those concerns. All in all, My crew had a great time playing it. Cursed sails was even better. New AI threats in the skeleton ships, cursed cannon balls, new loot types. We all had fun playing that. As of late though, fewer and fewer of my friends have been playing.

This is really sad to me as I'm a hardcore sea of thieves player and I absolutley love the game. In our opinion : here are A few things that would help get a lot of players back into it and make it as fun for them as it still is for us!

    • Fix the roar so that Volcanos have at least 10 minute gaps in between eruptions.
    • Stop gunpowder keg skeletons spawning ontop of geysers that are also spawning resulting in instant death.
    • Make rowboats not be 'targeted' by volcanos so that they are actualy useful in the Devils Roar like they were meant to be. Theres a difference between challenging and frustrating, and as it is, the devils roar is pretty frustrating. Those on my friends list who are still playing are avoiding the region completley. The region itself looks beautiful. The volcanic islands are a great addition to the map, but i think it needs a bit of fine tuning.

They need to Bring in the things hardcore players have been asking for since launch!

Pets (I want a monkey 🐒), Ship Names, New Weapons, New ship customizations, More quests and things to do, dice games, fishing, More ship types like the man-o-war, more factions after you hit Pirate Legend (And more factions in general), A royal navy update with Ships that roam the seas hunting pirates, an arctic region, goonies style boobietrapped puzzle caves, different ways to personalise your ship, new enemy types like mermaids and tribes of native warriors, a tortuga style island with new and different traders, new items, new shanties to play, a Pirate Legend Hideout you can customize, the ability to physically alter your pirate, the mermaid kingdom, a potion shop above the OOS.

These are at the top of a lot of peoples lists, but theres a huge list of other things that players have been asking for since launch and all of them would make the game immensly more fun and immersing.

Still one if the best games ever released though (and my personal favorite!)

    Thoughts?

  • @captain-beattie I completely agree with your point of view and your suggestions. I just say this to take your post UP for everyone!

  • Well written,
I've had the game since its release and I play as often as I can.
    I'm almost pirate legend 47 43 42 A3
Love the game, but they are losing me.
They seem to be more focused on rushing out new content before fixing the games stability.
    #disapointed

  • @captain-beattie this OP in its entirety has been on my mind... frequently at the least.

The forsaken shores were truely spectacular, to look at.
Great to watch, which is key cause thats 80% of what happens in the region.

Skeletons (especially sKEGletons) dont seem to have much hinder compared to the player.. getting back to the ship in a no sprint, 3 leg skele scenario.. you cant get away, they keep up with you just fine.

If the volcanoes eruption and geyser frequency isnt bad enough the mechanics of mountain itslenf. goes out of its way to find you..
This is unnatural and honestly unfair.
Rowboats dont help with the devils roar... you cant leave your boat safely away.. you and up needing to bring it in anyway.

Its overall... not fun. I got my commendations and left.. I'm not going back there...

    Now. About fishing....

  • Agreed. I wrapped up the available commendations in the roar, and haven't gone back in. Its just not enjoyable to either be sitting staring at a volcano that won't stop erupting, or to be killed 2 miles out by a homing missile lava chunk. Another issue is the overlap of range the volcanoes have. You're on an island and a volcano goes off? You run away of course. But, what's this? A volcano just started erupting in the direction you're heading. You quickly turn away and a third volcano is going off that way too, and magma kills you at the helm. The best part is spawning back in with just enough time to see your boat going down. I get the Roar is supposed to be hard but games can be made fun as well as difficult. There's nothing fun about constantly running a gauntlet of what is functionally 30 skeleton-fort cannons with a ridiculously huge range and the 100% accuracy of the original skeleton cannon.

  • It Feels like my Pirate has spent his whole life on the seas Longing for a Pet Monkey to give him company, a Name on the Back of his Sloop to give him Purpose, a Royal Navy A.I. ship to battle and drop him loot, and a Sprawling Indiana Jones style Puzzle cave to explore filled with hidden traps and loot rooms...

  • @captain-beattie

    Ahoy matey!

Thanks for the feedbacks but I want to add my vision to that. I'm also Athena 10 (if it's something you want to hear for legitimise the feedback of someone) and I really love Devil's Roar.

You are saying that there's a difference between challenging and frustrating, and I agree with that. But, I disagree with Devil's Roar being frustrating and I think it's you who are making your experience frustrating.

Devil's Roar is meant to be difficult, hence the ruthless volcanoes, geysers and skellies. Devil's Roar is there to change the way you are playing compared to the regular regions. But you are saying that you are prefering to wait 6 minutes for the volcanoes to stop.

Mmh? Take a rowboat, fire yourself out of a cannon, swim over there, hijack a enemy ship to go there, make your own adventure? I don't know for you but I have a lot of fun doing that while you choose to wait safely on your ship. Of course sometimes I'm going to fly in the air by a geyser or the boiling water will kill me. But it's a game, why do you want to be so serious about it? Why do you want to make it so easy? What would be the point of having volcanoes it they never hit you? Would it be really more fun?

I think you are creating your own frustration out of it and I can understand that it's not a healthy way to have fun.

  • @skulliah understandably its doable..

It's mostly about it not being enjoyable.

Connoning over, using the rowboat (which you get targeted in anyway and if you make it to shore 9/10 times it's not there still when you need it to get back)

Using another crews vessle hiding out on the island even leaving the boat to get hammered and just out repair the damages.. Me and my crew have done these.
Its not about completability, we have the complete ability.
Its more so that the place is not an enjoyable experience for the majority.

From every1 I've spoken to on the sea... most, Not all. But most. Say it could be a little more tame. some cases in a more colorful manner

It feels 2x loot but 4x risk. It's just not worth it.

  • @skulliah Ahoy Lad!

    Thanks for the feedback!

I don't mean any disrespect to the players that aren't PLA10, their suggestions are just as legit as ours. Its just that The Hardcore SoT players Ive spoken too, my crew included, have all been asking for a lot of the same content since launch and are still yet to see any of it. Basic Suggestions like pets, more ship customisations, ship names etc. that would be a geat finishing touch to the game. A royal navy AI that hunts down ships on the open waters, the mermaid kingdom, sprawling Goonies style puzzle caves for pirate legends to explore, AI enemies OTHER than skeletons : any of these would enhance the game 10 fold for everyone.

The Roar seems to consistantly frustrate my crew, no matter the circumstance. We rowboat in to an island thats erupting to complete our quest: we get hit by a boulder and sank/killed in one hit on the way there. We swim over (which is easy enough with 5 bananas in your inventory) and within a minute you're insta-killed by a GP skelly spawning on top of a geyser, or a boulder slamming into you. This makes cargo runs insanley difficult. Multiple times ive gotten back to my rowboat to find its been destroyed by the island. Some nights are worse than others, but like @Nayfe-Pacewell mentioned : it feels like 2x the loot payout for 4x the risk.

I understand what you're saying. And we always make our own adventure around the Map, to make the repetitive missions and grinding fun and exciting. We've got a whole back-catalouge of hilarious adventures we've had on the seas that we'll never forget : but every time we sail into the roar, We go in with a positive attitude, excited to find ways to beat the region - and come out disheveled like we've just gone 10 rounds with Mike Tyson in a boxing match.

We somehow manage to get a whole cargo run in pristine condition onto a rowboat to get back to our ship : and a gunpowder skelly pops up just before we push off the shore and blows the whole lot up, or it gets hit by a boulder on the row back.

I know its meant to be hard, thats the whole point of the Roar : but at times it feels 'Unrelenting' as opposed to difficult :(

  • @captain-beattie

I'm hearing you loud and clear, mate.
I'm not A10 yet, still have one and half rep points to go... or three more life times, whichever comes first.

I've had no problem in achieving all of the commendations of previous events (when they've paid up) but this one is so frustrating.

The hardest part of Forsaken Shores is getting a crew together who are willing to put themselves through the slog.

I recorded a boring 7 minute eruption while I was on the island, I'm now thinking of calling it "the Forsaken Shores screensaver".

  • @captain-beattie I agree with all of this but the fishing...no one needs fishing

  • @schwammlgott speak for your self sir.

I for one realy want fishing. As do many others.

  • I agree as long as the asked imrovements are only cosmetics and nothing PL or Athena Rank exclusives!
This is key to SoT to keep all players equal regarding power and acces to any region!

Well, imho you played very much if you are A10. I play since Alpha and i am no PL. This highly depends on your playstyle and how often you sailed with a good crew etc.
If you "exploited" the game like only go for golden chickens, tap chests only to get quicker to your Legi and stuff like that you need not wonder. If you did so, if not, well some are also just better at combat, quicker at riddles or use this map and database from the internet and use spoilers etc. to improve their effectiveness.
If you just don't do that or sailed more often solo etc. you wont become that quick a PL.
As i agree to the additions you want to see, as they are conform with the Devs Philosophy and only about cosmetics and nothing about exclusive content or making PL's stronger i see you and also i am of course interested in new ways to experience the Sea of Thieves.
But i think this just needs more time.
Remember these Updates the last months, they were huge and the quality wasn't maybe allways ultra premium, but to be honest, they were great and admirable in quality. Not that many Studios do well about this. Rare to me is a premium developer.
But of course nobody is perfect, neither Rare is.

I imagone from the very begining a questtype that need you to collect a lot of hints that need you visit a couple of islands and gather the informations to at least get a clue where the big treasure is.
So something like a Riddle with multiple stages, but more complex maybe sending you all over the whole map to find a big treasure.

I also would like more ship cosmetics, name your ship, duels for crews, gambling for crews, even a siccors, stone, paper game would add to the game, if you need to decide who need to stay guard on the ship etc., who is the captain today or whatever.

I'm also for having Pets and fishing, if this fisching is about new food, better food etc.

About the Devils Roar i hear the complaint, but i'd like they keep it as it is. It's hard sometimes and it can be annoying, but it also can be rewarding and you allways have the choice, it's an option, no one needs to be there and do quests.
I solod there successfully, i also played with my crew there, did the commendations, even some Athena's with success.
I like it like it is and yes sometimes it is annoying and i dont want to bother about it. But another day i come back and i enjoy the challenge.

  • @skulliah I agree I love the new area and feel I have it down to a science. Getting Cargo off these islands in perfect condition on the other hand I have not mastered but still really enjoy trying. It is my favorite update to date. Really enjoy the challenge but also enjoy the comedy of the new ways to die.

I have been playing since alpha pirate legend level 6 but I never run Athenas they are to long for me most days.

  • I agree with you 100%! Problem is Rare has not been fixing anything. Now they are going to delay everything by not updating the game like they have been. I think almost everyone could live with even multiple updates weekly if they just suck it up and tweak poorly implemented gameplay, fix bugs, and deliver truly wanted content.

The Bilge Rats adventures were ok for a quick fix while they worked on solid, meaningful, lasting content. They should only be used to supplement bigger content updates. They should not expire either. I do not even count Forsaken Shores as a big update. Over 90% of its content is recolored and renamed content we have already seen.

Volcanoes, geysers, and rowboats are the only things new. Volcanoes while having a cool factor, turn the game into a boring sit, run, and wait game like @Admiral-RRRSole expressed. Visually they do not even make a good screen saver mate. A blank screen would probably be as interesting. Stop using the excuse it makes it all challenging. It is not.

They did remove the geysers over chests. Duh! Rowboats are just disappointingly too fragile. The higher rewards must not even be worth it as the Devil’s Roar has been barren for a while now. Rewards for cargo runs are definitely not worth completing them despite being a change to collecting animals.

All this content so far makes Sea of Thieves feel more like a game for my smart phone than a top notched release from a company with a past reputation like Rare. So, our next adventure is going to be a holiday for the ferryman. We get to change the color of our lanterns. Like I said this is ok, but these kind of updates should be fillers between bigger updates.

So, we should call for all this filler content to be put on hold. Since they want to wait now to do updates, we need to demand they take that time to deliver us a true major update to content, bug fixes, and gameplay tweaks.

They need to go through all the forums, especially the mega threads, to identify, prioritize, and implement true change. Show us our time and feedback actually means something other than filling up the forums. There is a lot of great feedback and ideas from players just being repeated to deaf ears.

The next update should clean up Foresaken Shores. Should fix as many outstanding bugs as possible. Should address quality of life issues. Most importantly it needs to expand what it means to be a Pirate Legend. That should be the heart of the update. They should still add a few things on the side to compliment it such as cooking and fishing. That way the still clunky menu system could hold more than cursed cannonballs.

Make the game more whole and play better. Then Rare maybe we can feel better when you decide to start selling content. Until then you will never get anymore money from many of us for anything. Stop giving us expiring content. Make it mean something to be a Pirate Legend while making Sea of Thieves a true legendary game.

  • What about Lore and less Random Voyages from the new Npc and Area Reputation ?

  • @x-crowheart-x
ut ut ut. For gawd sake man, be careful of using that word "tweak" anywhere around SoT.
That is definitely one entry that needed to be added to the Pirate Dictionary thread, posted the other week.
I know that I have over used the world on these forums but I'm trying to control myself now.

    Here's why:

    • Loot originally held the same value for every item of the same name / tier.
Rare "tweaked" it to an RNG with a parameter wider than the seven seas where the highest value of a marauder's pays more than the lower-end value of a captain's chest.
    • We could often hear other crews talking among themselves from 2 grids away.
Rare "tweaked" the chat range so that now even with the "speaking trumpet" your voice won't carry one ship length away.
    • Players complained about the blunderbuss being too over powered (a shotgun equivalent mind you).
Rare "tweaked" it to be less damaging than being slapped with a wet fish.
    • Being fired from cannons was causing audio issues.
Rare "tweaked" the cannons and somehow managed to have them fire at right angles. I've actually fired myself from my ship's cannon back onto my own ship more than once.
    • Some achievements were way beyond reality requiring 1,000 banana crates where as in six months of playing daily we had only seen 4 of them. For anyone wondering, at that rate it would take 125 years of playing SoT daily to ever see 1,000 banana crates.
Rare "tweaked" all of the achievements so the next time we gargled sea water, achievements were falling from the sky like rain.
    • People (rightfully) whined about the tedious long grind to pirate legend. But instead of using imagination to add diversity to the quests.
Rare "tweaked" the game so you could buy some of your way to that milestone then added a volcanic region where it will actually halve the remaining grind for you... or rather, for all those who arrived after you finally got there.

I'm sure that I have forgotten some more memorable "tweaks" made to this game.

To most "tweak" is like a slider adjustment or volume kn0b (dang filter) where you can make minor adjustments with accuracy and precision.
To Rare it's a "full-on or nothing" on / off heavy duty power switch as seen in Frankenstein movies.

Sorry for going off-topic. I'll try to "tweak" it next time. :o)

  • @admiral-rrrsole

LOL you are right. Pretty good memory! By tweak you and I know it means make better.

The definition I was using was to improve a mechanism or system by making fine adjustments to it. A positive adjustment, modification, alteration, change or refinement. Looks like from your list that was not the definition applied in many cases.

I guess until we find more appropriate, pirate friendly jargon without making our posts any longer, we should create a footnote thread. Seriously, you just illustrated we do have to be careful what we ask for.

  • I thought the devils roar content was pretty fun, and not at all as challenging as you make it out to be. I solo'd the Gold Hoarder commendations on a sloop, and did OOS with a friend also on a sloop. If you are on a Galleon well stocked with planks, you can sit in the middle of a volcanic eruption for its entirety and simply shrug it off... barely get any holes in the lower deck... EZ...

I don't know what all the complaining is about, it's supposed to be challenging!

I think the most challenging thing they've added so far is the cargo runs... challenging my attention span because holy kraken what a boring voyage type.

  • @captain-beattie aye I hear you matey

  • Yeah man, we all want that, but if they can't even keep their servers stable with the devil's roar i'm afraid we're screwed...
It's what im noticing, with every new piece of content they add the more unstable and unreliable the servers become.

Also, something needs to be done about the playercap on servers, finding pvp is becoming harder with every update.

Although i heard they're working on having skull forts and skeleton ships working at the same time, which is good news and a sign they're listening to us in a way.

  • It was supposed to be a land of unpredictable dangers and challenges. But I can tell you exactly when every volcano is going to erupt, when every geiser is going to blow, and where every magma rock is going to land. Where ever I (or my ship) am standing!

There's nothing unpredictable about the place. It has potential, it just needs some re-thinking.

I totaly agree with this. Its predictable. I also love the whole design and concept of the Devils Roar, but my crew and I are feeling like its 4x as difficult for the same grind with just 2x the rewards (which aside from the Gold we're racking up and my last level of Athenas : isn't really worth doing). If there was a new faction in the roar with new adventures and rewards to be earned, we'd be more inclined to spend a lot of time in the region.

I like the feedback about longer quests with multiple clues and riddles scattered over the whole map leading to one huge haul of loot. That sounds like fun!

  • I also would like more ship cosmetics, name your ship, duels for crews, gambling for crews, even a siccors, stone, paper game would add to the game, if you need to decide who need to stay guard on the ship etc., who is the captain today or whatever.

I'm also for having Pets and fishing, if this fisching is about new food, better food etc.

Its little additions like this that will make the game feel fuller and add a whole new level of fun and a feeling of personalisation to the game.

I've also said before: aside from ship names and new customisations - id like to see the ability to place in-game screenshots up around the ship in wooden picture frames that are hanging on the hull in the different decks. After all, a pirates ship is his home!

  • This is all exactly what we need.

  • @stundorn said

Sorry man, I agree with most of what you said after what I've quoted you on, but don't you think that you are sounding a little selfish?
I supported the idea of more PL content well before becoming a PL myself.

Regardless of when you get there we all need something to do there. Something other than the three faction shuffle of fetch quests that we've done a million times.

To be honest, Rare should be crucified for the little effort they put into Athena voyages.
So much for "becoming a pirate legend is only the beginning" when you have to undertake another 93 voyages / 837 quests of exactly the same mind numbing tedious game play you've done since day one.

Granted PLs should never receive any super powers but to have nothing but cosmetic separate PLs from non-PLs is downright ridiculous.
They've been making this game for over 4 years and they didn't think to add any game play beyond the first few months of playing it?
To say those PL plans were put on the back burner to add content is just a cop-out. We still have neither. Nobody asked for highchairs, nobody asked for statues but they still litter the sea as worthless reminders of what not to do.

But i think this just needs more time.

It's already been 7 months since throwing us all in the deep end.
I didn't dive into the water like an Olympic swimmer, I never use steroids, I just splashed about in the toddler pool for 4 months and suddenly I had a PL swim suit.
The inevitable can't be avoided if you are going to play this game and now more so than ever making it easier to rank up your rep, so why shouldn't we have something new to do there? Or should PL exclusive content, areas and game play only be implemented after YOU catch up to the rest of us?

  • @admiral-rrrsole Amen brother..

I totally agree.. I was also asking for more pl content before i had reached, mainly because those above me told me how empty it was.

I feel like there could have been more attentions paid to those who stayed and kept playing while
46% of players never even set sail for the first time (according to the achievement statistics)

Those of us who have shown the commitment, should be rewarded with more then becoming a pretty looking, voyage gift horse.

  • @nayfe-pacewell said in Ways to imrove Sea of Thieves (Legitimate Feedback from a crew of Athena 10 Legends):

Those of us who have shown the commitment, should be rewarded with more then becoming a pretty looking, voyage gift horse.

Agreed. Nothing that changes our balance against other players : but new types of voyages unlike the regular ones. Such as Goonies-Style underground caverns with puzzles to complete, and hidden traps behind every corner - with a huge cave jammed full of expensive loot at the end of finishing it. Like a million gold worth : and an exit attached with a 5 minute time limit to get as much loot out as your crew can run back and forth before it collapses?

    No!
    Why exclusive?
Implement new ways to play for everybody.
I give a s**t for titles and levels, because it doesnt matter.
The philosophy is horizontal progression, only cosmetics and titles.
No exclusive items, quests, regions please.
If some argue Athena Hideout and Quest is already exclusive i want to answer this.
Yes, and completely fine because the Hideout is no playable content. It's like a cosmetic for an Outpost. And the Athena Quest is just a bundle of quests.
We dont need to give PL a meaning other than we have!
We need various content yes, but not exclusive for PL only, but for everyone.
The meaning and exclusiveness of beeing PL is only cosmetics and of course they can add tons of more cosmetics to exorbitant prices to keep players interested.
Give a special hat for sailed a Million seamiles or killed 1 Million skeletons or sink 1000 player boats or sell a set of cloth each item cost 1 Million Gold.
All fine, buy it, wear it, show off you are b****s, but why do you need exclusive content others players cannot play?

  • @stundorn the new players have plenty of content. They received a big chunk of stuff over the past many months then complained. The non pl community has been heard and provided. While PLs remain in the dark.
    Non pl got their turn.
    We are calling for ours.

  • @stundorn Once you get to Pirate Legend Athena 10, you've spent hundreds, if not thousands of hours doing the same quests over and over again. Implementing new Pirate Legend quests and areas would expand the game in a way that would keep those players who have dedicated their time and effort interested and progressing through the game to new adventures. It would give non PL players something to look forward too besides clothing and ship cosmetics. I think entire regions is over the top, but as i mentioned above : legend quests into sprawling underground puzzle catacombs and caves similar to the Goonies or Indiana Jones would be good. Something different to do once you hit legend. And if you're not PL, but on a crew with a PL who drops the quest: you can go along for the ride to get gold and rep for it: same as how Athenas are available to everybody, but can only be bought and dropped by legends.

@Nayfe-Pacewell Agreed lad. Here-here. Starts a Pirate Legend Uprising lol! 😂😂

Imho they all didnt get what is the game about and now that you grinded to PL A10 you recognize what was said before very clear and often.
    Horizontal progression only about cosmetics.
Nothing gamechanging, nothing exclusive, but cosmetics and therefore the Athena are only a bundle of the same quests for everybody, but with a special reward of loot worth more than all other chests.
That's it until and it's good.
I had plenty of time, i could be PL in April or May if i wanted (no work to do, can literally play all day and night), but i didnt and i won't.
I want to enjoy the ride, to not exxagerate, i never grind, i always only play and let things happen.
I was happy this game takes this route and i say stick to it.
Tbh how fast have you burned through new content only for PL? And then continue complaining and nobody plays this content, for the biggest part it's not accessible, for the achiever no longer interesting.
No, if new content is done it has to be for everyone!
    No separation of players!
    To only do what?
    Give PL a meaning?
    No, just and completely no!
There is a meaning, special cosmetics.
I agree this could be more.
    Nothing else is needed.
You are all one eyed and blind to see the real issue here.
It's not the game, it's about your own incentives to play and to be not able to play for the matter itself.
Actually i have no aims in the game.
I wear the cloth i want to wear, nothing there of interest to me. Neither the PL nor the Athena Stuff, neither Cloth nor ship cosmetics. I dont need gold, i dont need dubloons, i have enough from all of them for maybe future cosmetics released. And if they are for PL or A? only i wont grind, i will get them when it's done. And i will be happy then i have it, but i wont be unhappy until not.

  • I adore the game. I am not a PL yet but I do agree with most points made here.
Don't rare to feel this as an attack. It is a valid criticism.
love the game but like this feedback too.

  • @captain-beattie sagte in Ways to imrove Sea of Thieves (Legitimate Feedback from a crew of Athena 10 Legends):

@stundorn Once you get to Pirate Legend Athena 10, you've spent hundreds, if not thousands of hours doing the same quests over and over again.

I just dont get why it need to be exusive.
    Too much meritocracy for me.
Give it to all and everybody is happy.

  • @stundorn Athenas quests are just a mashup of the same 3 types of voyages. This would add a new voyage type that everyone could enjoy. Just obtainable to purchase and drop down once you're a Pirate Legend like the Athenas. I'd say at this point, 99% of PL's want a new voyage type. If you don't care about becoming pirate legend or content beyond it, then whats the point of doing any voyage at all other than stacking Gold? There's only a finite amount of cosmetics to buy. It would add a new adventure that people could embark on and it would give people more reason to grind to PL.

  • @stundorn as I am not a pirate legend and have no interest in achieving it right now, this type of change would give me a reason to become a pirate legend. It is not exclusive. It is providing incentive to complete the voyages.
