RAT PETS :D

  • Dear Rare, please add rats as pets! They're the smartest little animals and I would LOVE to see some positive representation for them. :) Thank you for your time. Happy Holidays! :D

  • @sweetlollipops THIS please we need pet rats.

  • Sure! Why not? Fits better with the pirate theme than owls

  • I really dont understand why the other animals in the game are not pets, chicken and pigs already have most of their animations to become a pet.
Snakes would need more work but they can shove in the bats and seagulls easily.

  • Here's the thing - to keep up parity with the other pets, you'd need at least 2 types of rats and 5 subtypes each. Can you visualize that many kind of rats? Now, visualize said rats with collector's editions and clothes. Finally, with animations, interactions, and placement spots - it's a lot to take in.

Also, with some pirates being afraid of rats, it could be seen as a means of trolling others, and may not even be considered for pets purely on that basis alone (they can turn off the ship's rats, but not the pets of other pirates).

  • @galactic-geek - There could be a small type of rat with smooth fur, and then there could be a larger one with much more ruffled fur. That's two distinct looks that could work. Or you could just call them rodents and make rats and mice, with the rats being more like they're seen in-game on ships and mice being smaller overall and with larger ears or something. But to get them up to par with the other pet types would indeed be a lot of work, as there are MANY cosmetic options for the other pets. Personally I wouldn't worry too much about the rat phobia thing, as the only time you'd really be bothered by it is if you're on the crew of someone who has a rat, and you could then just leave if you want? I'm not an expert on fear or phobias or whatever, but I don't think it should stop the devs from implementing it if they like the idea of it.

  • Weren't they ×redacted×?

    lol

Indeed! More variety in what types of pets are available would be cool. As for the snake they could make it tangle itself around the arm of the person holding it.

    Weren't they tested with insiders?

Bait and trap question - you know Insiders can't answer that due to the NDA. Please try not to get others into trouble.

  • @galactic-geek - Good to know! It's not something you always think of. :)

  • Op could join Insiders and ask again...

  • As for rats, I imagine there would be 2 types, as was previously suggested:
    [1] Clean/Smooth/Refined
    [2] Dirty/Mangey/Feral

Those 2 would likely be subdivided into these colors:
    [1] white
    [2] black
    [3] grey
    [4] brown
    [5] white & brown

As for clothing and collectors, those shouldn't be too hard to imagine with hats, hooks, peg legs, and eyepatches.

For them to work, I also imagine that they'd have to be R.O.U.S.

3 types: skinny, medium, large rat
5 colours (subtypes): grey, black, palomino, hooded marking, white (hmmm... can't use the word for all white with pink eyes here?!)

But you can literally google "rat colours"

Also, with some pirates being afraid of rats, it could be seen as a means of trolling others, and may not even be considered for pets purely on that basis alone (they can turn off the ship's rats, but not the pets of other pirates).

This could be a very valid concern but a simple workaround would be to have that setting change how the player sees other players' pet rats - perhaps replacing them with a generic cat or dog pet instead.

They're just Nutria and the want pets

There are several different breeds of rats that could be used.

  • @galactic-geek - Sounds good to me. But what would the third type be?

Except no other pet type has different sizes among its own species - they're all relatively the same size.

    Colors are pretty straightforward.

    Trust me, I did. 😅

That kind of defeats the purpose doesn't it? I can just imagine someone saying "nice cat" as you hold out your pet rat to them... 🙄

Ooh, you're right - I forgot about the rule of 3...

    Perhaps a fur-tailed rat?

It's a solution to a problem some have. I think it's a perfectly fine workaround. The player using the setting knows that there is potential the pet they are looking at is a rat. If they wanted to know for sure, they could pick it up and check the Pirate Chat wheel.

"My pet RAT likes ye" as he hands you his pet cat. 🤣

  • @galactic-geek

I'm really just thinking of solutions to the issue. Another could be just to replace it with a featureless blob?

Or change one letter. They'd probably be just as bothered if they found out on chat wheel. But if we're speaking on phobias what about the rest of the pets?

I guarantee you that if that became a feature, it would become the most popular pet by far. After all, who wouldn't want a pet slime?

  • @galactic-geek

You're right! Forget rats, just add pet slimes instead!

  • How about the Cursed Captain becomes a pet? It'd be funny to see him out trashtalk Flameheart while fighting the burning blade.

  • WOW I wasn't expecting this post to get so much attention, thanks guys! I've got a solution for pretty much every problem here. There's many types of different types of rats, just like cats, dogs, birds etc! I've made a little list of some information here. (I also actually own 4 pet rats irl!)

    RAT BODY TYPES
    -standard
-dumbo (ears are larger, rounder and lower set on the side of the head)
-manx ( no tail or stub tail, smaller, skinnier)
-dwarf ( very little, 1/3 the size or a standard rat)

    FUR TYPES
    -standard: straight hair
    -rex: curly hair
-double rex: curly whiskers, wispy, patchy hair
    -hairless: no hair

    RAT COLORS
    -agouti
    -tan
    -cream
-blue (gray does not exist on rats, all gray on rats is considered blue!)
    -white
    -fawn
    -amber

    EYE COLORS
    -pink
    -red
    -blue
    -mink
    -pearl

    THEY COULD HAVE DIFFERENT PATTERNS
    -solid: completely solid coat
-berkshire: solid color with a colored top, white feet, white belly, white tail tip.
-blazed: blaze on face from eyes to nose.
-capped: color on head, rest of body solid (usually body is white).
-hooded: color over head, neck, shoulders and down the back with a stripe to the tail.
-irish: solid colored rat with white paws and a spot on their chest or belly.
-masked: oval or rectangle of color covering eyes, rat usually white.
-husky: born a solid color but fades over time.

Rats are extremely intelligent beings and can be taught tricks, can be litter trained, and are one of the rare types of animals that can actually LAUGH! They're also cleaner than most cats and dogs and spend a lot of their time grooming!

    OUTFITS
If they can put pegs and hats and eyepatches on birds I don't see why they couldn't put them on rats!
    -pirate hats
-banana outfits (maybe like a whole little banana costume!)
    -eye patches
    -peg legs
    -coats
    -jackets
    there's so many options!

    ANIMATIONS
    -running
    -sitting
    -sleeping
    -yawning
    -stretching
    -playing

As for places they could sit, I'd say they could go anywhere that birds/monkeys/cats can go!
Rats are little acrobats like kitties and they're also very loving like little puppies!

    FEAR OF RATS
if any pirate has a fear of rats, that's okay! I know people who are terrified of dogs, and I knew a girl who sobbed out of fear when she saw a cat!

But if their fear is more of a phobia then that's understandable, and I don't see why they can't just turn a setting on to get rid of the rats, make them invisible, or make them featureless blobs?

  • @galactic-geek check out the post I just wrote in this thread! I wrote many more ideas to share about the rat pets :)

  • @sweetlollipops Aye! I genuinely hope they add rats! Last time we had a new pet was about a year ago when they added dogs. And all the ideas are well thought out, be it rat types or ways to prevent people with phobias from having to deal with them. Cheers!

  • @sweetlollipops Y E S.

    Rats

    Rats

    We're da rats

We creep at night; we stalk da night

    We're tha rats.

  • As a real owner of Pet Rats (who chill with me while I play) I'm all for this, I'd love to have a little pet Ratto on my adventures sailing around, I would pay good money just to have one in the game, I'd go for a black/white hooded Dumbo after one of my old girls
