The Black Friday sails

  • @aglasgowthing

And I have no problem supporting that when it's done right. I already have 5 pets, about a half dozen emotes, and I got the new instrument bundle. I still have over 3K Ancient Coins too...

I think €8 for one set of simple sails is not a good deal and should not be commended as such. This is a test to see if we stand for it.

  • @surveyorpete also we don't have Halloween, no Santa Claus (Saint Nikolaus is coming on December 6th) and Christmas is about "Christkindl", means baby Jesus...nut people are like this...

  • @sshteeve said in The Black Friday sails:

This - 20 months of development post-release, for free, with 3 separate teams working on updates at a time.

    Not cheap!

Get your hands in your pockets and put up or be quiet I say!

Ah, after paying over 80 bucks for a game I then wait 20 months to get content like Tall Tales and FOG that should've been in the game SINCE DAY ONE. I feel so blessed.

not really, in the north of germany no one talks about the christkindl its the weihnachtsmann what means santa claus;)...christmas traditions are not really americanized;) holy night silent night, jingle bells christmas trees=german. all that christmas songs commin from all over europe

Exactly this, especially when they weigh up roughly to the same cost of emporium sails. The hell is the point in celebrating Black Friday if you’re not going to honour its tradition?

Whatever. The real problem for me in all of this is how fast Rare have thrown out cosmetics across ship sets, pets, and instruments, across not only the emporium but the MS Store too, SINCE the emporium was introduced, yet here we sit with heaps of unfinished sets and rarely any new sets... yonks after launch and abundant amounts of fan feedback and demand.

Now as for this “free post launch” content argument, that’s now irrelevant since the introduction of MTs if you ask me...

  • @weedstar-deluxe und ich rede ja nur vom Weihnachtsmann, nicht von Weihnachten

  • I like the sails but that better be real gold at that price.

It's shady Rare, this time of year people are hard up for cash. Buying presents for loved ones, christmas parties and the rest. Here youse are gouging us. Like, it's not going to bankrupt me, but it doesn't help and it doesn't create good sentiment towards spending money on the game.

Are things really that bad over there that you need to gouge us like this? If you guys have been tracking my purchases you'll know I have no objection to putting my hand in my pocket, so why the steep price on these sails? I'll spend more in the long run if you make me feel good about spending. If you abuse my desire to support this game by selling things at inflated prices then it won't be long before I start to associate spending money on SoT with a feeling of being ripped off.

That's not a direction you want to drive your 'spenders' towards.

Good-will is easy to lose, difficult to build and nearly impossible to replace once it has been lost.

This. I am more disappointed than anything else. For a long time we saw Rare as real community-focused company, always transparent, always respectful of their players... then the Emporium came along and now the real Rare seems to be coming out.

Less and less I feel like watching their streams or dev vids because it feels like all those smiles are just a chirade to con us all.

Maybe it's a M$ mandated thing and, if it that's the case, I am still disappointed no-one at Rare has stood up for the players and explained the value of community good will to them.

  • @surveyorpete said in The Black Friday sails:

    @schwammlgott

Is it just the sails? If it would be a whole set, I'd say maybe I'll buy...

Yes. It's for the Black Friday SALES. Sales/Sails? Geddit?

Although why the rest of the world should be adopting this uniquely American marketing ploy is beyond me. We don't have a Thanksgiving Day for such sales to follow. For Victorians, "Black Friday" refers to a particularly devastating day of bushfires that happened in 1939.

Globalized corporations (walmarts, etc..) are trying to generate the same sales hype during the holiday season everywhere. I don't think the sales are that great to be honest.

its not true dude the red dressed santa is american but not from cola company he exist since the 19th century

I feel bad for the dev team in this case, because it is most definitely not Joe Neate and crew setting these prices.

That said, I think the pricing for the emporium has been bad all along (with the exception of pets, oddly enough). All of the skins are priced way too high, but I've seen the sails out there so I guess there are some whales on the seas after all.

If I was spending my own money, I wouldn't have any of the extras.

  • @realstyli yeah it's not so much this, or other things recently that felt a bit off. They're small things individually, but they give the impression that what Rare values about this community is the contents of our wallets.

So, maybe we were naive, and this whole time we should have viewed Rare with the sort of skepticism we normally would reserve for overtly predatory corporate entities such as EA.

The thing is, EA would have killed for the sort of good-will Rare has/had from its SoT community. It saddens me to see it squandered. Mind you, there is a lot of squandering of good-will going on in the UK these days. Maybe it's a cultural thing? Could it just be that burnt bridges are the new national export?

Ah, after paying over 80 bucks for a game I then wait 20 months to get content like Tall Tales and FOG that should've been in the game SINCE DAY ONE. I feel so blessed.

You should, given that on launch you had a game that:

    • Seamlessly integrated crossplay on Xbox One and PC
    • Had dynamic weather
    • Had a server-wide physics system for each ship to be placed upon
    • Had a basic game loop that kept players active for hundreds of hours
    • Had a server-switch system to ensure that you always had other crews to face you
    • Had GLOBAL time and weather systems to ensure that the above worked smoothly
    • Had two different types of ship to allow for different play styles
    • Had the fort as a PVP draw for players and something different to do
    • Had methods of interacting with other players through the chat and through emote systems
    • Had various options for weapons and instruments
    • Has some form of end-game through the Legend system

You're clearly trolling now given that over the past 20 months we have had:

    • Hungering Deep – Meg, Stories, Tattoos, Scars, Drum, Speaking Trumpet, Flags
    • Skeleton thrones – Thrones, Doubloons, Letters of commendation, Commendations
    • Gunpowder Skeletons
    • Sunken Curse – Mermaid statues
    • Cursed Sails – Skeleton ships and fleet battles and of course, Cursed Cannonballs
    • Cursed Crews – Reaper flag
    • Forsaken Shores – A WHOLE NEW AREA with Devil’s Roar, Volcanoes, new weather effects (Ash), Rowboats, Seaposts, Cargo Runs,
    • Festival of the Damned – Flames of fate, Beacons
    • Shrouded Spoils – Fog (yeah, it’s there), New meg variants and behaviour, new Kraken behaviour, Emergent Skeleton ships, Fort changes with new forts active that hadn’t been before
    • Mercenary Voyage of Rum Runner & Reaper’s Runs– new mercenary voyage introduction
    • The Anniversary Update - The Arena GAME MODE, Tall Tales, The Hunter’s Call AND Sea Dog NEW FACTIONS, IMPROVED SHIP DAMAGE PHYSICS, Harpoon
    • Dark Relics – new voyages and dark relics
    • Smuggler’s Fortune - THE BLACK MARKET, PETS
    • Fort of the Damned - NEW FORT, plus new voyages and BANJO!
    • The Seabound Soul – New Tall Tale, Ashen Treasures and Tomes, FIRE

So yes, I can see what you’re saying, you paid 80 bucks for a pretty empty game (not really) and then look what you got over the past 20 months since release. Hardly just “Tall Tales and FOG” that no, really you didn’t need to have “SINCE DAY ONE”.

[SSHTEEVE EDIT to avoid confusion of singling out from generic statement] No-one is forcing you to buy ANYTHING in the game and you have certainly been given plenty for your original purchase price, but mark my words – game development is a business and eventually if we don’t support Rare and, by proxy Microsoft with this then you will stop getting updates.

  • Yeah, I don't know why we would complain... these look great...

  • @weedstar-deluxe just googlet it...I had something wrong in mind...but wasn't completely wrong...Santa Claus was commercialized from Coka-Cola, that's why he became so popular in the 20th century...anyway he exists much longer...about the 18th century

  • Until when are the sails for sale?

  • @ruigtand-nl
    Until the 3rd

  • It's good that Rare have an additional source of income for this game now, and players can choose whether to or not purchase items, but this is NO BLACK FRIDAY SALE! Most black Friday sales you expect at least 30-70% off the items for sale, just how much would've these sails have been if it wasn't black Friday?
Shameful cash grab of your loyal community is all this is. Disappointed! I'm more than happy to never own these if this is your business model moving forwards.

  • @realstyli

Oh i have time to gift some ill look after work

  • @sshteeve Put up or be quiet? What are you? Rare’s bailiff? People have the right to be annoyed here, just as they have the right to be pleased by the new addition.

Running around and highlighting all those free updates to this game no longer holds any weight. It hasn’t since they added MTs. I was among the first to champion Rare for post launch support, but since going MTs, they’re to be judged like any other now.

They’re making money, they need to earn it, and that includes listening to both positive AND negative feedback. So please, stop shutting people down like that. Everyone here has a voice.

Like @NeedSmokes said, there’s no deal nor discount here whatsoever - when compared to the sails in the emporium. IMO, this is a cash grab for the sake of an event. Lazy, greedy, cash grab.

  • @sshteeve This is true. I just wish they offered more. For Black Friday sails costing $8 it should be 4 sails rendered different colors. This is not a costly thing to achieve.
Also those "free" updates were paid for with the $60 purchase into a game that was basically in Beta testing and advertised to have content updates. When the game came out it was basically a $20 experience.

  • @william-flint yeah thats fair but then when you compare the content available in seas vs the likes of world of warcraft or other subscription based mmos that charge monthly there was large new content updates on a regular basis on a much larger scale to what seas offers so its a little more justified but I see your point all the same.

  • @surveyorpete said in The Black Friday sails:

Meaningful (i.e. non cosmetic) content is added to game regularly, at no cost above the original purchase price or game pass subscription fees. Far from "killing the game", these (not so) micro transactions will help to keep it alive!

Consider all that has been added to game since launch, at no extra cost to any of us:

    • Megalodons
    • Skeleton Ships
    • The Devil's Roar
    • The Arena
    • All those Tall Tales
    • Fishing and the Hunter's Call
    • Extra cosmetics, musical instruments, and tools
    • Rowboats, Harpoons, and Rowboats with Harpoons!
    • Bilge Rat Adventures (Thrones, Mermaid Statues, etc)
    • The Fort of the Damned
    • Fog

...and, probably, other stuff that I can not think of right now. (EDIT: Like Fire!!!!)

I consider the Pirate Emporium as a way for those of us with some disposable income to support Rare,

Ok now consider the awful state this game launched in with very little to no content. I get tired of hearing the garbage associated with this game.

It's ok to grief others because it's a pirate game is #1, closely followed by your statement.

Rare took $60 from everyone and delivered a lack luster boating sim. Them adding all of that "content" is either them trying to get something actually in this game before someone sued them, or things they held back on and thought they could sell back but see the latter for the reason they didn't try.

They are the ones that made this a "games as a service" game. Why is it up to us through highly over priced cosmetics to keep it going? Wasn't the $60 per player for a nothing burger of a game enough? when is enough enough?

No it's not. They already know you'll buy this garbage because the $41 boat sets are being bought.

It's pure GREED but the shills will tell you different

$20 is being extremely nice I'd say. The only difference between final beta and full release was snakes. That was it. nothing else.

There is NO WAY this game is going 10 years. the console isn't going 10 years LOL so what, we buy this game again? never.

  • It's funny how Rare is charging more for something that takes less effort to develop than something else on their own store...
Likely Pet dev pipeline: Concept art, 3d modelling, uv mapping, texturing, rigging, animation/animation set up, shader set up, gameplay set up. About £6.60 in Ancient coins.
Likely Sails pipeline: Concept art, texturing, shader set up. £6.69

  • There's some cracking responses here but I can't be bothered repeating myself or having 3 conversations at once.

Rare gave us 3 or more years of Dev time, building a game from the ground up in 2 different engines.
They then gave us lots of free content (because they could have left the game as it was at launch - FACT).
They only introduced MTX after 18 months instead of a Month post-release as planned.

People now complain about the price of things, rather than just voting with their wallets...

I just bought my Mrs a pair of straighteners for XMAS, but I didn't buy a gift set because I didn't like what they offered for £20 more...

Have a great weekend folks. I know I will!

[edit - I'm not buying them... Don't like them! ]

  • I bought that sales, I found the fact that they were a pun to be worth the 8$.

As far as the game, the base game provide hundreds of hours of entertainment. The game till present has provided thousands.

If you dont like the sails or think they weren't priced low enough, dont buy them.

  • Does anyone know if these sails glow?

  • @surveyorpete It's to clear old stock for the brand newest of models. I assume other countries have equivalents.

  • @sshteeve There’s nothing wrong with voting with wallets, but you’ve an obligation to respect the opinions that go with :) that’s all!

Not sure where you’re going with your wife’s hair straighteners...

Sure, Rare could have left the game bare at launch, but would the player base that they now rely on to make money still be here? Doubt it!

New content generates interest, which in-turn keeps fans engaged and piques the interest of new fans; essentially ensuring there’s a healthy market to target those MTs at. It’s a cycle, and now Rare are taking an income, they can no longer play the “free DLC” card.

These sails are overpriced, just my two cents. Though it would be nice to see Rare working as hard to complete sets in the core game, or make new sets, as they have to please the emporium...

  • @terron29 that's fair. I'm also old and was thinking more of Everquest and Star Wars Galaxies, which saw much less frequent content drops. And people do make a good point that Rare had out the sails in the Microsoft store where you can't spend the ancient coins you have already given them money for. That part is pretty scummy.

  • @kaloudz said

now Rare are taking an income, they can no longer play the “free DLC” card.

What? why not? every single bit of the playable additions (from new areas to sail, to new mechanics) they've put out have been free, and will continue to be so.

  • @william-flint yeah its just kinda worrying that the microsoft store thing is just the start? Thats what worries me, regardless I love seas and will play it plenty so dont pick me up wrong its just.......a shame I guess, I feel their doing a lot right but starting to do somethings wrong, plus I am becoming butthurt because the games hit reg and server lag is getting worse while they add new content instead of fixing issues so Im venting lol!!
