Additional Rigging

  • So something that has always just been sorta bugging me is the inherent lack of standing rigging.
    So I took it upon myself to draw out some rigging on the Galleon to see how it looks, also added in some head-sails (Jibs) just some aesthetic appeal to the ship.

    From a function stand point the developers could just make them self taking sails, therefore would not add anything excessive.

    Thanks!

  • IMO, it's a bit too much. From a gameplay standpoint, I wouldn't want even more blocking my view - it's bad enough already as is. Also, ropes going down the midline and attaching to the front of the bow of the ship could potentially limit movement off of the front.

    Nice edit, BTW.

  • That's a good point, could always have them on a higher stay out of the field of view as well. For just the lines though they wouldn't necessarily have to be hard points on the boat, I'm sure clipping would be excusable for such a minor situation.

    @mr-dragon-raaar
    I made this briefly before I did the Galleon.

    But I could make my own versions this evening probably with some head sails.

  • Clipping!? Noooo!!! 😱

  • @ace-117-a Yes to more rigging, no to head sails. Looks a bit too much.

  • @ace-117-a
    Spinnaker and Jib sails. forestay or headstay and Main Halyard. Hell when near dock a Rope to tie in Boat would be nice I know I sometimes do it when fishing in real life. I think grapple hook could be neat if done right.

  • So I did up the Brigantine and Sloop took the liberty of adding a gaff-rigged main too on both, more stays and standing rigging. Looks pretty legit now. No head sails just rigging but would look sweet with some headsails lol.

    Oh man!! I really liked that! hope they can make this cosmetic for all the ships! Always thought sometimes why they didn't put it

  • Dear Lord! That is a feeling of excitement I haven't felt in so long, not since I found the Pelican easter egg in Halo Reach. Won't lie, I would so want this in game. I don't care if it obscures vision in any additional way, it looks amazing!

  • Looks great and chain shot should be used against rigging so you need rope to fix it or loose control of sails.

  • Nope, still looks too "busy" IMO. To be frank, I think this is something that is simply not needed.

  • The reason they haven't added extra rigging is that it would clip through the sails every time you turned them. Even if that doesn't impact gameplay at all, it looks pretty amateur and you'd need to put in a lot of extra development time to figure out a way to make this look nice and the return on that dev time is pretty low.

  • Aesthetically pleasing in a picture, but I wouldn't want this in the game. I feel like it would make the ship look to 'busy'.

    Good work on the concepts though.

    You guys bring up some valid points, it would look busy though to be sure but that's also cause in real world application, vessels of that era need rigging going everywhere to support the massive masts, as well to control the excessive amount of sail, I didn't even add in ratlines lol, but there again its true that's possible something not needed, just added in some aesthetic appeal.

    I just noticed that the sloop in the game is actually a Cog lol.
    At a minimum for SoT I was just thinking some standing rigging here and there as it is totally absent from all ships.

    I too remember that, those where the days lol

  • @ace-117-a That last image is a ship that's much larger than the SoT sloop - just look at the relative size of people on the back compared to the size of our own pirates on the SoT sloop.

  • it’s a pity that the game is not like in the picture

  • @ace-117-a i do thing too much stuff could be a bad thing,and make it way to busy. however i do agree especially on the galleon and brig there should be climbable rigging on the side of the ship so you can get on the mast ect.

  • @KORSAIR178
    Right?
    @SimpleLyricc
    Agreed some ratlines would be a nice addition.

    @D3ADST1CK
    Another game I play sometimes is Naval Action and indeed there are clipping shrouds and sheets and all that, perhaps in this case we would just add minors additions.

  • @ruigtand-nl
    Looks like the took your idea lol

  • @ace-117-a

    Not really my idea..

    They used canon, chain, grape and fire shots or even mortar and explosive shots back then but a little different maybe

  • My only vote would be ratlines. That’s honestly the only thing I thought was missing.

    Back in the day a lego pirate ship really came together when you clipped on the plastic rat line pieces.

  • @ace-117-a It might look messy if the masts were to break. You'd have rope going all over the place ahahahah

  • Absolutely love the rigging cosmetic because to me its just natural, honestly I’ve been playing this game since it’s release and I’ve always felt there was a lot missing like forward sails and lines connecting the masts to the ship itself. I would love to see rare come up with at least some simple type of rigging hahaha for my ocd to simmer down 😂

  • @ace-117-a that looks really cool, and I agree that visually it would be fun to see. However, from a technical point of view it would be adding a ton and could potentially be a nightmare. Having to rig (3D animation rigging) the ships and creating all new animation sets for when the masts get taken down, and just animations for the sails in general would be a monumental amount of work, not to mention how they would handle all of the geo clipping. It looks really cool, but if it was constantly clipping it would take away from the design. Or even adding physics solvers to the ropes could potentially look good and be an answer to clipping issues but eat data and kill fps, especially with a server full boats now with fancy rigging. (plus that gorgeous water, that was no small feat to make that amazing and actually playable)

  • @galactic-geek But the bow and stern ones are what keep the masts from falling down...their absence breaks my nit-picky heart 😭

  • if it blocks visibility, it's a no from me. no matter how cool it looks.

  • Ahoy maties!
