Copy the game from one PC to another?

  • Hi!
    I have this problem...

My bf and I share the same internet conection, wich is VERY slow. We both want to test the game with the 14 days of free trial of xbox pass, and probably then buy 2 copies of the game.
Lets say the game is about 60gb, 2 games is 120gb, with my internet, that is 2 weeks or so just downloading the game (ergo, bye bye to the 14 days of trial)

Is there a way to download de game just once and then copy it to another pc? So at least we can play for a week or so before buying it...

I know is about a month until launch, but if there is a way to do this, I want to test it first, maybe with another game that my bf and I share in MS store, like Minecraft or something.

    Thanks guys!

  • So you can afford $120 for the same game, but can't afford faster internet? You can get pretty decent internet these days fairly cheap. Matter of fact it's probably cheaper than your over priced cell phones. If you're going to game online! Don't be cheap on internet! Pay the extra $20 a month. Pay the extra $40 a month it's barely anything in the grand scheme of things. Even the most basic internet where I live these days is outstanding compared to what it was 8 years ago.

I'm sure there is a way to easily do what you ask. I'm not an expert but a lot of gamers like to install games on an external hard drive or usb drives of some sort and use it on multiple devices. I'm sure google will give you all sorts of solutions to only have to download it once. In all circumstances google is faster then waiting for responses on a forum.

  • @all-the-rage I can afford faster internet, in fact, this slow internet cost just the same as a faster one, but I live in Uruguay, and if you live outside the capital, you can't have access to a better internet conection, so here we are, still using copper instead of optical fiber...

I will keep searching on google then. Thanks

  • Maybe consider taking your computer to an area with better internet speeds to download it. But on a side note if you can't download the game then its unlikely you will be able to play with a reasonable speed, if at all.

  • @munchy-ham Yes, that's the "plan B", but still need a way to copy the game to another PC. Luckly, this internet seems enough to play the game, my bf played the beta without issues or lag

  • @sashlyr What is your internet speed? http://www.speedtest.net/

  • @munchy-ham 2mbps u.u

Hope to get 3mbps when get moved, but yeah, very slow

  • @sashlyr I'm not sure if this is an option for you, but I use my cellular device (mobile hotspot) for an internet connection and I average about 35 mbps. That's actually higher than the '"cheapest" internet plan near me, which only gets (up to) 25 mbps and costs nearly 60 USD. My cell phone plan has unlimited data and costs only 40 USD. It was a no-brainer for me.

  • @sashlyr
i mean it works with xbox games as far as i know and with steam games, however sea of thieves will be the first game ever for me to be bought on the microsoft store. I think it can work just copy the files and see like steam games or even bnet, i mean you got nothing to loose anyways.

  • I don't know too much about current policy but I believe you could get a family plan. You need two xbox live accounts to play on two pc's. You need to set them both up to be in the same family. If you then have the master account purchase the game, both accounts can play it. No need to buy both coppies.

Wait, how that works? I'm searching about it, but the things I've found are just to apply limits and manage a child account...

If you or someone else can provide a link to see if this works i'll be very grateful, it will be great to save those $60 (but still searching about how to copy the game to another PC...)

  • Hard to say how well copying game files to another computer will work.

You'd need a way to transfer 60GB, whether through a SATA to USB or file by file on a thumbdrive. Either way, not easy, and not precise. When you install a game, registry keys are generated for that game to cooperate with the current system and its hardware/software/firmware. Copying the contents of the game folder over to another PC may work fine, but I can imagine with the Xbox overlay required, you will run into some sort of issue. Likely failure to boot the game, or a CtD constantly because a file is corrupted or was not executed properly.

If this game gave you a classic install file, you could simply just copy that over, but we're living in the age of DRM, where in order to install, you must download first each time. Steam for example does this too.

I will say that I recall my download time to be fairly quick, as I don't believe the game was more than 11-14GBs.

  • @face-0-o if you do it on steam, battle net or uplay its pretty simple. Copies the files to the PC you want via USB or sata or whatever. Next thing select the folder you copied to for installing the game and your done. I did that just yesterday, the PC will install the registry part and also missing files. You just need to make sure both PCs have a key for that game.

  • We copy our steam games all the time, yesterday we downloaded the lastest Rocket League patch in one PC, and then copy it to the other, is very easy.

But with windows store is another story u.u

I'll keep searching then. Thanks guys!

  • So far the builds for pc have been less then 15GB. I hope it isn't a 60GB game or I will be buying a hard copy. Where I live in the US we don't have access to actual high speed internet. Down the road about 2 miles they have high speed. My downloads go at about 2.5Mbs and with windows store messing up they usually take a full day to download.

Not all countries have internet like this. Some of us pay around $40 USD for just 10 MBPS Download Speed and that doesnt count the horrible 0.30 MBPS Upload Speed.

You should call them. Ask them to link the two accounts together in a family plan.

  • why buy the game twice? just use family share in windows store. all you have to do is , the account who buys the game installs on 1 pc then on other pc login to the store using the account that owns the copy and install, then log out and normal account can log back in and should be able to play. me and my friend do this and share the cost :)

    hope this helps

    I'll search.
So, both can play together at the same time with this method?

  • @sashlyr compatriota! here we have mediocre speeds with European prices... for low salaries.
Even so, what speed do you have contracted? I have the lowest of 2.5mb and I download about 1GB per hour.

Milagro encontrarse a otro uruguayo por acá! XD I've 2mbps, but I can't use it just for download, because is shared with other people. I will to move soon, so I hope to get a new connection of 2.5-3mbps just for my bf and I. Just need a way to download the game once and copy it to another pc to save some days of the free tryal of xbox game pass.

Also some people here say is posible to play on 2 pc's with just one copy, I'm looking at that too hehe

  • @sashlyr milagro es encontrarse a un uruguayo en cualquier lado xd.
Given your question, I suppose you have plans to hire Game Pass or buy the game, no? ... or are you not sure?

Yes, I'm looking to try it first and then probably buy it if I like it :)
I like what i've seen so far, but there is the free trial of the xbox game pass, so I plan to activate it at launch to test the game and be sure of buy it later

  • @sashlyr I understand, I'm sure you'll love it.
add me if you want, QuietRobot ↑

  • @sashlyr yes we do...we did this for forza horizon 3 and gears of war
