Pikaaroon Ponders: 'Less Important' Game Additions

  • Ahoy thar Fo'Rum!

Making this topic as a dumping ground for my random suggestions, game ideas and features that I think could be considered "less important" to the success of Sea of Thieves.

I'm not here to talk about the broad strokes of the game's design, but I will gladly give my tid-bits and two doubloons.

Disclaimer: Remember, although I am a Deckhand (Community Moderator) my ideas and suggestions do in no way reflect that of Rare Ltd.

    Ideas -

    1) Captains Log - Physical in-game item

    2) Cheers! Raise Your Tankard

    3) Small Amounts of Gold in Barrels

  • Idea No. 1 - Captains Log (Physical Book/Item)

    Super Crude Photoshops INCOMING!

I'm hopeful that the full version of Sea of Thieves will sport personal 'Pirate Progression' statistics and numbers that show you totals of certain aspects of the game.

What better way to immortalise your adventure as a pirate than with a physical Captains Log - it's thematic, it's brilliant, it's perfect. But no really, let's think about this... the game already has the ability to read maps and show your crew, how cool would it be if we could check stats of our voyage and show off share with other pirates we meet? I can't think of any game that allows for that sort of interactivity in-game.

Ahoy mate! How many sharks have you killed? What? Me? Ummm like none.

It would be awesome if the cover of the book (or the first page, like the example above) was the players name, with selected commendation below it. Additionally it would be rad if a render of your pirate was generated in your log. (Not sure how this would work in a technical stand point, but something to consider.)

Some of the examples I've laid out above are things like Kill Counters, Treasure and Total Gold Found, Distance Sailed and Reputation Ranks.

    Example 2:

The first couple of pages could be statistics and numbers for keeping track of your progress. But then I was thinking that I would like for the log to act as it's name suggests... a log, of your adventures and voyages.

Sea of Thieves tracks aspects of your adventure and generates a "day-to-day log" of your activities. So you can look back and see a history of your adventures to jog your memory to later share your stories here on the Fo'Rum!

    Added: 21/02/18

Additionally to the Captains Log, it would be great if players could buy different looking books, with binder colour, gold trims etc. to personalise your own journal.

  • Beautiful! I don't know how difficult could be adding a "diary" like in your 2nd example, but the 1st one about statistics would be great ;)

  • Really dig this idea. Could be a great way to track progression and reputation with the Trading Companies as well, or how much of the world you have explored.

  • Idea No. 2 - "Cheers" with the Tankard.

During the Scale Test I was playing alongside some friends of mine.

We decided to drink some grog to kick off our upcoming voyages, it's here, as I was about to make a speech... where I saw something missing from the game...

The ability to Raise Your Tankard!

Using the Xbox One controller as an example here as I don't know the PC Controls very well, but for almost every item in the game currently there is a Left AND Right trigger input.

For example, reading a map LT shows your crew and RT raises it to your face.

But when holding the Tankard, you can only press RT to drink...

So I'm suggesting that LT be assigned to raising your tankard in the air.
Allowing me the in-game power to tell my crew to "raise their grog" *to our fallen pirate, to make a speech, to cheers to a new friendship made.

WHAT WOULD BE EVEN COOLER is if two pirates both raise their grog and "clang" their tankards together it sends a friend invite just like the "Make Friends" emote does.

  • Ship/pirate BOUNTIES would be ace...... excluding chocolate bars.

Ooooo I didn't think about world explored, good idea! Have the islands show up on your own personal map to see which ones you have explored or not.

  • @pikaaroon That is a beautiful thing, even if it were only static from the bookshelf rather than part of your inventory. Also you could keep track of in game points of interest discovered, kraken battles, skeleton Captains, easter eggs, tribal... altars found or somesuch.

  • @pikaaroon Awesome Idea and I would love to see this added into the game!

  • presses LT to Raise Tankard Also, cross-linked your thread in mine.

  • The log book is a great idea. Especially if it keeps track of how many chests were from completed voyages/messages in bottles and how many were... um.. found, yes... Found ;)

  • @pikaaroon how about the inverse being able to slap crew members with a banana peel? No damage of course.

  • @pikaaroon I.AM.STOKED. I want this so bad :0.

    Nice editing btw ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

  • The Log would actually work well with something I thought would be useful. They said that the Merchants would want specific animals that would be on certain islands.

I thought it'd be useful to be able to make notes on the ship map about where you'd found stuff like animals or just cool or interesting vistas.

The only thing I couldn't figure out would be how it'd work with new/shared ships. But having it in the Captain's Log would work real well.

And tankard raising is an absolute must.

  • Oh my god I absolutely LOVE these ideas. Most of all the tankard raising! Besides that the statistics log could be very extensive if Rare take it up. - just think about how much stuff is in logs in other games - take Fable for example... Loads of useless stuff in there (like how far you've kicked a chicken) but it's fun to know :)

  • I love it when your game stats are presented IN the world. Adds to immersion. Take my upvote.

  • @pikaaroon
Maybe not only a captains log but also a ship log, a second book from your shelf that details ship statistics, average distance between anchors, shots fired, hits taken, how many generations (how many times you sank it) - maybe something for when ship ownership comes into it a bit later.

  • I was actually kind of surprised that raising your mug was not already a thing.

I remember the first time I was able to sync up with a friend. We loaded into the tavern, I pulled out my tankard and started smashing right mouse. And, sadly, nothing happened.

Im also sad that I can’t look down and see my feet, but that’s a thread of a different color.

  • Thanks everyone for your support to these couple of ideas. Obviously these ideas may not be new or game changing and others may have already talked about it elsewhere.

But I feel like I need to voice my ideas as they flood into the ol' noggin.

Additionally to the Captains Log, it would be great if players could buy different looking books, with binder colour, gold trims etc to personalise your own journal.

    Man, that would be sweet.
Going to add that to the OP.

  • @Pikaaroon Great ideas! Love them. Could be an easy sell to RARE, especially if you could buy an actual print and bound copy from the store of your own Captain's Log. I'm sure quite a few folks would snap that up!
With the rumored ability to take in game screen shots for portraits in your ships cabin. I feel your Log idea wouldn't be too far off from that or a system akin to it could be added to your Log idea. Imagine taking a screen of your pirate bucko's for your Log and being able to enter info about them yourself. Or snapshots of POI's, Or screens of events that took place with your idea of the daily log entries.
Might be a bit of a pain for us XB users to enter in all that text, but with an awesome in-game item and look, I'd be down to wear down some digits.

  • @Pikaaroon These are some really original and awesome ideas. +1 to the log/diary. +1 to the cheers (I've heard this one from a lot of people!) I'd also love for them to implement a system of signals/sails to indicate your intentions (could be used to deceive people as well). This forum needs more posts like yours. Ideas like this have been getting lost/flooded out by people trying to change the inherent nature of this game.

  • @pikaaroon These are both great ideas! I like the log book because I can track my stats and not be on some public leaderboard (once that crud starts...) Cheers is a definite need. If I may add something... All I want, is one new emote, to allow my pirate to "moon" other ships as we sail by. Not asking for much!

  • @Pikaaroon I want the Bilge Rat's captain log. I can imagine it already.

  • @pikaaroon what about fist fights? And once you get hit a couple of times, you (if it's possible to add) fall down with some rag doll physics. Or if that's to hard, just have the same effect as when your drunk (stumbling, uncontrollable) but without the blurry, derpy effect.

  • Hey @pikaaroon, couple of good ideas there.

    Log Book

    I love this idea and would like some useful stats too, letting you know what islands you've found most plentiful. For example;
    Snakes: Snake Island
    Chickens: Plunder Valley
    Gunpowder Barrels: Discovery Ridge

    Other suggestions:
    Tankards of grog drunk
Longest distance travelled through the air
Total distance travelled through the air
Favourite island (one you've spent the most time on)
Longest time you've kept an animal aboard your ship

I don't mind having how many pirates you've killed but I don't want to see, or have in game for that matter, is a kill death ratio. It adds a negative competitiveness to games that SoT doesn't need.

    Cheers

I'd be surprised if this doesn't become a thing. It's been mentioned a lot a fits with the social aspect of the game.

Thankfully, Craig said he specifically didn't want either of these for this very reason.

    Cheers

I have trouble fathoming that this is still not a thing!

  • I don't remember who's idea it was, but one minor idea I liked was having a parrot for every ship to act as a sort of car alarm in case you're debarked at an island and your ship gets attacked.
One thing I'd like is the ability to unlock more songs for your concertina and hurdy gurdy. As I play solo sloop, there are times when I like to play a tune to amuse myself, and the 3 existing ones get a little repetitive.
Not sure if this will be part of release customization, but it would be nice to be able to name your ship, and have it prominently displayed, so people can get the number of the bus that hit them.
Same theme: I really badly want to change out that flag that flies over the crow's nest. Wouldn't mind having my XBL icon on it.
    Hats with large, colorful plummage.
    More ruffles
    Doff cap emote
something that makes your avatar say "Arrrr"
some sort of rope swinging mechanic for boarding, descending from the crows nest and just generally messing around.
a somersault. see rope mechanic, and also for general use during boarding, jumping, and while flying after being shot out of a cannon.
grappling hook. see rope mechanic and somersault

  • Idea 3: Small Amount of Gold in Barrels

This less important addition was something I've mentioned before but figured I would add it to my growing list of ideas...

Something I believe would encourage a little bit more of exploration on islands is the hiding of small amounts of gold coins in Barrels.

2 gold here and 6 gold there.
Scattered throughout the world, not too frequent though so it doesn't devalue the Castaway chests altogether.
Gives the player a small and slow income during their voyages alongside the big payouts from chests.

  • I have seen several Log book posts but this one is by far the most worked out.

    • As far as the actual log stories being generated by game software Id be okay with that as long as we had the option to edit or add specifics to the story. Your example#2 fits to what I believe a program would be able to accomplish as far as it telling the story of your voyage, but being able to truly write out our adventure and actually tell our tales would be exciting.
    • Whether or not a player gets to carry the log around with there person; Every crew members log should be accessible from the captain room so that your crew mates or even a stowaway could read your logs. People who read your logs will remember your personalized stories as mentioned in the previous bullet allowing players to truly become legendary.
    • If a ship is sunk the player logs should float up like loot to be picked up and stored on the ship or possibly instead of ship sunk it could be on player death they drop their own book. Your log can then be read by the enemy crew until they leave the server.
