[Old alpha/beta topic, please close] Please add Xbox One Text Chat Support (via Chat Pad and USB Keyboard)

    First, I love the text chat by pressing the "T" key on the keyboard of the PC version to type in any text to chat. It allows people to actually communicate and roleplay with other pirates if you or they don't have a microphone or can't have sound enabled at various times (and let's face it, the Pirate chat wheel is way too limited - there isn't even a chat shortcut for asking people to use every ship station, telling people to vote for the voyage, maneuver, required action, explaining how things work to your random crew member, etc. which would all be essential as well). It's a wodnerful feature, well done, Rare!

    On my Xbox One X, however, I have tried using my Xbox One Chat Pad to use text chat, to no avail, as it doesn't appear to be supported. It would be great if either the left or right D-Pad (it would also be nice to add this functionality for the controller on the PC, by the way) would activate the Text Chat and those with the Xbox One Chat Pad or a USB keyboard (on a side note, it would be nice to have full optional USB keyboard and mouse support on Xbox One as well!) connected to the Xbox One could use text chat just like PC players can. The implementation shouldn't be a problem, since the functionality is already there for the PC version and since it's UWP it should be easily portable.

    On a side note, it would be nice if we could get a keybind/controller bind to display/scroll through the chat log as well in case you missed a line.

    Rare, please add support for it for the release version. It would improve the quality of life on the Xbox One immensely! Thank you very much!

    PS.: It would also be nice if you could add a communication Tutorial every player has to go through so they can learn about the communication methods in this game. Many players have no idea that there is a pirate wheel or how it works (with situations and items in hand modifying the options, etc.), that there is Text Chat or voice chat and how to use it/set it up, etc..

    @cave-waverider This really should be added especially with the emphasis on cross-play this game has. I have and intend to play alot with my PC friends with me playing on xbox.

    We use discord to chat as that's what their used to using when gaming like most pc players and that makes it difficult for me to communicate with other players in game as i'm not in that voice channel and have no console chat like PC players do

    This would be great. Like you said people sometimes must be soundless. In my case, i have my baby daughter and sometimes i cant speek. Today i went on a batlle against two other guys becouse no comunication, in that case, non of us wanted to fight. But acidentaly one of them shot, i thought that were for me and the war began! We used features like dancing and claping before the gunfire, but after that, comunication was missed.
    Turned out to come great pirate situation, they sunk my boat, i stole their boat and a stuff to stuck a chicken but in the end we could hang out friendly but did not hapen couse i was soundless.

    @kim-rod1984 Yup same thing happened to me last night too. I encountered a solo PC player well on an island away from my crew and he sent a message asking for peace. I had no way to respond as I was on using discord with my PC friends so the random guy shot me cause I couldn't answer back

    I don't know if it's true, but some people have said there will be full text chat support on Xbox One at launch. I know I really need this because I really dislike using a mic and it's always uncomfortable for me for whatever reason. I'd just prefer to use my chat pad to communicate.

    Indeed. In situations like this, text chat is invaluable.

    @icStatic @khaleesibot and other @Rare-Employees: Since I don't think you've read the original post that I posted during beta (you didn't reply, at least), will you guys please be so kind and implement Text Chat on the Xbox One with Xbox One Chat Pad and USB keyboard support? It would improve communication for Xbox One players immensely. It's one of the most useful features of the PC version and shouldn't be hard to port to the Xbox One (maybe you could press the left or right D-Pad to open text chat on the controller (also on the PC) since those are unassigned). Thanks!

    Is unbelievable that this feature isn't available already.
    Lack of communication results on awfull situations on the game (throws in the brig, unnecesary fighting, inneficient team working...)

    Those bad situations could be resolve adding text chat support on xbox, please, do it.

    @reki007 I agree. The fact that it's enabled on PC, but not Xbox, when they are both cross-play and Microsoft has a text chat pad you can buy, it's quite concerning because there are issues that can come as a result when you can't communicate intent, and I personally would prefer text chat over the pirate wheel because 1. I can communicate more quickly, and 2. I will never mess up with a command (like saying "Eat Lead" when I mean to say "Ahoy!" - this happens a lot to me...). Really, really hope they add full text chat support because it would make the game so much more enjoyable, especially when playing with a full crew of players and you just don't feel like talking, or you wanna make it clear to other players that you are friendly.

    Please add text chat and mouse & keyboard support to Xbox.
    Since this is crossplay with PC there is no reason to remove it.

    At the very least give me a emote that says I am peaceful and I have nothing onboard.

    This should have been a day 1 feature. Any game that cross-plays with PC should have text chat support and keyboard and mouse support. Why limit the console players to controller and in game chat commands when PC players automatically have it because of the system they choose to play on.

    Left and right on the dpad do nothing, at least let us assign it to a text box if we choose

    Yes we need this on xbox, when your all standing around waiting for someone to vote on a quest because you can't tell them. Also would be nice to be able to see who is talking when in game chat, is it my crew mates or close by enemy pirates? Private chat pop's up on screen, can this be added to game chat?

    For that specific situation you can use “Time to pick a new voyage!” Or something along those lines using the stopwatch.

    @cave-waverider I can understand the need for this for people that might have a disability that prevents them from using a microphone however If you are able to use a microphone you should... we had 1 person in a our group yesterday who was using text chat and the rest of us voice and we was having a blast chatting away and while do that you really do not notice the text chat at all... so that guy was saying stuff and jumping around and we kept leaving him behind on islands or he would warn us about something and we would miss it....

    @rosinok Hi you can get discord on iOS and android so you can use your phone to join the channel with PC players its a pain in the a*s having to have another device to do this but hey Nintendo switch users seem to think its ok lol
