Sea of Thieves is already a very fun multiplayer experience all about creating your own creative fun moments, adventures, and uncovering mysteries of a shared pirate world! But we still know that the game is quite light on content. What do you think should be added to the game that will make Sea of Thieves an even deeper and more exciting pirate experience?
Mechanics, Features, and Things that Rare should add to Sea of Thieves
- Fishing
- Table games where you play aginst NPC’s and get a small amount of gold if you win
- More factions (kraken slayers, fishers, etc.)
- More underwater content/treasure, so u can add divers to #3
- More weapons
- More cosmetic sets: I’m hoping for 10 (some could be goofy or amazing looking)
- More ship customization such as map table, etc.
Thank u for making a post so I would write this😀👍
A Craft system !

Craft it's life !
@jchansell I personally think that Rare should add:
1: A Bounty System
I think that there should be a system in which, if a pirate sinks a few to many player ships, or earns the reputation of being a threat on the sea, they should have a bounty placed on their head. Maybe there could be a new building at outposts that displays a few wanted posters for the wanted players in the server. Players would then be able to take a wanted poster and try and find these wanted players, to kill them, and to be rewarded. Maybe the wanted poster could be similar to the Order of Soul contract lists, in the fact that it displays which island these wanted players were last seen. If the wanted players are sailing or moving around a lot, the wanted poster could have the island on the poster change to the island they are currently at, or are nearby (This would not be unusual considering the whispy flow of the map table, or the seemingly floating bits and remnants of paper binded to the Order of Souls contracts. Not to mention, the LITERAL magic and souls of the Sea of Thieves, is also an explaination. This changing of the location could look like a slow, magic, whispy fading of the words, and a new island name fading in, based on the location of the wanted players souls and where they were last spotted). This feature would make it so that you do not know the exact location of the wanted players, so that they have a chance to hide, or stay out of sight of other players, and plan their moves. This would also allow more of an actual hunt for the people chasing this bounty. This whole feature could open up a new challenge for both the hunting players and the hunted players, and this may also solve the problem of too many agressive players in the game, due to players not wanting to be on the wanted list. Another thing that this feature could provide is a new trading company, set on watching out for and hiring pirates to take down great threats on the sea.2: Cave Paintings and Symbols can have more of a Meaning
Sea of Thieves is a world in which each island and area is handcrafted and made with a purpose and backstory, making you think and wonder what story or secrets does that skeleton laying next to a rock shaped like a giant bird, hold? Sure, this game has it's fair share of secret tombs, chasms, campgrounds, and underwater caves, that make you wonder and realize that there is more to this world, but I do not believe that they do this enough. I think that Rare should add a benefit and real meaning to uncovering these secrets. Have you ever seen those paintings of the Kraken on rocks or in caves in the game? Or maybe you found a shrine, with a painting of a bird or mermaid on it? What if Rare added a mechanic where these acually came into play in the way that you experience and play the game? Maybe some of these cave paintings scattered around the sea, actually form a map or legend, together, to a secret tomb hiding piles of treasure. Or maybe paintings and rocks shaped as a fabled monsters or creatures can be interacted with using instruments, lanterns, or other items, sort of like how they are able to be interacted with in riddle voyages from the Gold Hoarders to reveal the next clue to the chest. If your riddle map tells you to shine a lantern on a shrine or painting, the latern, and painting will glow green, music will kick up, and a force will blow against trees, and plants around you, suggesting some magic is in play. This could be used in this feature to summon these beasts in the paintings or statues in order to battle them for reputation, legend, and great riches!@knobiealix That is actaully a great idea! Especially for a game all about pirating and scavenging for materials!
@aloneemperor960 No problem! Also, you're in luck about the fishing idea! I have seen a lot of other people reaching out to Rare and asking for this feature to be in the game, and I heard somewhere that they are planning on adding it a some point! I really liked you suggestion of the table game idea, and the idea of more factions/ trading companies. I think that the table game idea can help you earn that extra little bit of cash needed to buy something, and give you a better understanding of the charcters in the Sea of Thieves! It would also be a fun little "minigame" to do at an outpost with your friends! About your faction idea, I love the idea of a Kraken slayer company! Maybe the company could be like a monster hunting company if/when they add more creatures and monsters to the game! Thanks for the idea suggestion!
@oathkeeper42o I never actually played Borderlands, (I know, it's a great game and I should probably get it) but this actually sounds very fun! I'll have to look into this system!
@oathkeeper42o said in Mechanics, Features, and Things that Rare should add to Sea of Thieves:
Friendly combat system, just like in borderlands, one player engages, the other one accepts and the crew mates fight, loser goes to the ferry winner stays onboard.
For the friendly fight idea, I think it'd be better if the loser just falls and "passes out" for a few seconds, and the winner gets a chance to lord over the loser.
Im sure Ill be restating a few ideas, but also nice to repost for fresh eyes!
1.Yes, Definitely fishing, as a faction or for personal use, bananas being the only health option is a little funky. Fiction as a faction would look great if it included a rating systems like the chests have, more gold for bigger or more fish. Also within the fishing faction, harpooning, maybe as a legendary addition?; both sharks and whales?
2.Crafting for sure! I red the forum that was pasted above, maybe a little less in depth? I mean we will always want more, but I kind of enjoy having to find my baskets to catch chickens.
3. And this will probably come in the form of an "event" but having sea monster boss battles would be cool addition, but having a megaladon sneak up on you every 30 minutes would get pretty annoying. Although, I do have a pirate crew member who wants nothing more than to hunt down the Kraken, which we have yet to accomplish.
4. I saw recently on a forum that adding a bounty aspect would be cool and I agree. We got attacked by the same sloop, about 5 hours ago, 100 times and we kept sinking him and he kept coming back. Absolutely no gain for either crew, just annoying. A big red x on this player would have put an end to that that very quickly. The more ships you attack/sink the higher the bounty. No gain or lose to the wanted other then being targeted. ( Maybe it would cost a bit of gold to label somebody wanted? )
5. I love the idea of the minigame style games previously stated. This would be a good way to pass the time while waiting on crew members to load in, maybe? Also, just a good grinding tool to gain that extra coin, as stated above.
6. I think the player customization is somewhat lacking. I understand not letting players design the physical attributes from the beginning, since there are so many variations, but being able to choose tattoos, scars, and having more hair options would be nice.
7. The biggest debate I see is whether or not upgrading items should give players an edge. I feel as if it would be nice to see a little improvement to our player, if only slight. Maybe not combat wise, but a gold shovel should dig a hole a little faster then one with cracks in it. I do not think ships should necessarily go faster then other ships, but maybe they should be just a tad bit more adequate, maybe it takes one more cannon ball to sink or something ( just rambling off an idea). I do however think, if a player were to get to legendary, which should be a little more difficult than it currently is, there could be a "Legendary Server" for battles and such?Any thoughts?
So recently i was thinking about ways to stop the sane players from dying and immediately comming back with fresh stocks of supplies and nothing to loose. Affter talking for a while I came up with the idea that maybe newly spawned ships should spawn in eithout any cannonballs, bananas, or planks. Furthermore, i think that any supplies on the ship should float to the surface in barrels like thier loot. The extra time spent foraging would decrease the time between attacks, and dropping barrels from sunken ships would grant a reward to the winning party other than treasure. This would discourage people from multiple attacks and further reduce the benefit from raiding a freshly spwaned ship.
@rogueal69 with regards to number 7, I would love to see small, balanced, differences between the different weapons and item skins. But more than that I would like to see different ship configurations. Like maybe taking all of the cannons off of a sloop but it goes faster, or a sloop with one cannon offset but to the front, or even a "trade" galleon with cannons on one side but a faster turning speed
@rattlyfob I hadn't considered that form of customization for ships, but I agree. There are crews that like to battle and are always ready, and there are those that actually turn their lamps off at nights, and would like to exchange firepower for speed. There are so many aspects of the game that are surprisingly realistic, it would be nice to say them going in the same direction.
@rogueal69 sorry,
With number 6 I think itd be cool if you started with no scars but every time you died there was a chance to get a scar. So like if you get shot from behind you get a bullet hole in your back.
I think it would add depth to the game without being too annoying as most skin on the players is covered by the clothes.@rogueal69 I agree with you all the way! I especially agree with you at #4! Me and my 3 other crewmates were in a skeleton raid, and this sloop kept attacking us. We sinked it easily, but it kept on coming back to the island after every respawn. We eventually ran out of materials to fight it off, and our ship actually sank. We managed to sail the ship back to the fortress, but it was highly annoying and unfair. A bounty system would be great for solving that sort of problem, and maybe the ships should spawn farther away from the death location. I mean, even the fact that after we sank, and were able to sail back to the island in not a long time at all is pretty unfair. I think if they added a bounty feature, and ships spawned much further away, this would allow for fair battles, and would add a greater sense of risk. On the topic of #2 I also agree! What @KnobieAlix said was a great idea, but I'm not so sure on the depth of the idea. Believe me, I am very much hoping that this comes to the game (Keep that in mind @KnobieAlix, I agree with you idea!) , but just as you stated it, maybe not in depth so much? I am not sure about the idea of crafting clothes especially, wouldn't that take away the idea of buying clothes? Maybe @KnobieAlix found an answer to it, but I'm not to keen on the idea. Also, the basket thing that you said, I also agree with, but in a bit of a different way. If you could just craft the baskets, why would you even need to buy voyages? You could could just craft the cages, catch animals, and bring the items to the merchent with not deadline. Anyways, I really liked your response and thanks for the ideas!
Things I would like to see:
- Races
- Sail damage (with cloth resources to repair)
- Duels
- Different sniper crosshairs
- An arena
- Player bounties
- Boarding ropes
- War games (ship vs ship combat(possibly with objectives))
- A parachute
- Jumping should interrupt reloading
- Fire Hazard
- A Diving Bell
- Spells (purchase-able single use scrolls of which you could
carry 3 designed for ship combat(things like conjure fog, conjure wind, frost bomb and fireball come to mind))
there is a post to vote for what you want in the post launch content
@rogueal69 yeah, emphasis on the chance part of it.
But it'd be cool if like you were killed by a shark and then found out you had a huge vite mark scar on your side.
Or you get killed by a player and get a scar across your eye.Maybe even limit the scars to like 10 (arbitrary number) across the entire body
@jchansell Thanks! And the crafting of the clothes is one of the biggest thoughts that throws me a little. It seems that a lot of players are not happy about the cost of most clothing, while I agree that some are a little ridiculous, playing enough to afford a massive captains hat shows the players determination. Also, it stops 6 year olds from putting on a hat and yelling "look at me, im the captain now" which happened to me a few matches ago. haha
@rattlyfob Yes! This is exactly what I was talking about in my response to @RogueAl69 which I actually posted after this reponse, but did not know that this was already here. Rare should DEFINITELY add a system where respawned players can't just immediatly come back and attack you again, spawning close by and with new materials after every death. As I state in my response to @RogueAl69, a sloop kept on attacking my crew's galleon, while we were doing a skeleton raid. It was at this moment that I discovered exactly how unfair the system is. Great idea, and thanks for the suggestion!
@rattlyfob exactly, and people would know just by the scar. They may not say anything out loud, but in their heads, they'd be discussing it! haha
perfect example, we had a guy in our grew, only one with a "captain's hat" and when he grabbed the helm we didnt say anything, because it was a sign he'd been doing this a little longer.@jchansell yeah exactly. As a sandbox game with only player made stories I think going into a battle and the other guy has huge scars across his bare chest makes you think twice about engaging him again.
Edit: I already do somthing like this with my customized ship. I have noticed if i brutally sink someone while i have the alternate paint and sails they tend to stay away when they see the sails again.
@krrybarker Those are 2 super awesome things that I am now hoping will be in the game! I never thought of a whirlpool system! And Imagine how cool ghost ships would be! They would be like Skeleton Forts that move!
@jchansell if it was cheap it wouldnt mean anything. Plus the higher your rank is the faster you get gold
