After the event - Meg and random encounters in the world - suggestions and considerations....

  • Inspired by this thread -

    https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/61969/megaladon-and-sloops

Noticing that discussion is now moving towards Meg as a random encounter - it's a good opportunity to have some dialogue over how Meg might well behave in the world of Sea of Thieves once the two weeks are over.

Use the drum to calm her? Make a sacrifice? What about those poor sloops? How random? How often? Should she pursue you? Rewards, do we want to see some?

  • @katttruewalker I would definitely like to see at least some small reason to defeat her numerous times. Even a commendation linked to a title to track the number of times you've beaten her would be a good start.

  • @ant-heuser-kush said in After the event - Meg and random encounters in the world - suggestions and considerations....:

@katttruewalker Has anyone tested the drums to calm Karen the Kraken? It would be awesome if playing music calms the beast or we can give up some golden chickens as a sacrifice... as far as drops go, maybe Rare will add a new faction/trading company?

Not that I know of, but the drums at the moment are for summoning?

  • @ant-heuser-kush I'm sat here in suspense... remind me!?

  • Well i would se like a head warning of the seamonsters (kraken put ink in the water) and If ur fast u can turn away from it and avoid most of the hits,

The shark is rly cool, maybe the area its in shuld have more sharks around so u get a head up whats coming because its more deadly

But some sort of reward would be cool but only If it can store loot it kills in the world (swallo) ship loot and If u kill it u get it :)

  • There should be two ways to survive:
-Killing it. Getting some good prize.
-Human sacrifice + max speed (wind on your back). One jumps to the water in front of the meg, he is eaten by the megalodon and the meg stops some seconds. If you are navigating at full speed you will scape from its viewing radius. Otherwise it will return to you because it should be always faster than you.

It wouldn't be a problem for a single player because he can leave the rudder so that the boat moves in a straight line and, after that, jump.

  • Well it shuld not be able to attack in shallow water so a sloop culd just stear that way and eskape

  • @katttruewalker She should pursue you for a limited time, like for 5-10min, if you stop to fight her she stays around.

When she is defeated you have a limited time to reach the corpse of the big shark before she sink, you swin up close to it and collect the Eyes of the big shark (four eyes to collect), sell them to the Merchant alliance for a decent amount (Maybe 1k) and a decent amount of Rep. I meen you can talk with the Merchants about shark hunting. :)

  • I want Meg to appear in the sea infrequently, once she is there she stays and attacks mercilously, and indiscrimently. You can fight her off or retreat to land where she moves on to fight other ships.

To remove her ships must seek each other out and summon the encounter like the ancients did and defeat her once and for all. This would remove her from the seas for an extended time.

Perhaps shark numbers could build up prior to her arrival.

  • @katttruewalker I would like to see it function in a similar way to the Kraken, but maybe they could both be limited to a few squares on the map?
I.e: The Kraken stays around Krakens Fall and attacks those who come near, and the Megladon stays near devils ridge attacking all those that come close, meaning that captains will need to remember these locations and avoid them when possible.
This is inspired by my crewmate and I accidentally sailing over T-26 with a sloop full of chests, only to be spontaneously attacked by the Megladon, knocked off the ship and left in the after to watch it sink with our loot. Didn't annoy me rather than surprise me with the sudden sense of dread as it's massive head and fangs jumped out of the water without warning.

Also, I would like them to implement something like a crafting system, and big bosses, like the Meg and Kraken, would give you rare crafting materials upon completion, giving us a reason to grind these events. For cases like this however, it would be good if there was still a location and way to summon them, as waiting for one to spawn all the time could be rather boring.

  • Here is my take:

    • move the meg to a new spawn location each time he is defeated on that server
    • let Merrick on shark bait cove give you a riddle that points to this location. If the meg was just defeated you need to wait for 1 hour. But not an easy riddle where you can get the solution from reddit, the riddle should be unique and dynamic
    • you still need two crews and the drums to summon him
    • after the meg was killed let him puke out tons of castaways chests, foul skulls and tea crates, like 50.
    • and increase the shark spawn rate tenfold around the loot area

This would be interesting ... just turning the meg into another kraken is not.

  • What if there were sightings of her fin, but no attack and sometimes she'd appear and attack, might increase the anticipation and excitement a little?

  • I like that.

Maybe if we combine all the ideas here and the meg would randomly show his fin and do a single attack (or not) but he would never stay for a full fight unless you summon him at the right place, which you find out by solving Merricks riddle, with two crews and the drums, after which for ~1 hour the server is free from random meg bites.

  • @katttruewalker I really enjoyed the event but moving forward I would like to see the following:

    1. Meg being a random event affecting all types of vessel on anypart of the map.

    2. I would like to see a reward for defeating her, maybe some XP on one of the merhants of your choice, or get her to drop shark meat to sell to merchant traders, or a small amount of gold or chest to be cashed in, anything really, dont just do another Kraken type event with no reward, especially if its an xbox achievement that wont trigger!!

    3. The ability to appease her with a sacrifice, a pig specifically if you had one onboard otherwise she should continue to attack you for a period of time, or until defeated or your sunk by her, not a chicken or a snake as they could then just be carried by someone all the time as a shark deterrent, with a pig you have to keep it alive so will be harder to do.

  • @katttruewalker Here what I think :

It would be really great to keep the cooperative way to summon Megan because it's an awesome experience.

A lot of sharks going in the direction where Megan is could indicate every crew where to go (same architecture as the skull fort). There we could play the new music we earned from Merrick and we should still be at least 5 players to summon her.

We need a new faction which will increase our experience each time we kill her. No gold, no loot. Each levels could unlock some new comestics.

If she attacks us randomly, it would be awesome but no one would want to help us to kill her. And I love so much the cooperative way to do it.

  • Having Meg in the game as a random encounter sounds good, but still having to summon her with 5 players sounds like a invitation to more coop work.
If it becomes a random encounter, it would be interesting to see if you can lure it towards the Kraken. Will they fight each other or do you have to fight both? Either way this would be interesting!

  • @katttruewalker
I'd hope to see the following changes after the event is over:

    • New faction: "Terror of the Deep"

This faction will keep track of all commendations in a similar fashion as the other factions, instead of just showing them without any option to view which ones you got or are still missing. Example could be the amount of times you escaped or killed one of the sea creatures, but also special accomplishments during events or related voyages. Some could even offer titles or cosmetics. Commendations could offer the same thing as achievements do, apart from keeping track of your progress they could challenge you to try thing you wouldn't think of doing normally.

    • Changes to Megan the Megalodon

Megan will roam all the seas and will not discriminate between galleons or sloops. She will appear a lot more than Karen but in a way that you could spot her from a distance if you look around good enough. This would offer you the possibility to either avoid or engage if you keep a close eye on the horizon. Megan isn't really interested in you or your treasures, she just doesn't like to be disturbed. If a lot of cannonfire is heard from above chances are much higher of her popping up to silence them.

    Drums to prepare the sacrifice
Playing the drums would calm her down as she prepared for the festive sacrifice that will be presented to her. Given her size, the sacrifice should be at least 5 animals or half of the ships crew. Playing music without supplying the proper sacrifice will anger her and will cause her to fight you with more deadly intent. Whenever she's angry, there's no more room for reason no matter how well you play your instrument, she'll only calm down till she killed you. In her angry state she'll try even harder to sink your ship, causing her to swim faster and create more holes on each attack.

    Slightly reduced damage
The damage she does could be a bit less than she does during the event and maybe different for sloops and galleons to roughly have the same impact. Once she spotted a ship though she'll continue to give chase until either she received her sacrifice, she sinks you or if she finds a more interesting target to attack. As with the event, she'll attack everyone she sees without exception.

    • Changes to Karen the Kraken

After seeing that Megan also just attacks the smaller ships, Karen agreed that that would indeed be fun, so no more discrimination between sloops and galleons. Unlike Megan though, Karen doesn't care for music or sacrifices, she just wants to decorate the bottom of the seas with your ship and treasures.

    No more easy escape
Karen doesn't like how everyone just seems to escape so easily so she'll entangle the ship more often. Not only will this stop you in your track, it will also slam the anchor down and create holes in the hull due to the crushing weight of her tentacle. Wheneven there's more ships in the same area, they all get attacked by Karen and pulled towards eachother.

    Actually defeating her
After "defeating" all of her tentacles she is far from defeated. The waves will suddenly get a lot higher as finally shows her scary head. She'll entangle the ship one last time and drag the ship towards her open beaklike mouth. The only escape would be to attack the tentacles to get free, which would make her flee as well or to attack the head to defeat Karen and get rewarded for it. If the ship reaches her mouth however it'll be certain doom as it would immediately start sinking without a chance for repair.

    No body, no cry
I don't think that Karen really needs a body as I can see how the random tentacles would probably be quite a lot of effort to create for very little added value. Just make sure that everything is black below the water too with slightly more light towards the sky.

    • Rewards

After succesfully sacrificing to (Megan only), escaping or killing the sea creature, you'll always receive a commendation or an update to an existing one and you'll have a chance for special cosmetics that everyone that was in the fight will receive.

I just doubled checked... maybe I'm mistaken but it was something about the drums calming down the Kraken.

Oh oh I remember! He said that he was attacked by the Kraken and he managed to scare the beast away by putting up a performance. "And it wasn't because I was drunk either," he said "I wonder if it was because..." and then he left me in suspense.

  • We need some rewards from the encounter. We actually kill the hungering one rather than repelling it like the kraken.
Something to hand in at the merchant alliance would be ideal. We don’t get a special merchant chest or skull when we do a skeleton fort after all.

In regards to how the encounter works. I’d like it to be random. I’d love the hungering one to stalk us giving us the option on how to proceed. After noticing the eerie shadow of the beast below the water. Swimming by our ship and following us, we could decide to flee as fast as possible to avoid the encounter or slow down and initiate an attack.

  • @sirliborius Add, being in a storm and getting attacked by anotehr Galleon at the same time. Now that would be a challenge!

  • @sorston ... while being near an active skeleton fort.

  • I think that Meg needs to be appearing in empty sea spaces specifically to help spice things up in the more dull portions of the map. Indescriminantly attacking sloop and galleon alike and can be fended off by dumping a chicken, pig or crewmate to distract it if people want to escape.

I do also love the idea of having it still be something you can summon also. With each iteration of the map have a random square with tons of little sharks that you can see and that tells you Meg is around here somewhere, but you need those drums and 5 people.

Someone also brought up collecting the eyes as a reward for the merchant faction and I think that is a great idea. If more and more monsters do appear in future updates though, I would actually prefer having a monster hunting faction to turn in their parts to.

This way, you have a monetary reward and can continue to earn monster hunting cosmetics, scars and tattoos etc. Get a whole tribal set of gear and the like.

Or maybe you if the summoning meg square is near a certain outpost, the drunkard in the bar of said outpost can give you a clue as to its whereabouts.

Where does this annoying misconception that the Krakken only attacks when you have treasure come from?

Just from personal experience, from the four times I've encountered the kraken three times were when the ship was full of skull fort loot.

    and know think about this:

you did a raid, and had to fight 2 gallons and few sloops.. you are out of everything, and then the Meg comes.. 5men fight him for +20 min.

i don't see the bright side here...

It's not really an AI "threat" if there is no risk. Why would these creatures care about you or your loot and why would they avoid ships that are completely empty? If you happen to run into either the kraken or the meg you should have some sort of warning which might help you avoid the encounter or offered an option to escape, but once you get attacked you will definitely risk losing your ship.

The only bright side there is that you won't really die, you'll end up on the ferry and you'll be supplied with a set of dry clothes and a new ship.
