Are Athena rep time based or just random?

  • I second @PersonalC0ffee

Each level costs more to gain than the level before it. It has worked this way in 99% of games that have any sort of level system.

The number of chests needed is constant. That's been demonstrated multiple times, using consistent methods.

  • @admiral-rrrsole sagte in Are Athena rep time based or just random?:

    @Schwammlgott @Crimsonraziel @Emanuel-Wynnn @Lefaux2 @Dyanor @Reedski @PersonalC0ffee
Okay here's a pic I've put together incorporating the rep increases taken from 4 screenshots that I've personally taken of my game sessions.
I actually video record every game session and have taken these screenshots from those recordings.
    There obviously isn't any consistency.

    Athena chest
1st). less than half of a rep point
2nd). obviously more than half of a rep point
3rd). more than half of a rep point
4th). considerably less than half of a rep point. Perhaps a quarter.

96 chests might be the magical number to completing level 10 Athena but I can't see a consistent pattern when the second and third chests each paid more than either the first or fourth.
None of the replies given above point to the example shown in my rep increase screenshots.

Your "2nd chest" picture is either faked or result of some UI bug, 'cause this is the GH badge, not Athena. The green ribbons, the yellow ring and the key gave it away!

    • The first chest (according to your picture) got less than 50% to level 2.
    • Assuming the second chest gave the same amount of XP you would be short of level 2 by a few percent, just like I was back then. Your picture doesn't help us here.
    • The 3rd chest (according to your picture) brought exactly to the same point that I reached after the 4th chest.
    • The 4th (according to your picture) fits my 5th chest.

So, how I would interpret your picture? Your "2nd chest" picture covers the progress of 2 chests. Maybe you just forgot, there was one more. I don't know. But I refuse to believe that just by chance 1 chest gave you exactly the XP of 2 and of all things, that's the one you have no valid picture of.

If it's possible, please upload your recording of chest 2 somewhere, YouTube, dropbox, what ever.

There is a reliable way to do this:
We simply share our screens in this thread after turning in each chest.
I'm athena 4 right now and once I get back to my machine at home I can start.
If the screens match, it's fixed rep.
If they don't, it's variable rep.

    Then we can be sure.
    Deal?

  • @crimsonraziel I assure you the progress wasn't edited. I don't know why the second chest image was coloured differently, perhaps I took the screen too soon?
I am now currently looking for those particular videos again to prove my case.

@Lefaux2 That sounds ideal... if you mean that you have done 4 chests and not on rep level 4 .

I'm athena level 4 right now.
What I meant (and phrased poorly) was that more than 2 people (hopefully a LOT more :)) compare their progress in this thread.
I won't be playing much this week (aka not at all), so you'd have some time to catch up as well (if you're into it of course).

First let me apologize. Thanks to the design and colour of the background glow, it was an honest mistake in that it looks like a lot more progress than I first thought going by the screenshot.

So Athena chest #2 was two and one quarter.

@Lefaux2 Yeah it would only take a few people to submit their finding here for a comparison.

  • @lefaux2 That there is something wrong with Admiral RRRSole's picture needs no further proof.

What we actually need to proof that there is a fixed amount of XP per chest are screenshots or recordings of the first 2-3 levels, when the impact of any variation of XP would be the biggest and therefore most visible.

I've got a friend who's about to do his first Athena at some point this week. I think he would provide some screenshots as he climbs, but this may take a while as he likely won't be up for Athena every day.

Edit: So, there's Admiral RRRSole's recording (thx @Admiral-RRRSole). As we can see, it was just bad timing and slow UI when taking the screenshot.

Looking at the XP bar (or ring ... what ever) this should match my progress after 3 chests. I might have a screenshot of that point. I will look for it when I get home.

@Admiral-RRRSole I still think you just forgot about a chest or maybe you didn't notice that someone turned an Athena chest in in another session, because all your other steps fit mine except your 2nd chest.

Taking your picture and your recording into account, there are only 2 explanations:

    • chest 2 gave you twice the XP, but all other chest gave the same amount (maybe a bug made it count twice)
    • chest 2 actually is chest 3 and the XP are always the same (or only have minimal variability)

That is where the it stopped before fading out. However in the video I have where the second chest is cashed in, it shows the 1st rep level at 90 odd percent (or 11 o'clock) before changing to blue and showing the "2" increase.

    • Assuming the second chest gave the same amount of XP you would be short of level 2 by a few percent, just like I was back then. Your picture doesn't help us here.

Hopefully the video sheds more light on it.

I have only done 4 Athena voyages. My memory is bad but not quite that bad. lol
I can still recall each of the 3 PL names who proposed each voyage. The third PL I never met as I joined the crew after he / she left.

If it's possible, please upload your recording of chest 2 somewhere, YouTube, dropbox, what ever.

Already done. We were writing our posts at the same time. :o)

  • Here's what I meant in my previous post where it shows rep level 1 at approximately 90% or 11 o'clock.

    https://streamable.com/cgg4k

Pause right when my mate says "me".

  • @admiral-rrrsole Taking this video into account too, it further strengthens my theory.

According to your picture chest no. 1 took you just short of 50% to lvl 2 (let's say 45%). That's where i was after 1 chest too.

The second recording shows you getting from about 90% of level 2 to about 30% of lvl 3. That's where I started when I already had turned in 2 chests and where I ended up after turning in the 3rd chest.

The gap between 45% of level 2 (picture) and 90% of level 2 (startingpoint of the 2nd recording) is about the amount of XP of 1 Athena chest.

On a further note, you don't have to do the athena voyage yourself or join a crew that did one. You can steal those chests from any player and turn them in yourself. You can have picked up one anywhere. Maybe you sunk another ship or some poor crew got almondbearded after they dug it up and one crew mate of yours went lucky. Technically it's possible to reach Athena 10 with all other factions still being level 1, with 0 voyages bought or completed and being on a solo sloop 100% of the time.

  • @lefaux2 This one is me after chest number 3. (it's the only screenshot I've got)

    3rd Chest

A friend who sold 2 chests so far took a screenshot too:

    2nd Chest

  • @crimsonraziel I see. I suppose it is possible that somewhere along the line we've "found" another Athena chest or I simply joined a crew just before they handed one in without me knowing what was onboard.
Thanks, I didn't think of that and was more concerned about clearing any doubt that anyone may have had of me tampering with my screenshots.

I usually open the rep display (Tab key) at the close of a gaming session but with the second one we continued on to defeat a skull fort.
The lads I was with that night felt a little greedy. lol

So it appears to start off as approx. 45% increase per chest. If it was consistent, it would sound like an actual amount we can refer to easier than saying "look at this chart". But alas the rep increments obviously get smaller the more you do.

I don't know why they simply didn't include figures in the bottom half like in the factions (for promotions, titles, etc) but just have an Athena chest count i.e. 5 / 96 .
Just for silly ol' fools like me who have somehow lost count before 2. lol

  • @admiral-rrrsole Hahaha Well people Will remember me but i Will forget about them😂😂 and its abit True i can forget a Guy i played with one day ago so the GT is Good on me 😂😂 so Yeah between 93-96 is right, but cant remember the exact number so i made it safe by picking Numbers :P

  • @personalc0ffee TRUTH!

  • @lefaux2 My friend got his first chest. Sadly a server shut down stole the 2nd chest.

    Chest No. 1
    Chest No. 2
    Chest No. 3
    Chest No. 4
    Chest No. 5

  • @Admiral-RRRSole , @Lefaux2

Took some time but screenshots of his progress after the first 5 chests are up now

  • Quick mafs

  • @crimsonraziel Thanks. Good to know they do look the same as mine so I must have acquired one along the way without being told of it.
Joined the right crew at the right time. :o)

  • I'm having a hard time convincing my crew to not do legendaries at the moment.
Would you be ok with it if I posted my current progress (close to Athena 6) instead of waiting for you guys?

  • @lefaux2 huh?

  • I messed up.
I forgot about this thread and didn't take screenshots of my lvl4 progress.
In order to compare the progress I now have two options:
    a) I wait out until others in the thread have passed lvl5 (which p****s off my crew)
    b) I just post my progress here, even though I'm a few levels further than others

  • I have to agree with the gold = xp theory. Grinding MA to 50 I could see a considerably large amount of xp gained from an 1800g golden chicken as opposed to a 1400g golden chicken. It could also be entirely random. Also when you roll a low gold stronghold chest (like 1800g) it feels like a lot less xp gained than a 2800g chest.

I think the rep is scaled per faction so yes you will get less gold on a captain's chest as opposed to a golden chicken but the amount of rep you get is dependent on the highest to lowest roll of an item if that makes sense. So a 5kg Athena's chest may be worth more in terms of rep than a 2.5kg with the minimum limit of reaching rank 10 at 90 chests.

  • @navillicious Rare already stated that rep/xp isn't tied to the amount of gold.

And the images in this thread don't suggest it's a random amount of xp either.
