Acronym Advice - PVE

  • PVE and what is means!

There are a lot of acronyms in the world of gaming and I am going to write a few posts to help try and clear them up for you.

Topic 3 – PVE – Player vs Environment

    The world is against us!

There is often confusion over what type of game Sea of Thieves is, but this Topic is not here to discuss that. A large portion of the game is PVE, but there have been arguments over what this exactly means:

    • Player vs Everyone
    • Player vs Enemy
    • Player vs Environment

D&D are to blame – again!

Not really… this time it is online games that have come under fire here, as the term PVE developed during the early days of online MMO titles.

The idea behind the name stems from a gaming mode where the player will work with NPCs and possibly other players to work through a storyline or narrative, rather than more open objectives such as Raids or other instances.
In these modes you would attack enemy characters in order to level up, or meet objectives, which is where another popular name for this game mode was coined - Player vs Monster or PVM.

Nothing to do with other players

Whenever you are pitted against other players in a game – human’s who interact against you, we have to refer to that mode as PVP - Player vs Player. Even though this person can be construed to be your enemy, they are a human player and are recognised as such!

So there you have it, Players everywhere can battle Mobs, Monsters, Enemies or Creeps to their heart’s Content knowing that they are in a PVE game!
