Me too wanted to be there but the calendar just did not allow it.

  • @skulliah Wow, those are some super cool face paints... I hope we get to change the colours at some point - this will extend our customisation option to no end!

  • This panel was really interesting.

I'm looking forward to reading the Athena's Fortune Paperbook and discover everything that has happened before in Sea of Thieves.

And the Pirate Lord's son who will soon arrive in the game, it's awesooome!

Ahhh and can't wait for the backtories around the three factions! :D

  • After watching this video and listening to Peter Hentze voice, it makes me wonder one thing.

    Is Peter Hentze 'Captain Falcore'?

  • And man, oh man.... Those Loot & Lore sails are sweeeeet!

    Summary of main points

(Worth watching for the hilarious narration of the FS trailer with Matt Berry)

    Your hosts!

    Lore and Story

The Core vision was and is to create a Shared World Adventure Game with players creating stories together.

This will always remain at the heart of the game.

While there was some story within the game, the vast majority is contained in the materials outside the game, the book, comics, novel.

One of the elements which kept coming up in discussions around how to develop content was about building a narrative around gameplay mechanics and systems. Allowed Rare to add more lore and story into the game and really celebrate any of the content which was added.
    E.g Merrick and HD

The team were reassured that the narrative didn't change the core idea or base of what SoT was intended to be, but it did help to shape player behaviour during the campaign.

50% reduction in player v player combat etc

E.g Cursed Sails - Interested in adding narrative to characters that also existed within the world. Building the story week by week via Salty and the hints with Wanda's physical changes. Also bringing in references from characters outside the world i.e Captain Flameheart. Saw an emergence of Meg, the villain from the previous update, becoming an ally against the cursed ships.

E.g Forsaken Shores - Brought in Stitcher Jim, a character from outside the world and featured in the novel - team are trying to figure out how to implement narrative into the game so are experimenting with ways to do this.

Festival of the Damned - annual festival - Hatch on the Ferry will change and be replaced by the 'Well of Fate' with a flame which changes colour according to the way in which pirates have died. Players can use lantern to take some of that flame and use it to decorate their ship and light beacons around the world.

    Also... make-up is coming!!

    Captain Flameheart

His story has not played out yet, mentioned in Tales book, featured as figures and accessories in store.

Rare have planned out the lore and story and will drip feed it into the development of the game, more stories, more adventures, more clues, more narrative to follow.

Pirate Lord - first person to find and settle in Sea of Thieves, resident now in the Legend's Tavern.
He features very heavily in the novel and is critical to the history of the world of Sea of Thieves. A great many of the questions around the how, why and where of Sea of Thieves are answered in the novel.

Released as a steady flow of lore and information so as not to overwhelm players, but also the narrative develops as the game grows.

Novel tells the story of the first voyage to Sea of Thieves, their experiences.

15:45 into video is a reading of an extract from the novel
(I shall forever hear the Pirate Lord speaking in the wonderful voice of Peter Hentze)
Piglets, jewelled horn, snake.... Stitcher Jim...mysterious figures... and more!

This character.. de Marco, the son of the Pirate Lord will be coming to the game in a ot too distant future update, as well as Lesedi, his twin sister. -

These both play a significant role in the story and history of Sea of Thieves.

Also working on another set of comics which will give the full back story of the 3 Trading Companies.

An extract from the novel can be previewed at amazon here as well as pre-ordered from the Store here

    Joe Neate -

Talking about how the things players do become stories and part of the world which is equally important to the lore and written narrative.

Pirate Times, skull ball, Merrick's son Derrick, The Merrick Roll song etc - love to see the creativity from the community and will commemorate it in game where they can.... there are no rules, but they'll continue to add references to things which they really like and are touched by. Very much want to keep building up the lore of the world around the players as well as the written lore.
Feel very blessed to have such a positive supportive community.

For anyone who'd like to karaoke in game - at 28:45 :D

Shout out to Captain Daggers McTimbers and the make up set added to game in her honour :)

Also the group of pirates who play together and cosplayed as pirates commemorated through a painting in one of the taverns -

Keep a weather eye out on the seas for these extra special Loot n' Lore Sails!
Commemorating the fabulous work of TheFrostE and his crew with the games they've created on the Seas.

Really excited to be able to add to the game in this way and continue doing so.- Joe getting emotional here :D

    Questions

Expanding ships on server, if and when?

Not on the road map at the moment. Skeleton ships will be adding to the density and population soon. Frequency of encounters is the overriding factor and they're happy with that at the moment.

Instruments. Plans to add, expand instruments of music.

A bunch of instruments were prototyped, lots of experiments, with new inventory now have the opportunity to add more, some technical limitations still exist but the opportunity is there particularly with the banjo which already exists in the Legend's Tavern.

Will there be more Cursed Chests?

Eventually. Such a great feature and would like to expand on these, internal forum exists at Rare and suggestions feature on there, large list of possible ideas for next cursed chests. Idea is to focus for now on the parts of the game pirates engage less with to try and encourage those areas, hence cargo runs. Want to think about what will provide best experience - chest with legs very very popular idea...

With all expanded universe materials, how do you make sure lore is consistent?

Shadowy cabal of loremasters exist. Future lore, expanded universe, thoughts and ideas are discussed between Pete, Adam and Mike to make sure it all meshes together. Novel ties together lots of details and characters, author used to work at Rare. Audiobook suggestion. Very conscious of making sure everything is fitting together and works within the overarching story

Fan fiction and stories written by players, could these ever be added to the lore?

Something coming soon which might scratch this itch..... they love to read stories and creations based around existing lore or creating new threads of stories of players - community is the lifeblood of Sea of Thieves

    More enemy types?

Always looking at enemies in game and ai. There are some things being considered for future, will look and see what fits within game, always designing and thinking about ideas and the right opportunity to do so.

British Empire - will we have to worry about this or the EITC at any time?

Pirate police idea was thrown around at one point and then morphed into the skeleton ships. Prefer to look to players to provide this sort of content, take on these roles inside the sandbox rather than have specific content. Novel does help explain why there isn't this sort of content.... Joe has talked with Mike about the potential for content which might encourage players to have the opportunities to play in this way perhaps.

IGN Interview - discussing painting canvas, plans to bring into game?

Did exist in the prototype - did discuss if SoT should be 1st or 3rd person, painting canvas idea arose out of these discussions. Has significant technical challenges in a service based game. Fantastic idea but storing these images in a session based game is tricky and needs a lot of work. Want to do it, it's brilliant, question is when and how, inventory adjustments and other tweaks help to make this and other features a more realistic possibility.

Sea of Tease - 'Shrouded' - Next big dlc - Not named fully but they like the word Shrouded as being part of the title?

When sailing, you find peaceful moments, will there be opportunities for card games or more activities?

No kind of specific plans atm, but with the inventory problem being addressed there are a bunch of items which have been prototyped which allow the journey between islands to be mixed up a bit with more things to do on the ship. Comes down to when, some things are being worked on at the moment which speak to the idea of more things to do, one of which has been requested by a LOT of people. Have tried things in the past and hope to add them in the future.

Those are some fierce looking pirates.
I'm gonna try to describe what each one of them looks like they'd be based on their crew ledger picture:

    Adam Park:
    Blood thirsty Scaly Wag.

    Peter Hentze:
    Jolly Old Sea Dog.

    Joe Neate:
    The Fight ready Captain.

    Andrew Preston:
    Cut Throat back Stabber.

  • @skulliah I have two

  • @musicmee I agree with you on this one

  • @friedwilly could be?

  • @musicmee sagte in Sea of thieves New York Comic-Con:
