Bans For 120 FOV?!

  • Hello, i have been playing a lot of arena recently and i have noticed that people have been making youtube videos (montages) with 120 FOV. I would like to suggest that i am not happy for people cheating on this game. They have to think about playing the game properly and not cheating/adjusting game files and also being fair on other players. As i have been playing the game for almost three years now and i hate the idea of people cheating on any game; This has recently came out and i want to suggest that you should change it so they can't use 120 FOV for the further future. People have been making artcles of adding 120 FOV in game and i completley diagree with this (i think they just want it so there's no risk of ban). I feel like we should put something in place and stop all of these players using 120 FOV it is not acceptable behaviour in my opinion.

  • @akx-x-vibezz If you are so against players altering game files, why would you post instructions on how to locate said file?

  • "Cheating is bad guys, but here is how to cheat."

(Edit: For simple transparency, the original unedited version demonstrated part of the process to do the 120 FOV. It included the file path where to add the change. If you are going to edit a substantial edit along those lines, it makes sense to make sure people know its an edit. Its just makes those who commented on the original post look like they are making unsubstantiated claims.)

  • @bizi-betiko This is not meant to be how, its explaining how people do it rather than how to do it. Also the 120 FOV file isnot uploaded so without that theres no way.

  • @akx-x-vibezz This issue is particularly exclusive to the Steam version of the game. You can't do it with the Xbox or MS Store version.

Genuinely I feel like Rare would have had this handled a long time ago, but due to the way Steam handles files, some are exposed and editable, even though they normally aren't. The most Rare can currently do is punish whoever is running around with these file edits.

On another note: 120 FOV is u g l y. The game legitimately doesn't look that good with an FoV above the intended 90, and "certain types" of users mainly use it for... better vision? Either way, these people clearly have no care for the intended limitations of the game, and if they're free to make clips and videos showcasing this exploit, they run the risk of a Rare representative noticing, and rightfully punishing them for it.

...Not a lot of people were banned for this exploit yet, but I can imagine another ban wave like this past summer would ruffle quite a number of feathers, and all over an exploit Rare can't feasibly fix because of the way Steam works.

  • @nex-stargaze Good point i 100% agree.

  • Why do you care how and who play this game. Just play your game and take pleasure. Or you think you are a good player, but got killed by 120 fov players? There is no competitive way in Sea of Thieves, no ranks. Thats why just chill, man. It is not a real problem of cheating. There are a lot of free cheats freely available on the internet. If you talk about cheating, better ask to devs to create or add some anti-cheat system rather than fix FOV changing.

  • I believe their is one simple solution to this, add it in the game so 120 fov is accessible to everyone as yes i believe it is unfair but they havent done anything about it and i would enjoy 120 fov rather than 90 fov, what they could do is change the lowest fov to 90 and the max to 120 so everyone gets what they want : )

  • @leg-sea-bot I do take into account i have been killed by 120 FOV players in the past. The main point in this post is to make people aware and give them an opinion on 120 FOV and weather or not its players havinf fun, they should'nt do it in the first place.

  • @chunkydluffy I agree to an extent with players altering the gaem settings so they can get what they want. The part where they can cheat and think its all safe and not breaking rules annoys me, but i do agree to this to a sertain extent up to where people cheat it's classed as selfish.

  • @akx-x-vibezz i completely understand how it feels as if they are cheating but it isnt that game breaking it is just a preference, personally i do not use 120 fov but i wish i could because i enjoy the look of it, the issue is that it is limited to steam pc users and not the rest of the people, clearly rare wont ban people because content creators use it and no one has gotten banned, they should add it permanently so everyone can enjoy 120 fov

  • @akx-x-vibezz i along with many others do not consider this cheating but simply preference like me i only change fov in any game purely because i like how it looks, as for videos those can be edited to look like that.

  • @chunkydluffy Again it's a good idea to a certain extent. I get what you meen about people having opinions and prefernces. But if people didn't cheat and use it in the first place, there would be no temptations for others to use it and the game would continue as normal with 60-90 FOV.

  • @snowtheheat I get what you meen about people having opinions and prefernces. But if people didn't cheat and use it in the first place, there would be no temptations for others to use it and the game would continue as normal with 60-90 FOV.

  • @akx-x-vibezz one thing with low fov is it can cause motion sickness, i know personally i prefer a higher fov so i can play for longer but i currently use the microsoft version, the thing is rare has said you can get banned but no one has been and they wont do anything about it, i believe that they should either remove people from obtaining 120 fov or add 120 fov for everyone, otherwise people will just buy the steam version and use it until they do something because this is Rare we are talking about they wont do anything to people who use it

  • @chunkydluffy I belive Rare will take action if needed, i bet they're currently making the dussicion weather to add 120 FOV or not. I have never expirienced motion sickness on Sea of Thieves on 60-90 FOV and im sure other people have. But clearly if that is the issue then it can not be purely FOV.

  • @akx-x-vibezz the biggest fear is that rare isnt doing anything about it, im fine with 90 fov but me and a few other people i know have had issues with motion sickness is SoT, i usually use higher FoV in other games because of this and i am fine with 90 fov like i said but knowing i could use 120 just makes me kinda sad and i know a lot of people who feel the same way

  • @chunkydluffy Yes. I am not going to get into a repeat of myself, but fair enough if you did get motion sickness or not it may have been FOV. But if people like it or not they still should not be using it untill people realise they're cheating! There has been people banned in the past for FOV. In the rules is says 'Cheat or hack. We have a zero tolerance approach to any form of in-game hacking or cheating, and transgression can result in a permanent ban.' People edit these files and want 120 FOV because the thing it "improves how their game looks" or even sometimes to "get better." There is no need to say this is something about personal preference at the end of the day it's cheating and it is making other people jelous because they can edit some files. If they really want to do 120 FOV go to another game, im sure theres plenty others for them to pick out with 120 FOV, and this clearly isn't the game for them.

  • 120 FoV should just be added to the game, people have complained about how restricting the current FoV is and I agree. Rare should just make it a feature in game.

  • @theeggoplant Fair enough, but i think Rare need to stop and resist future updates, work on 120 FOV and delete it completley.

  • @akx-x-vibezz I could be really bad at this, but how do I know somebody has 120 FOV ? What are you looking at videos ? Examples ?

Haven't you seen the message about a wider viewing angle affecting performance? If this was enabled for everyone, you'd effectively be forcing those on lower-end platforms to have poor performance for a wider view or a decent performance with a narrower view - it wouldn't be fair to them!

  • Everybody exploiting , cheating etc... should be banned!!!

This is against the code and bad sportmanship.

Not sure, why do you think its 120 FOV ?

I mean it's definitely not 90 FOV like you can tell by these images https://imgur.com/a/xrbu8gQ

(in game FOV does not effect looking at map in anyway btw)

You can't get 120 FOV without modifying game files that goes against xbox'es Community standarts

"Permanent suspension or device ban, if you commit an egregious violation that includes, but is not limited to: hacking, modding, profile tampering, fraud, trading or stealing accounts or Gamertags, severe racial remarks, impersonating Xbox staff, displaying nudity, repeatedly creating"

And as you use xbox account in Sea of Thieves you agree to follow those things. So it doesn't matter if it's 120 or 121 as it goes over the in game limits and is only obtainable through modding.

  • If YOU feel like this is cheating, then that's your problem, since people playing with 70 FOV Self chosen from the menu could consider other people using 90 FOV as cheaters

The real issue is game devs not letting people use higher FOVs as in basically every game since 15-20 years

If you feel like I'm cheating because I use aimbot then it's your problem. Only reason 120 is considered as cheating is because you can't get it without moding and I don't even think you can get it on MS edition. 70 to 90 is not cheating because ANYONE is able to do it without going into files or downloadin 3rt party software.

The real issue is game devs not letting people use higher FOVs as in basically every game since 15-20 years

Could be seen that way to, but is the problem them allowing higher FOV's or rare not allowing us to use higher ones?

  • I think this post needs to be locked.

  • Ahoy maties!

Just going to jump in on this one.

Bans have been issued for players that modify game code to give themselves an advantage. This is not something Rare condones and is something that goes against the Xbox ToS.

Editing a game file to give yourself an advantage over someone else completely goes against the spirit of the game and good sportsmanship.

    Dropping anchor here!
