Different colored glowing lights on ships

  • Every now and then I see a distant ship on the horizon at night and it looks like they have a bunch of different colored lights all over the place. They don't seem to be coming from their lanterns, either.

What are these colored lights? They sort of make the ship look like a ghost ship.

Are you talking about Skeleton ships ? They have a different layout than the player ships.

    Just sail towards one :).

No, these are definitely player ships. I might have heard something along the way that treasure "glows" if it's on a ship? Is this true? Does it glow even if it's hidden out of sight below deck?

Villainous skulls glow, as do the coloured gems and some other items. Even when below deck: i.e. the glow can come through the grate on the deck

Having lots of ghost items from the ghost fleet on a player boat will also glow.

  • @lem0n-curry Got it. Is there a list of exactly what is visible to other players and what is not?

This is probably what you're seeing, although you generally can't see treasure until you get within a certain distance of it. If you're seeing this on ships that are very far away, it's either players changing the color of their lanterns or skeleton ships.

Next time you see something like that, get a screenshot. We'll be able to identify what's going on if we have a photo.

  • @xatencio6729 or it could even be if the player is using the different flame colours from the well of fate

    Got one here

That doesn't seem to be the spots where lanterns are on a galleon. Is this exposed treasure and, if so, could these pirates have hidden the glow by storing these chests in the lower decks?

  • @xatencio6729 Seems like a skalleon to me.

  • @xatencio6729

That's a skelly galleon. You can tell from the blue and green lights, and the high placement of the light on the front. If you look at the back mast, it's a little off kilter.

So does treasure not glow at all from that distance? I'm aware of the colored glow of treasure when I'm on an island, btw.

  • @xatencio6729 I think that is too far to see the glow from treasure even if it were above deck. You have to be relatively close to see treasure floating in the water or sitting on an island. The same goes for what is aboard a ship. If you are carrying a skull or mermaid gem on your ship, it isn't lighting up like a beacon.

  • @xatencio6729

What the guy before me said lol. At that distance you're only gonna see the lights. Most players are usually going to keep their lights off too.

  • @xatencio6729

Thanks for posting the photo; that helped us narrow down exactly what's going on.

As PithyRumble, Lem0nCurry, and Ostara MK have already pointed out, the ship in your photo is a skeleton galleon. Those lights on and above the deck are how you identify those ships (plus the tattered sails and leaning masts); player ships don't have "tree house" forts in the masts, but skelleons do.

Additionally, you won't be able to see treasure glint at that distance; you'll need to be much closer before treasure (and players) get rendered in.

Can player pirates purchase any sails that look tattered like those skeleton ships? Or can I safely assume that if the sails are tattered then it's an NPC?

Although you can acquire sails that are tattered, none of them have the degree of damage that the skeleton ship sails have. Compare the Athena Ghost sails and the Kraken sails (both of which are pretty torn up) to the photo you posted of the skeleton galleon.

  • @xatencio6729

Judge skelly sloops by the sails, skelly galleons by the masts.
