I think the cycling through pirates we have now should be an option for sure, but we should just be able to make ourselves the pirates we want to. I really don't see anyone who appreciates the current system. I think it'd be way more fun and creative to be able to make your perfect pirate, whether you want to make it to look like yourself or like a character you have made up in your mind. It would be way more immersive and I'm big on immersing myself in games as are many sot players.
Character customisarion
It's so weird how different opinions people have. I find pirate generator great, because there are no two identical pirates. Everyone you meet on the sea are different and it is because you can't control the generator. Pirates have scars, missing teeth, imperfections that make them unique and I love it. Then I come to the forum and read this and I'm so confused. What a weird world we live in.
Imo allowing people to create their own pirates would result of everyone looking the same, like captain Jack Sparrow or other famous character. So in fact, with the same input, we got to a completely opposite conclusions.

I know right lol. From my perspective, all those things you describe are cosmetic. It's the same generic few heads/faces on the sea of thieves but maybe one has a scar and the other had a pink afro.

@hegemon3 it would be fine if there was like false teeth or something if you got a character look you wanted but they ended up having major mth mouth. I'd like to be able to choose some elements of the creation as it took me hours to find a character i liked that I could see that he had all his teeth on. (My first character i did the same and didn't realize she had her grill smashed in and had to reroll her via potion)

It was a joke and retoric, but... yeap... That's an impossible and terrible job! O_o
But.. now seriously... did you ever get into other game's char customization forums? or even VR games? 49% of ppl wants unrealisticly strong alpha-males and 49% wants unrealistic female proportions. (I reserve 2% for weird ppl).
People just wants to feel happy with what they are playing with.

It's a matter of presentation then, not customization, and I fully agree with that. We should be able to fully inspect the characters we're choosing from (and paying real money for).
I would leave the random IPG as the method of which they are generate, else we will end up with everyone looking like jack sparrow. It also is a revenue source for rare as people buy the potions
HOWEVER, I do think there should be at least two prefences you can set.
Gender: male, androgynous , female
Build: skinny, athetic, med, heavy, fatThis is so you don`t waste time on looking at pirates you have zero interest in.
OR
Spool up the IPG, once you select a fav, the IPG uses that fav as the median point for the next round. We still get random pirates but we do not waste game time.
Optional:
The age of your pirate should be based on the number on the number of hours played.Zero to 500 hrs, young
500 to 1000 hrs ealry twenties
1000 to 2000 hr 30s etcThis would make it a destinction to be old. BUT there are a butch of old pirates in the game already so maybe DEV, put this in the Sea of Theaves 2.0 you are going to release in 2030....
I disagree with a lot of these responses saying that no two pirates are the same and everyone is unique. This is false.
I’ve personally generated thousands of pirates, I keep a potion and while I’m waiting for a friend to join up or I just feel like checking out all the pirates, I’ll just sit a generate.
There aren’t as much of a variation as people believe. You have a hand full of head shapes, noses, lips, brows, eyes etc. these can only be rearranged so many ways and since some parts are exclusive to certain pirate types makes the difference between pirates even less. If you spend any amount of time generating pirates you will notice many of them look similar just with a different nose, chin etc.
The pirate generator has needed an update for a while, even if it’s just filters like: Gender, Body size, Rogue or Hero, Default makeup On/Off, Scars On/Off. it really needs some attention.
