New Alliance System: Joining a game with more than 4 friends possible?

  • With information emerging about the new alliance system in game, one big question comes to mind:
Does this allow (or pave the way towards) you to form multi ship groups of friends before you load in to a game?

Suggestion: At the ship/crew selection screen before loading into the game world, add a new option for "form alliance group" Where you get to invite up to 8 (maybe more?) friends and then select which ships they are assigned to. This option would still allow for the use of matchmaking to fill slots (if desired by the group), or could be set to private/invite only.

Alternatively; A more simplistic solution: the ability once you've selected a ship and formed a crew to "join friends session/form alliance" next to the "set sail" option. This would enable you to join the server of someone on your friends list who already has a ship in game with your ship and crew, automatically forming an alliance. This button could only appear if someone on your friends list is currently in a session.

The only limitation i have with SoT is the inability to have more than four friends play together on the same server. Hopefully the alliance system is heading in that direction, if not already capable of what i'm proposing.

Thanks for all your hard work Rare peoples! SoT continues to be an amazing experience, see you on the seas! AArrrrr

  • I hope not, I hope it's about making new friends and convincing others within a server that you are worth being in an alliance with.

As always I feel the only way you should be able to have multiple ships filled with friends is if you bargain and buy ships from others within the server. It's one of the most fun things to do, convincing others to give you their ship.

  • @gritspitter I believe it'll be something to do with the pennants they mentioned in the video today! But we shall have to wait and see for more word on this subject.

  • @mc-rossco absolutely, that's 100% what the alliance system is for and will do. I'm just hoping in addition it might lead to expanded friends list capabilities. I have more than 4 friends that play SoT and we can't all join a game together at the moment.

  • @mad-jack-ketch i hope so, so far the pennant system sounds like its just in game. Not sure it'll be something you set up outside of the game world. Just signifies by color that ships are in a group. Kind of my point with the post: will there be a way to utilize the system outside of the game world to facilitate more than 4 friends playing together?

  • Allowing players to form multi-ship fleets before entering the game would only work if the number of ships was significantly higher. The impression I got from the video on alliances was meant to complement systems already in place and add another wrinkle to encounters on the seas, not form an elite fleet and kill the other two or three poor ships on the server.

  • Highly doubtful. There are currently only 6 ships in a server, so if you can control who is in even two of them, it'd be way too OP. Everything they've said about it points to a system that allows us to initiate an alliance with another crew we come across naturally in the world

  • @rockinpodunk hopefully with the addition of new territories like the Forsaken Shores coming soon they will be able to increase the ship cap. Hopefully doubling or tripling the effective map size will double or triple the number of people any one server can support. There are many games already available or in development which support dozens if not hundreds of players simultaneously. Very frustrating to want to share this game with additional gaming friends but not be able to do so with more than 3 at a time.

Yeah but that take time and you need the right people to be on the server (Galleon willing to give up their ship) while joining a server with a group of friends would make it so all my friends can join regardless of situation.

I do admit that this would open some floodgates with griefing. I mean people are going to be really angry if they get attacked by 2 galleons.

Hoewever who says you can't do that with this alliance system, just roll up to the first ship you see and be like "Hey, wanna fight everyone?"

Having had 2 galleons on a server a few times with my Discord crew I can safely say that it's actually kinda hard to co-ordinate 2 ships in combat. So it might actually work to have 2 teams on a server. (however no more then 2 because then it'll just be a domination bid IMHO).

None of those games can be compared to sea of thieves though. They are completely different types of game altogether. I think the current balance of map size and ship number is perfect for the type of experience sea of thieves is.

If they make the map bigger you'd be sailing for ages and never get anything done, and if the increase the rate of ship encounters you'd constantly be stuck in pvp and never get anything done.

I definitely get the desire to play with more than just 3 friends, and I'm sure eventually they will figure out a way to let that happen without upsetting the balance too much

  • @gritspitter In my mind this kind of negates one of the key factors of the game. You don't know who's on that ship over there and have no idea of their intentions - this in itself builds a sense of tension, and it's up to you to decide how to react to the other players you come across. Allowing us to form alliances simply expands and solidifies (to some extent) the options we have when it comes to interacting with other players.

If we're allowed to form these alliances with friends, that tension is lessened quite substantially, which could detract from the spirit of the game.

Aside from that there is also the argument of unfair server farmer for gold/rep or unfair allied crews destroying other ships on the server. Personally that's not an issue for me; once you're in an alliance with randoms you can easily achieve this. The point is you're suggesting the ability to preform these alliances at the start of the session rather than use the tools given + your own soft skills to come to an accord with unknown players in game. I have to say I'm against that on the face of it.

  • do not beleive this will allow you to invite friends to join the same server, they want you to make NEW friends, with the ENTIRE server, as there is literally no reason NOT to.. welcome to PVE!

That is a feature that is being looked at...see the E3 video , they mention it.

Great, I dont think this alliance system coming out in next update is going to facilitate it at launch.

Being able to get a entire group on one server, share loot, level ten athena will be done in a matter of days, boosting easier than ever. Ah well, they obviously want it to be sea of friends, might as well take the pvp out completely (they pretty much just did).

Its all cosmetic so no one cares, but why even have rep or factions at all at this point when you will be able to just boost it like mad anyway if you can get the whole group together on an entire server

Because the game is intended to be a casual team up and play. Not 10 hour a day grind to be the best. The reps are there just to give people playing the content a feeling that it means something...It's arbitrary really. Right now at least.

This won't destroy PVP, too many bored players will see to that.

But the people who are not PL and still casually playing, unless they exploit the mechanics by taking part it Athena just to level up. Will probably get enjoyment out of it, and it will help reduce the amount of people who just do PVP.

Given how every single player not in my crew has actively tried to kill us, evidently nobody cares about making "NEW friends."
