been away from the SoT for a while and found a statue in the water glowing green, it slowly drains your health when near and hitting it with the sword or shooting it with weapons or cannons has no effect.
I didnt know what they were called so google wasnt too helpful
but yeah what are they and can you open /collect / sell them? if so how?

You can barrel them and/or cannon them too. That's a way people get some red ones when they are solo or duo.

good to know, i did try the cannons but as the statue was in the water somewhat the hits kept glitching either in front of it or behind it!

It's way harder than I made it sound. lol Also, when not being damaged, they regain health.

If I remember correctly, 5 barrels will do the trick.

You can actually solo a green one. Hit it with your sniper once, or blunderbuss couple of times. Keep your distance while shooting, so u don't get damage, but can melee asap.
After shooting, keep hitting it with your cutlass.
As soon as your health turns red, eat 2 bananas. Continue slashing and voila! :)
Btw, don't know if you know it, but you can sell the gems with all factions (OOS, Merchant and GH). Sell it to the one you need the most rep for, or the one you hate grinding rep for :) Most of the ppl choose for merchant tho :)

Mermaid statues!
They give you gems that you can sell to any trading company you need reputation with. Blue statues can be easily destroyed with cutlass slashes, green ones can also be destroyed solo, you need to have at least 3 bananas and pistol or Eye of Reach equipped with your cutlass. Shoot it with the firearm of your choice until you have no bullets then just slash it with the cutlass. It will require more slashes than the blue one that's why you need bananas to heal when your health is low. The red one can be doable with minimum 3 people using same method as the green. You can use gunpowder kegs if the mermaid is close to the shore, otherwise it's not going to work. The prices of the gems are always 1000 for blue, 1500 green, 2000 red.
Edit: Happy sailing and don't forget that you have some commendations as well to unlock by selling 10 of each gems!

I thought the commendation is for selling 10 of each, not destroying.. I could be wrong tho :)
@ktingaling Yeah my bad but you need to destroy them to get the gems :) and who destroys them and leaves the gems behind anyways.
@princes-lettuce Well said! Without gunpowder barrels, a well coordinated duo crew can take out a red one. Just alternate eating bananas and catching your breath so that someone is always damaging it and it can't heal itself.
