Social Island - Social Hub

  • I previously got a lot of support from a wide variety of players, thought it would be good to bring the idea back. My OP in the mega thread; https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/29122/mega-thread-safe-zones/2

To make it clear, I'm not pushing for a safe zone. I am pushing for a social space.

    The Basics
This certain zone in question, would not allow the cashing in of chests or any other trade company missions. Nor would this island allow any chest within its radius, in order to stop people fleeing and camping with loot. This island would strictly be a place for socialising and games. Maybe a great place to buy better cosmetics and a place to trade with other players. Poker to play and bet against other pirates, put your gold on the line in other mini games against players such as blackjack or some creative twists on mini PvP games. Find a crewmate or join one. Just some island or place in which pirates can just kick it back and relax rather than worry if there ship on port is receiving plentiful of cannonballs to the hull.

    How could it be implemented?
As suggested in the topic, having this area as a staging point before setting sail would be hugely beneficial. Catch up on the latest community news, find a crew, crew member or buy a new rare cosmetic at the auction house all before setting sail into the Sea of Thieves! Then having the ability to travel back to the social hub; Personally, I feel like the ideal way to implement something like this, would be to add an island that players can travel to in the corner of the map. Our very own pirates paradise, a vibrant Tortuga where rival crews can drink grog and new friends can be found. I think there could be so much romance in a place like this, within Sea of Thieves. Once entering its radius it would transition into a mini cinematic, mirroring what is currently in the game when you enter a point of interest, island, shipwreck etc and would read along the lines of 'Port Royal - Pirate Law'. It would then instance you into the port town, on a seperate server with more players. Having a system in place in which ships that have been recently damaged are not able to enter its radius would be beneficial, in order to stop players fleeing combat. A well lit port city after a long and successful voyage to travel to in order to spend your gold, with more exotic cosmetics and purchasables being here. A busy, bustling port town with unique districts, fist fights and duels taking place on the streets. A crew of fresh faced sailors about to set sail on their first adventure, not after hearing out tips and tricks from the battle scarred pirate they met, DiscoDarren73 first though! The potential is huge.

    Shops/Mini Games/Activities
These are all the suggestions and ideas put forward. Filling this place with unique shops, fun activities and interesting merchants or vendors is paramount for this island. What can be found in the port town?

    Games
Bet and wager gold against other pirates! Receive gleaming gold for beating a mini game.

    1. Poker - wager some precious treasure, trinkets or gold against other pirates. I can imagine the voice chat at this table being very entertaining.
    2. Dice
    3. Blackjack
    4. Boxing - whether you want a good old punch up with a sworn enemy or you're entering a tournament against other grizzled pirates, just make sure you remove that damn hook!
    5. Fishing Tournament - compete against other pirates and experienced fishermen at the dock, who can grab the biggest catch!
    6. Arm Wrestling

    Shops/Merchants
More rare and exotic items for a limited time can be found here, along with a huge array of different shops and interesting merchants!

    1. Bounty Merchant - place gold on a certain nemesis. Famous bounty hunters will be mounted on the walls and tales will be spread far and wide of their legend.
    2. Musician - Eager to learn and perfect more songs or looking for an instrument abit more continental? The musician has a variety of musical instruments and chromatic scales for sale!
    3. Fisherman Shop - All of your rods, tackle, bait, nets, and even books on where to find the best fishing spots can be found right here.
    4. Trader - Got an old cosmetic skin you don't use? Sell it to the trader for some gold.

    PvP
Adding a duel mechanic to this place, would be a welcome addition. Simply challenge a pirate to duel, agreeing on an amount of gold for the winner of the duel. It adds more excitement into the place and really gives the feel that PvP players want, of a pirates haven such as Tortuga with fistfights and guns shooting. That way players who are there to browse, buy, socialise, earn a small fortune playing poker and drink grog can do so uninterrupted and those there to cause a ruckus and beat a pirate up for there gold, can go about there business too.

All input and suggestions to further this idea, will be welcomed with open arms. Making this a place for everyone to enjoy. Thanks for reading and safe sailing!

  • good to see you again after all of this time @kinggZANGA. like before, i fully support the idea.

as a reference for discussion, i would like to point out a thread i made not to long ago, and would like to have a continuation of it's discussion on this one. visit here

respectively, i would also like to link the post made on the mega-thread discussing safe zones as proof that many pirates already support the idea. visit here

as for my personal opinion on the subject, i think it would be fair to have this island be on a different server entirely. some dont like the idea of an escape, but than again, if you are going to this island, you obviously dont have loot, which means your pursuers are a combat griefers and shame on them if they cant process that truth. plus it would not require the devs to make a "take all loot in this area" system since you cant bring loot with you from another server anyway. exiting on either side of the map would bring you to a random PvP server. this is a simple alternative; im fine with either your concept or mine.

EDIT: to add to this hub concept, i would like to suggest two things.

    Districs

the main tavern would be located on the slums district, where the s**m of the seas lurk, brawl, and pass-out from all their grog. the main district is where the basic shops would be. the noble district will be where the island's pirate owners will be, selling more expensive goods to anyone that can afford them. the docks is where pirates can dock their ships if they want to. all factions will be located on the docks, but will only give voyages.

    lore

the pirate hub (current name) is an island owned by a pirate lord more interested in business. the pirate lord enforces four laws: none shall shed blood unless in an honorable duel, none shall sink a ship unless in an honorable duel, all ships shall have their cargo confiscated upon approaching this island, and all pirates keep to the code.

  • I supoort this idea. Would likely need to be a completely separate zone you can log into. Would support more players and wouldn’t break the phases instance mechanics of the open seas.

Ha-haar! Ahoy there shipmate! Great to hear from you @MysticDragon297 and love your input!

I'll be posting in your topic later when I have some spare time and it's great to see you spreading the word of our beloved social island. I've read through that post and you have some great ideas.

Great point you bring up about it being on a separate server, that would be a lot easier to implement. I completely respect your opinion and understand your concerns about it being a physical island in the world. I guess I'm just in love with the idea of a busy port within the world. Either way, we, Rare and the community can build on either of our concepts of the social island. It's all about perfecting the implementation of something like this, in my opinion ofcourse.

Really enjoyed reading your districts section, really great ideas. Can imagine walking down the tight, dark alleys of the slum district bumping into shifty barnacle bearded pirates! Once again, thanks so much for all the input!

  • I believe that a "Social Space" is inevitable and we will see some form of one at some point.

My idea from the previous thread about how this could be implemented, while keeping both PvP and PvE camps happy!

A way to do this where you could have instancing while keeping things mainly as they are now in the main game space while not creating a "safe zone" and/or an edge camping situation could be...

Have a social island that's "ringed" in a large fog bank. No matter what angle you approach the fog, you would only see a faint darkened outline of an island deep within the fog. As you approach from open water and enter the fog bank you begin instancing. As you exit out of the fog into the center, you are now in the social hub island instance.

The fog bank ring should be a fairly good distance from the island within to include more area for the larger amount of ships that will be docking around island as well as space for people to have ship races around the island closer to the fog bank and/or fishing or other whatnots.

If you are in active battle (or have fired cannon, etc within the last xx mins) and/or have any loot or faction items at all on board as you attempted to enter the fogbank, you would not instance and would simply come out the other side of the fog (bank would be much smaller in this case or simply vanish after the game ready checked the criteria for entry). This would keep people from exploiting the game mechanic of fighting to keep your loot and not simply running away into a "safe space" if being chased or trying to avoid battle, etc.

Once there, you could do all the social things mentioned in this thread (and others) at the island (swap crews/ships, meet up, drink grog, play games, foot/boat races, play music, dance, show off yer fanciest gear, a bit of drunken brawling, even anchor a bunch of boats together lake tahoe style and just party between them, etc.) All resource barrels/crates on ships would be "withdrawal" locked while in this zone (to stop grieving), although you could still "deposit" into them if you wished.

Rare could even keep weapons active, that way if people want to have drunken shoot outs after a bit too much grog, they could do that as well. Just have it that if you shoot someone, you're jailed/stocked for a min or two (unless your crew breaks you out earlier). The dead pirate would simply re-zone on their ship or at the bar, etc. close-by and continue on their way (or look for revenge). Having active weapons would also allow for shooting ranges (or galleries... i.e. shooting bottles of grog/ducks/pirate cut-outs moving side to side carnival style), etc. to help pirates perfect their weapon proficiency. All Pubs are "weapon" locked. Got beef... Take it outside boys! Basically, plenty of gold/time sink activities!

After you've had you're fill of the social activities...

You get back on your ship (or another if you've swapped members around) and head for the fog bank in any direction you wish, you are then brought out to the main instance (which may or may not be the one you left - this would be a good way for Rare to maintain high population of the main instances as there would be lots of traffic coming and going into and out of the social space) and continue on your way within the main world. Using this process would keep the main instances more "fresh" as turn-around would be higher!

*Having this be the process would negate any need for "safe spaces" within/around the greater world (Rare's desire).

*It keeps people from camping the perimeter of the social island as there'd be no way to know if/when/where a ship would emerge from the fog bank (and they wouldn't have treasure anyway as they couldn't bring it in with them to begin with).

*And it would allow for both sets of gamers (pvp/pve) to have the things they want in the game without hindering each other. It would also negate the need to have "separate" servers that would functionally break the playerbase apart.

PVE'rs are happy due to having the social bits they want, when they're feeling the need for it (note: logging in would remain as it is now and anyone wanting to visit the social island would have to sail their ship(s) to it).

PVP'rs are happy because there are no safe spaces in the greater game, and the turnaround of possible "targets" is refreshed faster as people enter and leave the social space for the main game world zones.

    Win/Win! :)

  • I would only like a social zone if it was separate thing from the rest of the game.

Have it as an optional place to launch into from the main menu. It could be a space outside the game world that's solely for socializing and showing off your pirate. No ships, no treasure, just pirate interactions. Like a lobby when waiting to start a game basically.

  • Server size would have to be a lot bigger. Otherwise the game could get boring if two galleons (8 people which is half the server) are hanging out on this island the whole time.

Otherwise, it should probably be on its own server.

One way or another though, I do think this social space would be a great addition to the game.

  • @kinggzanga

So whilst i am sailing looking for trouble...
all the other 15 people on the server are playing dice and horse-shoe trowing at the "sosial" island or whatever.

If this is to be implemented the servers need plenty more players or the players need to log onto a different mode. So that those who wants to play SoT the way its meant to, can.

Once entering the islands radius it would proceed to instance you to the social hub, meaning you would be leaving the server, resulting in players replacing you and not upsetting the balance. The social hub would be on a separate server, thus granting more players to be there simultaneously, in turn adding that busy port town feeling. Thanks for the feedback, bud!

  • @casesugar401098

    Thanks for the feedback, Sugar!

  • I like this idea as I have thought about how pirates could band together as friends and not have just a safe zone. I agree that there should be no turn ins at this area as it would ruin the pirating lifestyle and nature of the game

  • 100% agree this should be a thing. It should have been in the game at launch too. Really disappointed that all our cries for this to be in the game have fallen on deaf ears.

  • There better NOT be any mini pvp type games! ! If i get griefed by poker players i will come here and demand a safe zone inside the safe zone free of mini pvp bullies like them !

Dont fear, sailor! I'm sure with enough support and discussion, we could see a place like this being implemented into the game. Thanks for the support, sea dog!

Maybe even a notice board within the social hub, showing all the players seeking a crew or a crewmate. Great to see that you're onboard!

  • I would like social island but RARE wants us all the kill each other in this game since there is no NPC ships (that we know of yet)

I am just hoping they add more life to ports and the taverns..and if they have central hub for all players I assume it'll be closer to some navy base so they cant linger around waiting to jump players

  • @kinggzanga
Oh heck ya!!!! How about you?

  • As of right now, I can't quite tell you how many times I've ended up in the tavern chatting and drinking and just being silly with people from crews not my own.

I'd be lying, if I didn't say the experience wasn't made more special by the fact that they could kill me at any moment but didn't.

I honestly think the threat of violence makes the whole social aspect more fun.

For sure. I can't wait to put that peg leg on and set sail!

  • @capn-light9g

The island wouldn't disrupt or change the current social encounters on outposts. Plenty of people have suggested ideas such as a duel mechanic on the social hub, meaning you could win a little gold with that violence. I do understand where you're coming from though and thank you very much for the input sea dog!

  • @kinggzanga I like the idea of social Island. Somewhere to chill out and share stories, brag about having the most gold :D

  • I think the best way to implement this would be to create a separate zone (map) which acts like a lobby where you can recruit crews and get up to all sorts of non-hostile shenanigans.

Think of something like the hubs in MMO's, such as Lion's Arch in Guild Wars 2 etc...

It would be a no PvP zone, except for consensual minigames, where you can look for friends, crews and perhaps in the future, extended quests for two or three crews to play alongside each other.

It would have to be a totally separate area from the main map and have no influence on the main game. However, minigames with rewards such as titles or cosmetic items (even if they only last a day or a week) giving people bragging rights.

If you take anything from this post, it's the suggestion that the Hub would be a place where you can recruit crew or look for a crew that needs players.

  • So, pleasure island? But without the part where you turn into a donkey?

  • OP has been updated with a couple ideas, mainly concerning the possible shops and merchants that can be found. Hope everyone had a good final beta weekend!

  • a drinking contest would be cool as a mini-game.

imagine this: one player invites another to a drinking contest. once the player accepts, circles are placed around both players and each is given a tankard of grog. a player must drink one tankard of grog each round and they must stay within their circle until the round ends. the game ends when one player steps out of their circle.

I really like this idea. We need a gold sink and a place to really socialize because people are not doing that on the high seas. It is either attack or avoid.

  • Always need a safe Harbour to spend that hard won swag and have a drinkydrink or twelve. All for the idea of a social hub with no in game repercussions. Only if it can't be exploited or give any player an in game advantage.
