Sea of thieves 2025 edition suggestions

  • I don't know how big the changes between the 2023 and 2024 editions have been so I don't know if this is something that is within scope or if it is something that would be better off as a full rework however these are a bunch of changes that based on the steam reviews and my own experience should be implemented with the next huge update.

Drop the Xbox 1, this is controversial (but I can imagine not the most controversial take on this list) the Xbox 1 was released 11 years ago, based on the release cycle of Microsoft consoles if they are going to make a new version it is very likely that it will be announced in the next two years, so it's time to drop last gen, this should in theory improve server performance and allow more features that might not have been available due to the older hardware of the Xbox 1.

safer seas improvements (this one is the one that's going to get the most hate) make it so that the only things locked in safer seas are Athenas and reapers as from my knowledge reapers are fully pvp and Athenas is essentially the rivals to the reapers, also having it so that other crews are in the same server as you allows for the game to feel more alive and again saves server space because a new server isn't being fired up for every safer seas player, with this you can also have a form of PvP where the crew of the ship can vote if they want to fight another ship or not (possibly adding a flag "looking for a fight" where you get to challenge others) this can also lead to safer seas players being able to experience certain easter eggs, adding in sovereigns and captained ships as well would actually give a reason to allow for trinket unlocks in safer (there's a whole list of reasons why people would want this)

an alternative if captained ships dont get added to safer at least add the option to have trinkets on the ships as you can earn them in safer but cant display them.

  • @quickhakker honestly, the only faction that should be locked out of safer seas is reapers. Athena has been out since day one and honestly the 1/3rd pay and no emissary option is enough punishment for safer seas, shouldn't even stop their rep progress IMHO.

(Well I guess the hourglass factions too but they are all pvp only things so)

  • @hitash-levat the reduction in gold has been changed. It's now 100% just lower rep caps.

  • @hiradc oh really? Nice! I'm fine with that. It's already cut drastically before adding emissary bonus, then it's basically a fraction of the amount

  • Some more world boss creatures in the seas would be great besides Krackens and Megalodons. Maybe big whales etc that are very hard to kill, like mobydick etc?

  • I don't think Captained ships will be ever on Safer Seas. The recent changes have made it clear that Safer Seas is only meant to be a temporary mode to get players used to sailing and ready for the High Seas. That said, I could see them add temporary (session) trinket spots on chartered vessels - both on Safer Seas and High Seas.

it's time to drop last gen, this should in theory improve server performance

Just to clear one thing up, as it's been said again, and again... and again (even so much as to have been addressed by Drew Stevens)... the old hardware does not impact server performance. It may impact how much can be done client side, but clients do not affect server memory. The biggest limiting factor with the game is Unreal Engine 4 and its memory constraints. The engine is a decade old now, and showing its age.

  • To expand on "old hardware"
The Xbox 1 has higher specs than the PC min specs. Still.
You'd be cutting out a bunch of PC/Steam folks.

SoT 2024 edition wasn't a huge change. It was basically a title change. The big changes happen with the seasons. I doubt they're changing it to SoT 2025. They should drop the year off entirely.

  • Quick question:

My crew votes to fight you. Your crew declines, yet you have treasure on board. What's to stop us from boarding you and taking it?

You also have to understand that there needs to be a risk vs. reward. Doing FotD on Safer Seas a million times, only devalues it if other crews aren't able to challenge you for it (and not sure how it would work if we voted for pvp, your crew didn't, so we'll just walk off the fort with all your treasure and you can't stop us. How would that be fair for you and your crew?). Also, nothing is stopping players from experiencing certain easter eggs in the game.

I think within lore reapers and athenas are rivals hence why i said about athenas, plus whenever ive said about athenas being in safer seas i always seem to get high seas people say "but theres not much risk in safer" (which tbh rare could easily make it so when certain treasure is onboard or your doing certain quests it increases spawn rates or difficulty of things like random skelle ships and krakens/meg as a side i dont think ive seen a kraken)

and I also assume UE5 wouldn't work on last gen, either way it does seem that last gen could be a limiting factor as they might not be able to do as much (cause UE4) i guess the only real problem is do they keep adding to UE4 SOT or do they work on porting it to UE5 ditching last gen but improving performance for everyone

what was the point in having SOT 2024 and 2023 edition then if its pretty much just a number change, especially when i could buy an xbox 1 and an original copy of sot and it still work today

for the treasure thing I haven't figured that part out YET (i don't know if it can be figured out) for the risk v reward thing I already stated it in a different reply but ill expand on it a bit here, have it so certain treasures and the amount of treasure increases the amount of NPCs that spawn around you to try to take you out, maybe even have it where low treasure only spawns sloops, medium treasure brig, high treasure gallion (swap the last two if i got the size order the wrong way round) even having it where with certain treasures the AI is smarter so not just plugging holes but actually bailing water out, (possibly only the high level ones) again same with the monsters that spawn in the sea increasing in chance and possibly difficulty.

with the easter egg thing there is the magic tree (i forget official name for it) which requires 8 people to activate by standing on 8 spots with different instruments playing a specific shanty, which currently is impossible for pure safer seas players to witness first hand

Your assumption is incorrect, as UE5 works on almost all platforms, including Xbox One. Which makes sense, as Fortnite was updated to UE5.

The major hurdle for Sea of Thieves going to UE5 is that it uses a customised version of UE4 and a lot of the features would need equivalents on UE5 to work.

  • @quickhakker the game already does that. When on high seas, my crew always delivers everything right away. We rarely encounter any random spawn threats on the seas as a result. On safer seas, we'll stack everything except explosives. We turn in bombs only and then deliver everything else at the end of the play session and we get multiple threats at once, will be mid ghost fleet battle, and have a meg and a skeli ship pop up during the battle. It gets pretty chaotic. This gives us the chance for more loot, but can get screwed by a bad combo of enemies spawning at once, forcing us to flee the ghost fleet to deal with the spawned enemies.

As for Athenas stuff, sure they added reapers a couple years in to be the rivals of Athenas faction, but the point was Athenas from the beginning was PvE focused. Sure you can now turn in a reapers emissary flag to them, but they don't take any of the other pvp gained items.

Reapers are primarily pvp focused but you are allowed to raise your emissary by farming your own goods, and is the reason I separate them from athenas. It's the focus they have in gameplay.

  • @quickhakker having recently played on my old Xbox One (I bought it the day it released) SoT Xbox1 support needs to be shut down, it barely runs SoT while absolutely overheating the Xbox until it turns into a plasmatic being on my desk. By this point in the Xbox 360's life span, it had been shut down for years on all non-native games.

At this point, its only a matter of time until they take it offline, so just wait, it'll happen (hopefully)

  • Considering Microsoft owns Rare, I don't think the Xbox One will be removed.
Also, it has no bearing on server stability.

so what your saying is even on safer seas there is a high risk high reward situation going on so saying "risk vs reward" as to why certain things are locked in high seas is pointless?

If you read carefully, they said they could leave the Ghost Fleet to fight the possible other PvE encounters, thus lowering the risk.
