What is safer seas?

  • This is a long overdue topic from me IMHO and I would really love to see as much Rare replies as possible (also if they do reply feel free to send it to the sea of thieves subreddit) what is safer seas today? its a very simple question with a very simple answer, you get the opinions from people who play the game and if we get lucky and a Rare member of staff pops up we get to know what it is. I see a lot of people (mainly the PvP sweats on the reddit) claim that "safer seas is just an extended tutorial" which realistically if it was it would set you up to get to level 15 in all guilds and have you have 250k or you get a "free sloop" ticket for high seas, nothing past the level 15 progression would be there. People have also said its only for doing tall tails, which is a better answer than "extended tutorial" however you can still do nearly everything else the game has to offer, I say nearly cause the level lock out at 25 (formerly 40)

This is what I see safer seas as, PvE, they took high seas and just removed the PvE stuff, which as casualties they also got rid of some things that don't make sense to have it removed excluding "well theres no need for it seeing as you arent against players"

  • It's a lower risk lower reward way to play SoT.

People can make it whatever they wanna make it, within the design.

Same as high seas and same as Reaper play etc. In a sandbox, it is what people turn it into.

For safer seas that will often be a more peaceful way of playing. That can be temporary or more permanent.

The rest is kinda just spin or extra optimism that people create.

  • @quickhakker how is this a long overdue topic, the Rare team have talked about this and explained what safer seas is for:

The game design and intent for Sea of Thieves is a shared world adventure, and it always will be. Those who wish to play in the confines of Safer Seas will always have the option but we will not bring the rewards and activities in line with those of High Seas when many of the restrictions are in place due to the risk vs reward factor that is inherent in Sea of Thieves - removing any risk means rewards must be balanced accordingly.

Safer Seas will act not only as a safe space for our Tall Tale players but also for families with children who just want to pirate, for people who want to play the game but learn the ropes and it will organically feed into Adventure mode, keeping the player pool there healthy and upskilled as they've learned the mechanics.

This is not only useful for new players but also families and players with accessibility needs - the whole game suddenly becomes available in a way it hasn't before, letting them naturally progress to High Seas and become a Pirate Legend. SoT has grown a huge amount in 5 years and it can be fairly overwhelming.

The borders put in Safer Seas mean that to experience the full depth and breadth of the game you will have to hit the high seas BUT if you're playing with your family you don't have to, you can just enjoy the game and have fun as a family.

its long overdue from my perspective of things, if you could do me a favour and make a post in the subreddit with that quote to remind people what rares vision of safer seas is cause they seem to think its an extended tutorial exclusively and if you only have 2 hours a week free you shouldnt be playing sea of thieves cause you dont have time to get good

  • @quickhakker i dont do reddit you can wuote it just as well, they have also talked about it in videos and more so.

  • what is safer seas today? its a very simple question with a very simple answer

Same as yesterday. Advance or extra tutorial after maiden voyage. For friends and or mostly families with little ones to sail the seas. Learn about the islands, finish the first set of tall tales and just grab hold what to know about the game.

    That it.

reason i said today is cause i know they changed sea of thieves at least once since its inception, i disagree on anything tutorial related

yeah i cant post it cause they banned me cause someone deliberatly misinterpreted what i meant when i said "here" when people were talking about safer seas being "extended tutorial" and that he couldnt wrap his head around the fact that i wasnt forcing people to have a specific view

You can disagree, but after all you are the one asking for official Rare replies.
I get the feeling you ignored the quote posted by @CallMeBackdrafT , but thats literally coming from Rare staff.

"Learning the ropes", "Learning mechanics", "Progressing to High seas".

They never shied away from saying that people can decide to remain in safer seas, but in the end it's a jumping platform to high seas and the rewards and extra features are obtained accordingly to the level of risk chosen, as also explained in the last paragraph.

Even explained in the Nov 12 vid explaining changes to safer seas:

We want new players to feel the full impact of their adventures and the rewards they bring, before encouraging them on to High Seas so they can enjoy the added benefits of Emissary play, Community Weekends and more.

The Rare Employee tag below their name on each forum post ? As for the video, it's from their channel.

  • @quickhakker I mean @CallMeBackdrafT himself is not Rare employee but the quote he posted was coming from them (A well known quote that gets posted by mods in most safer seas threads, that people seems to always ignore for some reason). I posted a screenshot with the quote from the source.
