Sea of Thieves keeps crashing on my PC with no error code.

  • For some reason my game keeps crashing on PC with no error code. The game just freezes for a few seconds then the entire window just closes. It's never consistent so I can't repeat it. Sometimes I might be playing for 5 minutes before it crashes, and other times I might be playing for an hour before a crash. It has happened during PvP as well as PvE. I've tried updating all of my drivers and re-installing the game. I don't know how to pinpoint this issue. Any help of advice is appreciated. My basic computer stats are:
    CPU: i7-4790 (3.6 GHz)
    Graphics Card: Nvidia GTX 970
    RAM: 16Gigs
    Windows: 10

  • I'm having the exact same issue. I can't find too much online about it either. Their support isn't responding to me either so I don't know what to do. It would be nice if it could at least give an error message when it crashed haha.

  • Same exact thing happens to me.

I've played in 3 betas and several hours on the full game.
Never had a single crash but after this huge update, I've crashed 5 times in 4 hours tonight.

No messages. Just a complete freeze and crash

  • Same thing happened to me as well. Tried reinstalling all drivers as well as the game but it just crashes randomly after a short freeze and worst of all is that all my loot goes with it too

game would run better if it wasn't locked to defective Microsoft windows 10 creators updates. I heard this is dx11? so why not window's vista + support or at least 7+ if it was direct x 12 the least they could do is support windows 10 not only the creators updates i remember going to windows store on 1607 anniversary update and it saying it was not compatible with this build so I had to get creators updates
i havent achieved anything in game because it crashes every mila second or minute i do not think it is possible for this game to last 5 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 or 60 minutes an hour before crashing it self the only solace we have was that there was a free trial for those that didn't jump in head first?

  • @wheelbite you have a family account?
they discrimine the people have this account with constanly crashes without error and they don't supported you and don't say nothing of this.
We are f****d why they dont want family accounts?

I have the same problem and many days saying to supporters and they don't do nothing, we lose money, diversion and time ...

  • I've had the same problem mine always happens if I go to cannon cove

  • @medusotriocular I was crashing when I shared with my brother, then I bought the game on my own account, didn't crash for a day, today it's crashing again. Pretty c****y, considering I lose all the stuff I have on me with every crash.

  • Same thing here

  • I was having the same trouble during Beta.

Unfortunately Console Developers don't really take into consideration the many and varied abilities and access changes people can make to their PCs over time. It was difficult to find this info in the PC Installation Support ( which really should be front and centre as part of the PC Installation Info ).

I've 'trimmed the fat' on programs running unecessarily in the background over the years. If I don't directly use it, I disable it.

I solved my problems with 4 changes ( or checks to your system ):

    FIRST:

    1. Click your Windowss button or hit Win + R
    2. Click the little cog 2nd from the bottom on the black bar ( Settings )
    3. Got to Privacy settings, then Background Apps
    4. Ensure that XBox App and Sea of Thieves is switched to On. ( My XBox App was off )

    SECOND:
Also, if you Microsoft Store app is not 'ON' by default, you will not be aware of game updates. While the game will run to the main menu, you will never join multiplayer games as your game 'version' will not match the rest of the community. So turn you Microsoft Store On until such time as the game is running for you. Once up and running, I have turned the 'Background App' for this back to 'OFF'.

THIRD: Now with Microsoft Store open, ensure you have the XBox Identity Provider APP in you list of Microsoft Store apps, and that it is running and up to date ( I have an authenticator so this is required for me, not sure if it also provides cross platform ( PC to Xbox ) syncronisation so you can play online with your one account?

    FOURTH:

    1. Click the search button next to the Win Start button
    2. Type in 'msconfig' and hit enter
    3. This brings you to the PC System Configuration. Click Services. ( Ensure all Xbox related check boxes are filled whether they are running or not.

Perusing to your Task Manager ( as above but type "Task manager and go to Services )should now show that several Xbox services are now working in the background such as:
    XblAuthManager
    XboxGipSvc
    XboxNetApiSvc

Some folks have also suggested that installing to your root drive (C:) solves issue you may incur installing to secondary or external hard drives.

Hope this helps and Good Luck.

  • @ghoullees Going to give this a shot tonight, has anyone else had any luck using these steps? And ghoullees were your crashes happening when playing with somebody in the same household on the same network? Or sharing the game?

  • @ghoullees I have no idea if this would work for me for the problems I've experienced so far but you get an upvote for actually providing valuable feedback and you're not being paid to even provide support.

  • I already gave up playing the game, as well as being able to play for just a few minutes because of this error of locking everything and leaving the game to the desktop, when you can finally play for an hour (extremely rare this happens) many times when you find the bau and then when you are missing a few seconds to sell it, the game falls and you lose everything, this will make a lot of people lose the desire to play the game which will end up with the number of players very fast.

  • I've played for about 4-6 hours so far, and have several crashes. No error message, the game just drops out. So everything I am in the middle of is now gone. All quests ruined. Fix this or give me a damn refund for your defective game.

  • I'm having this issue as well except (You didn't state this) my entire PC actually crashes and reboots. I checked the Event Viewer and it's always a Kernel Power error. Event ID 41.

i've done some digging on this and it can be driver related, hardware related, all kinds of things. funny thing is IT ONLY HAPPENS IN SEA OF THIEVES.

I've literally maxed out GTA 5 on my rig and played for 4 hours and had no issues, but SoT is like.. log in, hop on ship, start sailing about 30 seconds, BOOM. total system crash.

at this point I refuse to believe it's hardware related. what is so extremely impressive about Sea of Thieves graphics that can crash a pretty high end system while other much more resource hungry games sail on it?

I hope this addressed, I can always play it on xbox one, but the point of play anywhere is, you know... playing anywhere.

  • The game crash from time to time... just played 2 hours with random galleon crew, did alot of voyages... then game crashed and was unable to join back!!!!
Last time it happened with skull raid... its getting annoying and frustrating.

    CPU: i7-7600K
    RAM: 32GB
GPU: RX Vega 64 (latest driver: 18.3.4)

    Game settings: Everything common

  • Arrgh, I've had the same issue. I updated my drivers (twice), then reinstalled the game. I've not had any issues since the reinstall.

  • Having the same issues, being at end of September 2018.

Good enough PC to play it.
    Good Internet connection.
    No error or crash dump.

    Just a Sudden game closing.

  • @byjokese0

    +1

My game it's just crashing but with no error, this happened after the patch update.

  • So, something to look at believe it or not, is your power supply. People often buy a new graphic cards not really knowing if their PC can power it. You put it in, and everything seems to work fine. High end Games now-a-days really make the Graphic cards rev up thus pulling more power. People often do the basic math and add up everything and think they are fine. Here is the thing most people don't know. IF your power supply says 800 watts it may not actually be 800 watts but rather 80% of that which is around 640 watts which you can easily reach with all the stuff PC's have to power. Power supplies have ratings. Here is a nice Wiki article explaining (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/80_Plus) In short make sure you have enough power to keep that high end graphics card happy!

  • This has been happening to me all day today. Basically EVERY time I tab out to Google something, or look at discord. Really wish they would fix this.
