Pay to win pistols.

  • @rattlyfob That's kinda what iron sights do?

  • @betsill Just wondering... if those pictures of the pistols are yours? If so, during pvp combat have you ever used the ferryman or mercenary pistol and felt like it was easier to aim/shoot than the in-game pistols? Just really curious

  • @bbbattlebunny Not mine. I got the pics online. I saw a pick of the merc pistol ADS and was like "wow there's actually a pistol with sights" and set out to buy it. I went to an outpost and wasn't there so I looked up where to find it and found out I can't get it.

  • @betsill
Even if this would be an issue, there is the admiral pistol for everybody to use.
It has a hexagonal shape, it would actually be better if you really want an ironsight than your examples that completely block your view.

  • @betsill Who'da thunk that someone would accuse a game with four weapon types, no progression and a kiddie pools worth of content of being "pay to win".

    Outrage culture is real.

  • I have the Ebon pistol and thought I had an unfair advantage.

The truth is it's a negligible advantage at best. Things like an iron sight on your weapon will just illustrate how much of a casual shooter SoT really is.

Blunderbuss and musket are still better in certain situations.

Effectiveness in pvp is debatable. If you think you need this to improve your game, your still going to the Ferry.

  • Its just cosmetic period. I have all three and none shoot any different than the regular pistol. If you felt its an "unfair advantage" then go buy the controller or next time jump on mixer when they have the give away for items.

  • I can't speak for the mercenary or ferryman pistols, but I do have the ebon pistol. I rarely use it, but in the brief time I did, it did FEEL easier to use; the default almost felt just as easy too due to having a clear sightline (just aim slightly above the barrel - easy!). In contrast, I also have, and predominantly use, the sovereign pistol - it FEELS much harder to use; it's rounded-tipped barrel actually covers what you should be aiming at, and I miss with it frequently, especially at longer distances.

Whether there's actually an advantage or not, though, I can't really say...

  • Nah, the real OP pistol is the ceremonial admiral. It sits lower on the screen than other guns I've tried, giving me a clear view of the centre of the screen which I've marked with a small piece of electrical tape. Admittedly I did pay for the tape, but not for this purpose so that doesn't count.

  • @el-dunco I have the ferryman. It doasnt.

  • I do love the Ebon pistol but the ferrymans spike deal kinda blocks vision more than helps when at close to mid range.

I don't see why a few future pistols cant have a sight though, why not. Ill take as many options as I can get. Hope you get one you like soon.

I know in video they said we should get some new weapon skins in next event. Hope one is a pistol with a sight for you.

  • This Topic Starters tsiZ dayZ ... my gush...
You make me laugh :D @BETSILL
If its not troll post then man, i feels bad for you.
You can paint "point" on your monitor and call it CHEATS then :D

  • @betsill I have the Ebon one and I can assure you that shooting with that thing is a complete pain. The iron sight is ugly as hell and it's an hindrance, it actually blocks your line of fire.
In fact, I've bought another gun (without IS) and I'm using that one, it's 100% better.
Ofc, you can make everything work, but it's easier to use the ones without IS.
This isn't CoD or CS, iron sights don't give you any advantage here.
But you're free to keep complaining about nothing, if you want.

Btw, the all "Rare pretends that everyone is on the same playing field and that's why they won't add character progression in the form of equipment/mods" it's always been flawed from the start. If I have more hours put in this game than you, I'll always have an advantage over you and we won't be on the same playing field. So don't bring this thing up.
This applies to almost every game, not just SoT.

  • Guess what? You can grab a marker pen and put a dot in the middle of the screen and you'll have another aid to shoot acurately even from the hip!

Oh and PC players can just put that dot in trough software, there's video drivers that include this feature, neat huh?

It's a cosmetic, I know nothing about real guns I just know it's not going to help you secure kills in game. It actually doesnt matter where you hit a character, we're all the same pill people with no distinct hit boxes.

  • the only thing that annoys me A LOT about that is nice weapon skins are not to buy ingame... be a pirate legend, no screw it u have to buy a controller!

  • The easy fix would be to add a pistol skin to the shops with this barrel set-up. So, Rare, please add a rusty bilge-rat pistol to the weapon stores that has a little sight-nub like the guns from external promotions?

  • For new players these pistols could be easier to learn, yes.
But you quickly get a feel for them and don't need the ironsight.
I use the flintlock pistol normally, but when i change the weapon loadout in a hectic fight it happens that i grab the standard pistol instead.
It doesn't feel different to me.

  • The real question is who the heck uses a pistol for PVP? It’s Blunderbust or bust!!!!

  • Though I don't see it as a big deal I gotta admit seeing people saying ironsights offer no advantage is just plain silly and I think the OP has explained well enough why that is so I'll not beat the deadhorse.

I just don't get these growing overly combatitive responses to negative criticism, it's like some have come to believe the game is designed for them specifically. In any case there's no harm in making a gun with ironsights available to the general playerbase and it's absurd to argue for less content.

  • Huh, another crossplat thread. just this time also whining about skins.

    Weird.

Does that mean the black dog pack give an unfair advantage at night?

or the blu seadog set give an unfair advantage when swimming?

  • @glannigan that's all personal preference to be honest. I prefer the pistol myself as the blunder has short range. I've learnt to keep my distance for this very reason and have been quite successful over player with blunders lol. Can't go wrong with the double shot method though

  • @rattlyfob said in Pay to win pistols.:

@betsill said in Pay to win pistols.:

This is unacceptable. I don't mind(I actually prefer) if there are ways to upgrade/sidegrade players ability to fight based on progression, but making it paid or timed exclusive content and not available to the average player is very much... bad...

For those who don't know what i'm talking about(I just found out about it today) there are exactly 3 pistols in the game with iron sights. ALL of them are exclusive content that you can't get by playing the game. The "Ebon flintlock Pistol", "Ferryman Pistol", and "Mercenary Pistol".
As everyone knows the in-game pistols don't have sights. You have to estimate the center of the pistol in order to hit your target(not a hard thing to do, but it is obviously less accurate than a proper sight).
Here is the standard sight we all know.
    alt text
and here are the mercenary and ferryman pistols(ebon is same as mercenary)

Rare pretends that everyone is on the same playing field(which obviously isn't true, or xbox players wouldn't have to fight PC players) and that's why they won't add character progression in the form of equipment/mods. I would personally would prefer being able to buy mods and different weapons/equipment to give me some sort of use for my now useless gold. However, if they are gonna allow things like iron sights they MUST be consistent and let everyone get them.

I dunno... looks like it just blocks your sight

Yeah there could be a sand banana behind that nub and now you can't see it!

  • I wonder when those that don't have the Launch Crew Eye of Reach will start a thread about it being unfair that we have a night vision scope..

  • @glannigan
    Pistol/Sword for skelly grinds
    Blunder/Sword for ship defense
    EoR/Blunder for ship chases
Blunder/Pistol for making others angry :D

  • @betsill most of the pistols you can buy with in game gold have an easily discernable line going straight down the middle to help with aiming. The starter pistol doesn't have this, but the other pistols I have bought do.

Thank you, I will lol Iron sights work exactly the same in this game as any other FPS.

Btw, the all "Rare pretends that everyone is on the same playing field and that's why they won't add character progression in the form of equipment/mods" it's always been flawed from the start. Sorry, but this is complete nonsense. Unless you are one of those people who try to say that mouse and keyboard isn't better than a controller. Cause it 100% is.

  • @daddymacdown Some of them help and are better than starter, but none of them are as clean functional as the merc/ferry pistols.

  • @onyx-wartooth Huh, another non sequitur. Whining and strawmaning people who have different opinions than them.
    Weird.

  • Pay to win is certainly the incorrect term, as the most common of the two pistols was given away for free, not once but twice. The advantage it provides is negligible at best. I honestly find it a hindrance more than anything, but I really dig the look of the ferryman and it matches some of my cosmetic choices, so I stick with it.

Is it lame that cosmetics exist that you cannot obtain within the game? Sure, I suppose, but if we're complaining about it, let's complain about all of them. These give no advantage, the view of "well these iron sights are cleaner than the one I can purchase" is incredibly subjective and I generally see people prefer the one you CAN buy in game as the superior one. But the claims of Pay to Win are nothing short of absurd.

  • @prodigy-burns Thank you! Finding people that don't think criticizing this game is equivalent to blasphemy on the forums is incredibly hard. I'm honestly starting to wonder if they are over hostile because they have an irrational attachment to the current state of this game, or the are just trying to start flame wars to get these kinds of posts shut down by mods.

  • @glannigan I use both. It's the only thing that works for me personally. Not having a proper ranged option is a huge disadvantage in PVP IMO.

  • @betsill i mean might appear to be a sight but in the end its really comes down to skill anyway

  • @sirliborius Totaly fine if you think that, but for me as a shooter I really find a lot of value in having some form of sights on my guns.

  • While I understand the gripe wholeheartedly, they should def add some other pistols with the iron sights. I will say I have both these pistols & it’s not that big of a deal. Reason being by the time you look down your sights, I would of already shot you. I’ve played this way for over 10yrs works great for me!!! I’ll share with y’all in case it may help someone here too. I place a very small red rhinestone sticker in the center of my screen. This way I have a marker without aiming down sights & if you do use scope or iron sights it’s like having a ruby in the center of your crosshairs. I run around with a sniper & wield it like it’s a blunderbuss no scoping anything within 12 foot of me. Do as you will but trust me when I say if you use ads aiming while in a close quarters fight with me it most likely isn’t gonna work out for you.
