  • @maciejpl84 I agree I think they should add a raid mission for the kraken for a weekly event!

  • Definitely needs something more. I would suggest a head of some sort that comes up after a few tentacles die, and would require some extra finesse to take down. Perhaps it only takes damage from a certain side, such that the crew has to maneuver around it.

As for rewards, I think the reward should be a sort of temporary "buff" to the ship after successfully taking down any monster. Like the Kraken would give a the ship increased vision until it sank. The Megalodon might give a speed boost. This would be just enough incentive for crews to consider taking down a beastie instead of just running away.

    1. No, the kraken should not take maneouvering to take down, because you're stuck dead in the water once it spawns. You'd have to swim to see any other side.
    2. No, buffs are not a good idea. How about a kraken skull you sell to the order for cash and standing?

As for the rest I totally, wholeheartedly agree.

I could be mistaken but I think your ship is only slowed during the encounter, unless a tentacle grips the ship. Usually, my crew just fights off the tentacles until we get through the dark water patch, leaving a few up behind us.

  • I'm sorry, read the title of your topic and now a vision of pirates reparing tentacle-holes with planks is stuck in my head hahahaha

  • @zardamn
Indeed you are correct, but the "slow down" you mentioned is practically indistinguishable from "dead in the water". A dead sea turtle can catch up with you with no problems at all. The area of a kraken is actually maybe five lengths of a galleon in diameter and it takes a couple of minutes to get to the edge. So no maneouvering.

But, as I mentioned, I wholeheartedly agree, that the Kraken should be first and foremost more challenging and then more interesting. Tentacles ain't doing the job for us. Maybe because we were born in the wrong place, who knows. Give the kraken some curves, make it really dangerous.

  • I think it would make it a little more interesting if when the Kraken wraps a tentacle around the ship if you don't hack it off in time it lifts your ship into the air. Could tilt it to the side so you risk falling off and then slams the ship back into the water causing some massive damage.

Also, give the Kraken a mouth.

This is the exactly why I think a basic maneuver mechanic would shine. While the crew is fending off tentacles:

Helmsman: "Oi boys, fight or run?!?"
    Crew: "Fight!"

Helmsman makes a course correction to slowly intercept the front of the Kraken head and joins the fight. Still must deal with the main mechanic in the encounter, the tentacles, but with the added option to fight towards a more satisfying end.

This is actually a great idea. Run and get nothing or risk it all, fight and get the goodies. Sounds good.

    PUGS more like:

    Helmsman: "Kraken, fight or run?"
    Crew A: logged off
    Crew B: logged off
    Helmsman: "Fight?"
Crew C: "I guess, it's only the 2 of us."
    Helmsman: "!#?% it!"
    Helmsman: logged off
    Crew C: "..."

  • The Kraken is alright as it is. It never really poses a threat to anyone and I’ve never been close to sinking whilst fighting one but it is a unique piece of gameplay. The only problem with it currently is it’s lack of purpose. If you got something from killing it might actually be worth fighting. The same goes for the Megalodon when it becomes an anomaly. Some Athena rep and/or some gold might keep people from sailing out of the dark waters.
