Pirate Hideout

  • Hi everyone!
I think we have all had this idea before, but I think it would be really cool if we could have our own private hideout with our own home and shops and things like that. This is my idea on a possible way of implementing it:

The Dark Brethren have been quiet for a long time, and I think it would be cool if we got a few tall tales hunting them down.
I was thinking they'd follow the structure of

    1. Figure out their evil plan
    2. Locate where they are
    3. defeat them.

My idea is they are using an Island in the sea of the damned as their hideout. I would be a relatively large island with a dock, a few buildings and a large manor in the center. Upon completing the final tall tale, you are presented with ownership of the island.

    Functions:
The majority of structures on the island would be damaged given the battle that went on to take it from the Brethren, so it could be used as a gold dump to repair and refurbish structures. (eg: 250,000 gold in order to repair the dock and make it useable)
The manor could be rebuild and redecorated using new/existing decorations from the ships, and could have exclusive themes for the manor itself.
Acts as a headquarters for your pirate and their guild.

The manor itself would be the main appeal, as it would have a kitchen, bedrooms, bar, office, and a hidden vault and armory. I think it would be cool if the vaults contents changed based on the amount of gold your pirate has, such as a few coins for a small amount, or a number of jewels and chests if the have a higher amount.

I get this isn't anything revolutionary, but I think it would be fun and cool to have your own little pirate paradise outside of the main world.

As always, criticism and takes would be appreciated :)

  • @theredhead5271 I personally suggested a guild hideout for friends if anything. This seems like a great idea but the privacy may be a downside. People then might just sit in hideouts and not do anything. I agree we need a gathering spot though other than outposts for crews

Is this for guild members/friends where all can get ships on the same server i.e. an alliance server? If not, I don't understand what the sole purpose would be for/to do? I normally log on with friends and we make the decision as to what flag to raise, and then go out and earn gold/rep. If we had a hideout, do we just go there and stand around admiring the scenery or....?

In WoW, players also kept saying they wanted their own "player housing" as they felt it would be neat to have. So, the devs created the garrisons that each individual player owned, where they had to clean up, decorate, design, and place whatever they wanted. They could also invite friends/guild members, etc. to their garrisons and play fun little mini-games (complete with achievements and such). It was a complete and total flop, as WoW made MMO history with the most unsubs in 1 quarter, and 3 million players gone (1 million per month). Apparantly what many thought would be cool and neat, ended in catastrophe and today, no one uses it anymore since there's no point. The game is out there, not inside a private garrison to hang around and do nothing.

  • @europa4033 My idea was this was just a place outside of the main world that your friends can hang around with. I have a few friends who like the game, but we can't all play at the same time due to ships limited to a 4 person crew, which sucks as most of the time we just like sitting on and island and chill. It isn't intended as an alliance server, as it would be outside the main game.
Think about it like PoTC or the Monkey Island tall tales, set outside the main game. There would not be any loot, it would just be a place to vibe.

But I do see where you are coming from though with WoW, i just thought it would be cool to have a place where you can mess around with more than 3 friends was all.

  • Personally I’ve never liked the “I would like my own house” suggestion in games like SoT. To be quite frank, your ship is your home. You live out at sea and explore there, you don’t need a static instanced area where you stash all your belongings when your ship does that for you, AND it has the benefit of being mobile and you can invite players on board to sail with.

I know some people see the “lack of a house” as an issue, but Rare solved that problem by providing you with a floating house that sails between islands in the first place! ;)

The thing is, what you're describing is going to probably take up a separate server for that. Arena was closed down due to 2% of a player's time being spent there, so they shut that server down to save money, time, and resources spent on it. Having a separate server where players just hang out, do nothing and "chill", could be done in a discord call.

  • Totally agree with this post they needs to be an hideout for players to meet other players and form crews.

  • I was against this idea mostly because of the server limitations and increasing the amount of servers that are on just for a social hub seems like a terrible idea but...
As people pointed out the portal tall tales don't happen on the same server as regular adventure mode if that was true portal hopping wouldn't be a thing.
I have never interacted with my guild owner outside of the invitation to the guild mostly because they immediately goes to play duo sloop with his friend and I usually do solo sloop and he made me a guild leader.
If instead of sailing for the guild through a menu we did it through a social hub we might have done some brig or galleon games instead of each of us being in their own ship.

    Imagine this:

    • Instead of choosing your ship from the menu you get sent to the guild hideout.
    • In the guild hideout you have a shipwright that will let you summon or dismiss your ship and after you summon the ship you're made captain.
    • Everyone else can vote to join the ship depending on vacancies.
    • The ready option would be to sail the ship through a portal like the ones in the pirate life tall tales.
    • And instead of waking up in the tavern you would be jumping out of a portal near the outpost.

As a reminder the limit of players in a guild is the same as 6 galleons which is an incredible coincidence with the expected goal of a server limit.

My opinion pirate hideout isn't worth it, but guild hideout and now we're cooking.

Whatever costs to the increased server usage could be dealt with specialized hideout ambiance skins and more trinkets and each increase in distinction could also lead to unlocking more rooms creating a bigger emphasis on trying to belong to a more active guild while giving more places to put trinkets.

  • @europa4033 Nah, just an area to meet up before going in, NOT ALLIANCE SERVER but an area to hang where no money could be made

  • @h0b0jo0e said in Pirate Hideout:

@europa4033 Nah, just an area to meet up before going in, NOT ALLIANCE SERVER but an area to hang where no money could be made

If the purpose of it is to find other players doing like-minded things, how is it different than the SoT community discord, aside from the developers not having to spend time, money, resources developing a "meet up place" where players stand around and not earn anything?

  • @europa4033 That is not the purpose of a player hideout. It's not to find players and plus people might want a place to hang other than over the phone in discord. A hideout would be a place to hang out and share stories, like in a tavern. This idea is like the pirate lord's dream for SOT: wants a tavern for pirates to share their stories in. Making 1 for each player may be a strech, but for guilds, that is 24 people in a space outside the servers, just like tall tales in sea of the dammed. This would 100% IMPROVE the whole guild experience. Arguing that this is a way for alliance servers, just use lfg, or just hang on discord is just so stupid because Rare wants us to share storries and this would be a way to do this in game! We should be able to share stories without having to use outside resources ourselves. This would accomplish THEIR VISON for the game and I just do not see how tf it is not a good idea.

  • @astralenigma This is like the guild hideout I suggested

  • A private instance you start your journey in would solve the problem of stationary ships at outposts doing nothing for long periods of time on almost every server.
As a guild hideout it would also be a social hub and place to see all pretty guild ships ready to set sail on, docked side by side.

  • If they do Guild Hideouts, they have to go big or go home. It would have to be instanced and it should be accessible from any Outpost. So, they could make a doorway that opens when you play a certain shanty and that's how you access open your guild hideout or you can enter from the main menu.
My idea for a Guild Hideout would be having:
Ability to select a hideout island along with a different region themed biome. So, I could select Devil's Roar, Shores of Plenty, etc.
3 Different tiers of a Hideout. First is a few wooden buildings like an outpost. Second tier is a sea fort structure on the island, and last is literally a mini Port Merrick guild hideout.
Sea forts have different looks, which should carry over to all 3 tiers of hideouts, so you could have an overgrown look, or a haunted looking hideout with bats and cages. Basically no matter the tier, it should have an overall customizable theme/look depending on the guild. Not just one plain jane theme. So, if I wanted my mini Port Merrick to have a Christmas themed look to it, my guild could purchase that and change it. Guilds can customize the "overall" theme of their island at any time.
Of course, trinkets, pictures, etc will all be customizable inside buildings.
2nd tier sea fort hideouts will look basically just like a sea fort with a few modifications. 1st and 3rd tier hideouts will have a tavern building, a treasury, sleeping quarters, and maybe a few other buildings, and a shipwright.
The hideout instance could not only include the main Island, but also a TDM island fort and a section for naval combat. So, maybe 4 grid squares can be open sea for naval and an island is in the middle for TDM. If a ship sinks, it just respawns back at the hideout island dock. Having this available in our own guild instance would be invaluable for practicing, teaching new players, and doing fun PVP guild events.
Anyone on the main hideout island and not within the 4 grids dedicated to PVP will not be able to use their weapons or throwables. This helps prevent griefing.
Other activities that guilds can do in the hideout include fishing (random fish, but you can't sell them anywhere you can only use them inside the hideout when doing PVP, obstacle course, etc.), liar's dice, obstacle course, and just looking at all the cool trinkets and stuff on the walls that the guild can customize. Feel free to add ideas below.

Guilds should also be able to invite anyone inside their hideout, even if they're not in the guild. Making a quick invite option or guild browser would be a cool option so that Guild Owners could potentially "host" their hideout to a public audience. Kind of like open vs closed crew. The Guild Owner could close the guild to guild members at any time though and non-guild members can be kicked from the instance. This would ensure that if a streamer or guild owner was hosting an event, they could at least have a degree of control of who is in the instance at any given moment.

Because you're suggesting they use money, time, and resources to develop a space with the intent being to....tell stories, 24 people at that, all telling stories. Not sure if you know this or not, but my guild has their own discord, and we tell stories by clipping hilarious clips and videos and post them there, so everyone can watch what happened and laugh at it. But yeah, let's log in the game to a special place developed to do nothing, not play it by any means, and stand around telling stories. I'm sure people begging Rare to please fix their game would love to see resources invested in this.

  • @europa4033 But let's say the world was perfect and there were no issues with SOT. Would you want this yes or no?

And I'm the leader of the 5th best guild in SOT and discord doesn't do story sharing any justice (In my experience)
