Merfruit Buff Proposal

  • It's still early, there are 100 other higher priorities, but I'm writing this down before I forget it.
The merfruit, specifically the cooked merfruit offers a very niche buff. I think other buffs could be applied alongside the mermaid spawn prevention to make it less niche while keeping in theme with its aquatic nature.
In total, I propose that the fruit offer 3 buffs simultaneously (I know, that sounds crazy broken, hear me out), all with the same duration to keep things easy to track.
First, it keeps its current mermaid begone buff as it is.
Second, it would allow the pirate to breathe underwater for the duration. Ship wreck a little too deep underwater, don't want to surface while you're on your way to board, does the sound of your pirate running out of air make you nervous: The solution is here!
Third, this is the big, scary, could break the game if not balanced right buff (but I think it can be done). I propose a swim speed buff, not a big one (under no circumstances should a pirate able to outswim a ship with sails fully down, regardless of wind). I'm leaning between the speed of a shark pursuing a player (probably too fast) and a galleon fully against the wind (matching that speed, not outpacing it.) The speeds mentioned above would be for sprint swimming, any buff to default swimming or swimming while holding treasure, I would leave to Rare's decision.
This would set the fruit as a must have for any business in the water and make the choice between buffs and healing foods a little more difficult.

Anyway, we're only a couple weeks into Season 14, plenty of time for the merfruit to shine as people find new uses for it. It may very well prove perfect as it is. These are just the ramblings of an old pirate.

    Safe Sailing

  • Buff an item that is always somewhat OP if used right.

  • @burnbacon the merfruit is completely useless, a good crew will hear you boarding eitiher way, and a clueless crew will let you board regardless, it is rarely if ever useful, and if you miss a board you are stranded in the sea for like two minutes. It's a nerf in 90% of situations, OP's idea for a buff is ok but I think it would be a lot more simple to just make it spawn a mermaid, which would be actually useful, instead of the opposite...

  • i like the idea of "water breathing" but reckon the swim speed is too much but would like to recommend replacing it with a grace period where ocean ai wont spawn and attack you for the grace period so its just a short time where you don't need to worry about anything else in the seas.

  • The horn works in the water.
    Swimming already has a buff.

Let's not make anymore special power fruits or make the one worse.

  • @thecollaredking to be honest breathing would be nice.
    Nowadays it is usless.

  • @burnbacon sure thing OP as hell, what new scenario you cooked up to back this up?

    Stable SoT experience:)

  • I did have another buff proposal in mind for the merfruit which wouldn't be that big of a buff but would be more in line with it's use.

The timer only runs while you're in the water.

This way you can ambush ships on islands or forts without needing a constant supply of enchanted fruits.

  • I still think mermaid spawns should be time spent in water based and not distance to ship based, and that the merfruit instantly summon a mermaid.

When you tuck on an island, no mermaid to give you away, when you swim to board a ship you have however long it takes to summon the mermaid until it gives you away.

  • @th3-tater I do really like the visual of a pirate eating the merfruit to stealthily swim up to an enemy, only to pull out a horn and, fog horn blast themselves through the water.

But you are correct, the swim speed buff does exist in item form.

  • @amiiipretty I see the summon a mermaid comment a lot in regards to the merfruit, but if it were to do that, I think the fruit should just "imbue you with the power of the merfolk" and take you back to your ship directly. Eat fruit, straight to black screen, then boat. Cut out the middle man, take out the weird scenarios of summoning a mermaid when it shouldn't be possible to do so.
If they added another cooked state to the merfruit it could do both the mermaid-away it does now and the bring back to boat problem that I see a lot of mentioned.
Uncooked- Just a blue & white pomegranate
Undercooked- Takes you to your ship
    Perfectly Cooked- Scares off merfolk
Burnt- Just a black, blue & white pomegranate that's burnt.

  • @thecollaredking even this three staged fruit would be better than what we have. It's pretty much the only feature that was added this season 100% as planned and it seriously is useless

  • Just make 2 fruits. One to hold off the merfolk. One to summon them. Love to hold my breathe longer, with either fruit. That is a wonderful idea. No swim speed buff needed.

  • @thecollaredking This would be a lot of work, I get that you want it to have a more broad use though. So to keep it similar and relevant, why not just make the burnt version summon a mermaid instead of make it go away. No more swimming for hours, it will be used constantly.
