Oreo sails? Region locked?

  • Did I hear right that RARE is doing a thing with Oreo, but just in the European Union?

  • hopefully they end up in the emporium or something so I don't have to figure out how to find a EU oreo dealer

  • Kinda like they did Chips Ahoy for NA only? Haven't heard it. Don't really care. The codes are gonna be printed outside of the package and all get stolen anyways soooooo.......

  • @r3troraccoon Ahoy matey!

You are correct, the promotion is an EU promotion between Xbox and Oreo and there are no plans to change this.

not just the European union, but 22 countries within Europe (the union is something else then the the continent of europe) htey did something like this before with the Chips Ahoy promotion a few years back for NA only

i believe this time (unlike the chips ahoy promotion) this time it does not work with actual printed codes.

Entering the baked-in symbols in the correct sequence can unlock exciting, exclusive Oreo-themed in-game content, such as armor packs and vehicle skins for popular titles like Forza Horizon 5, Sea of Thieves, and Halo Infinite.

it seems to me like you have to enter symbols that are on the actual cookies.

    so purchase required

Well, I never thought I would ever have to get an international cookie smuggler... Yet here are.

It's a little early in the week to go full Nick Cage in National Treasure for some oreos but if that's how the cookie crumbles that's how the cookie crumbles

  • @wolfmanbush

Put the bunny back in the box!

  • @musicmee I would think excluding entire continents would not be good PR for y'all. Especially considering the whole hourglass fiasco and the sheer number of players your intentionally leaving out of one of the best and only non re-skinned sails, hull etc. Sometimes I guess you just gotta shake your head and sigh.

a deal between xbox and oreo isn't something that somehow negatively reflects on Rare or SoT or any of the irrelevant stuff to the deal lol

  • From what I noticed, it seems to be immediately available participate in Germany at this current moment. If you have German friends that have participated and have a spare code, you can get it from them and own the set yourself, regardless of where you are. There is probably another method but I don't think it can be freely discussed or suggested within the forums.

Another thing I've heard about this event is that you might need to use a camera? Apparently it's optional, but the camera necessity suggests that you'll want to purchase these Oreo products physically, though the non-camera method is also valid to work, and also why several people currently own the set.

  • @r3troraccoon Like the Chips Ahoy promo years ago? Was only available for people in NA?

    Some things are limited.

Oh that sounds much cooler. I would like an oreo livery for one of my sillier cars in Forza H5

  • Oreos are so good.

    Double Stuf or bust.

  • This is what happens in my mind when I eat oreos

    It's wonderfill

  • @triheadedmon ah but that was probably exclusive in a way that didn't exclude op, so doesn't count 😅

  • @r3troraccoon think I may have to trial. A vpn lol

  • @callmebackdraft no longer works. it now requires a camera

  • @captain-coel I think it broke long before that, since they seemed to stop sending out emails. Might have run out of keys, and I'm sure if the communities from Forza and Halo got involved it probably drained all their keys in no time.

  • @d3adst1ck that's a shame they aren't sending people codes anymore

  • Technically Europe, not just the union. We'll get it over in the UK also.

With how the codes work there will likely be an abundance. You get one for Steam and one for Xbox, not everyone will use both. Just a matter of finding one that people have decided not to waste.

There are other ways, but I won't discuss them because on a technicality you're cheating the system.

How can they legally get away with that?

Don't they have to have non purchase options available or is that just a North America thing?

  • @personalc0ffee i believe legally that is a North American thing, not knowledgeable on all countries laws though.

Technically purchase isnt required since you are able to brute force it

Then perhaps that is the reason USA was excluded from the promotion.

I don't have full knowledge of the US laws, but i think for the shipset itself that would be allowed, since you are guaranteed to get it, yet since you also have a chance to win other prizes (an Xbox for instance) and that is a lottery so not guaranteed, so there you can't have a purchase be necessary?

But in the EU this is not a problem, it's allowed for what i know (as long as you don't falsely advertise ofcourse).

  • I hate region locked promotions.. as an Australian the only way I can participate is VPN and or have someone in the region source them for me.. this really gets on the nerves.

It is my understanding being American that in the USA it is against the law to hold a contest, sweepstakes, or giveaway where a purchase is necessary for entry.

This is one of the reasons I've been asking for a copy of the official rules that I can actually read because it would classify precisely which this is.

Basically over here in the states we have very strict rules enforced by our FTC in regards to these sorts of things and if Europe and other areas where they are doing this promotion don't; then I can easily see that as the reason USA was not included.

  • @personalc0ffee I only have a link in Portuguese, but see if this helps you any https://stay-playful.oreo.eu/pt/terms-of-use

It’s definitely written according to European regulations and they are different. In the US they would not be allowed to require this “crack the code game mode” to get a code and would have to offer the code without “trickery.” But following this “non trickery” method the code for the cosmetic would be classified as a gift with purchase, so not covered by our lottery laws. The giveaway part, though, is required to have a non-purchase way of entering. Which the European countries do not seem to have a law for either.

    That doesn't work.

Accessing any part of the promotion site just tells me "This country is not participating in this competition."

So they are calling it a competition, which means there is a prize. In USA you can't require a purchase for a prize. So this the most likely the reason.

  • Alot of the players running to get VPN and get the sails make it unfair for the actual players from participating countries since they will most likely buy a box of oreo's and their code will not work because it's already been used up somehow.
So we should just accept it's region locked and move on.

A suggestion for this to be fair for everyone is if they were to have a location where you could sell, trade or auction off items you don't want anymore allowing players the opportunity to get items that were region locked or time limited.
Sorta like Forza Horizon does where you can put up your cars for auction if you don't want them anymore.

There is someone on ebay selling over 40 codes, alone.

They are by far not the only ones.

What they should do is just deactivate the codes after the promotional period is done so that anyone that is sitting on them to sell them, can't.

  • @personalc0ffee Guarantee you most people that get them, will use them once and never display them again just like most other ship cosmetics. Everyone i see mostly use anything related to pirate legends or hard to unlock cosmetics, for intimidation purposes i assume.
