why is third partying HG even possible?

  • I just don't understand how anything positive could come from allowing some random ship to decide who wins. Best case scenario, you team up to sink them, then rest. Worst case, someone spends two hours running in circles because now one wants to fight a four v one.

  • why is third partying HG even possible?

    Because it’s open world?

I just don't understand how anything positive could come from allowing some random ship to decide who wins

Was the third party for you or against you. I bet if it were for you, you wouldn’t be complaining.

Besides all that. Hourglass does not say anywhere it a straight up 1v1. Hourglass is and always been a tool to find pvp
If another ship joins in, that is pvp. You wanted pvp and you got it.

  • @burnbacon when someone third partys 'for me' I try to sink them, and complain that the fight was interrupted.

There are plenty of tools to find pvp. HG is the only way to find an even ish match. It just feels like poor game design when some random ship can roll up, and decide to screw someone over.

You have some.. let's just say interesting takes.

Hourglass was literally made for even PvP matches. They literally made changes so people can't team up against invaders. Third partying is not an intended "feature" just because it's possible, and should've been fixed for a very long time now. The HG matches should be on a different small map as a lot of people already said(except for defenders) and problem solved.

  • They're giving pvp the pve treatment.

You know how you rolled up on that Tall Tale player and sunk them for supplies and to make sure they didn't have any good loot?

3rd party in HG is the same thing. You wanted a fight. SoT has NEVER been about "fair" fights lol.

  • Players didnt wanna spend time looking for ships on the open world who would run or not fight at all. They wanted to find PvP players like themselves. Introducing: HourGlass.

Tool created to find PvP wannabe players without the need to Sail around for hours. You got what you wanted. So what a Third or Fourth Ship appears, that PvP. Something players wanted, they got it. But suddenly, now they just wanna fight players alone....without distractions or players interruptions them... Almost how PvE players just want to do voyages and stuff without PvP players....It a weird cycle.

  • @molnaramy00 i do actually have to strongly disagree here unfortunately. Hourglass isn't designed as a separate mode, it's designed as pvp on demand.

3rd parties are 100% intended and designed around when you consider that the Athena and reaper liars have a map that shoe where you need to go to 3rd party people. It can feel like you got robbed of a win when you're ahead and get third partied, just like it can feel like you got robbed of a fotd when you have a stack and someone sinks you.

It actually is intended. They changed the ability to be invaded when ships were around to prevent alliance servers from organizing traps for easy allegiance gain, but they do intend for organic third partying to be possible. I think they talked about it in one of the videos.

  • @d3adst1ck

I see. However the issue here is that unlike in Arena, in HG you only get rewarded for sinking your opponent and nothing for dealing with the 3rd party if they didn't vote up HG - increased risk with no reward? That's a fair concern. I think we shouldn't focus on what Rare wanted or not, but that it's something most players hate and changing this can only bring good out of it.

absolutely, just the difference is that you can't go back if you were a faction ship because you get booted from the server

Yeah you are right, I actually forgot about that feature because I never used it

Satisfaction...of surviving a fight in pvp, since that is the reason you joined Hourglass anyways. Just for PvP.
If your playing for rewards....silly and sad. Reward is victory and sometimes, Commendations :p

I think we shouldn't focus on what Rare wanted or not, but that it's something most players hate and changing this can only bring good out of it.

If we follow this line of thought, there will be a lot of changing in this game from the 1% that the rest of the players who enjoy what we have will be put off and never touch it. Players want "this" because for that player it make the game better for them. But not everyone.

Look at the Blunderbuss :p I liked the change, welcomed it. But the small % of pvp players disliked it. Rare did it because it what the game needed, not what players wanted. It seems to have made PvP better for even Causal now.

there won't be any satisfaction in getting third partied when you are a solo - no chance to run away to restock like in adventure as you are forced to stay in the circle, and also no chance to invite somone to help

If your playing for rewards....silly and sad. Reward is victory and sometimes, Commendations :p

Don't take words out of context please. I don't play ONLY for rewards, but when you opt into a hourglass match you expect to get rewarded for sinking ships. Sinking a 3rd party won't give you that 🤷

  • @molnaramy00

So the flip side of the increased risk, the 3rd partier doesn't get a reward either unless they flip hourglass themselves. Furthermore to my knowledge it has to be the opposite faction as the one they're intending to sink.

They may pick up an emissary flag or two but no real reward unless they're also opted in.

  • Hourglass was not intended to be a 1v1 or 2v2 etc. scenario, it was intended for pvp on demand, and at launch it allowed for third party to gain rep but that was revoked when some bad apples ruined it. Now because of some changes and over a year of misunderstanding of what it is supposed to be, many people think its supposed to be this sacred honorable duel.

Its supposed to just be a bit of fun for people who dont want to hunt down pvp and instead want to fight right now.

  • @captain-fob4141 said in why is third partying HG even possible?:

So the flip side of the increased risk, the 3rd partier doesn't get a reward either

    Right, but also no risk.

If let's say you sink them, they lose:

    • flag(if had any)

    • supplies(if had any)

and they can just come back

    On your side you lose:

    • flag

    • streak

    • supplies

and also get merged out from the server.

The biggest problem with 3rd party is being in a solo match, which is already very bad sometimes with all the people who keep running and wait till you ragequit - then you get 3rd partied and you just wasted time, you can even leave the game at that point if it's a decent crew, maybe don't even need to be so decent because you are on your own and can't deal with shooting, fixing, bailing, boarding and defending against boarders at the same time alone. In a bigger crew you have chance to get out of these situations, but as a solo not really, even if you have all the experience in the world, and you won't be able to run away. Having unfair match is a thing but having NO CHANCE at all once a 3rd party comes around is wrong in my opinion. So is this not an issue? If you think it's not then I don't know what to say anymore, I think we are just running in circles in this topic

  • @molnaramy00 said in why is third partying HG even possible?:

And here i think we could have a fruitful discussion, imho if someone mingles in the fight they should also be made part of it, if they sink they merge, the other parties get a streak increase etc.

I feel like that could be a good change

  • @molnaramy00 they would also lose any treasure they had, but they don't gain anything from the sink unless they flip it.

Like @CallMeBackdrafT pointed out, perhaps the answer is a little pop up letting you know that you need to flip hourglass for one of the factions in order to enter the circle. Hourglass seriously needs a ton of attention to remain an enjoyable part of the game, unfortunately I don't see it happening anytime soon.

Entering the circle should be free to do without issue, otherwise hourglass battle rings ar just annoying for anyone needing to be in any of the locations covered by it for a voyage or world event for instance.

However the thing i suggested would be, if the third party started shooting at anybody involved in the battle they would be counted as an adversary and would actually add value to the original parties
