[Suggestions] Improvement and unification of mechanics "Hanging on ledges" and "Harpoon Gun"

  • The improvement is to make it possible to not only be attracted to ledges, but also to automatically grab onto them, so that the player has more choice during boarding.
Example of a situation: you are going to board, but you notice that there are traps near the ladders, but at the same time you do not want to make noise so that you are not heard and the only option is to stay with a harpoon gun, but the problem is that in the current situation we cannot get on board except by hooking onto the ladder.
Solution: once these two mechanics are combined, it will be possible to climb overboard from places where there are ledges, thereby increasing the value of these two mechanics and improving the interaction with the game experience in terms of stealth and pvp.

  • @demycat they specifically made it so that the grapple gun can basically only allow you to board with the ladder by making masts f.i. Non harpoonable.

I dont see them adding harpoon to ledge grab basically adding multiple new board spots

  • @callmebackdraft No, you misunderstood me...
What I meant was that they combined the ledge grab with the harpoon so it had more uses than just grabbing the stairs
There is no need to add a gripper to the masts, etc.

  • Or…don’t use the ladder to board if you see a trap. Many other ways to get on a ship.

I think you misunderstood what he was saying. Rare purposely made the harpoon unable to grab into places on the ships that would make boarding easier, so it's unlikely they would combine the harpoon with the ledge grab for the same reason.

  • @burnbacon By this logic, all the stealth that the developers have done simply breaks down because they do not allow their mechanics to be fully implemented

  • @d3adst1ck I just thought that the ledges would be like an additional anchor in deciding whether you take two weapons and only climb the ladder, or if you take a harpoon and you have a couple more additional places where you can climb and that’s only where there are ledges

  • @demycat yeah, so you mean you could harpoon to the side of the ship from the water and then ledge grab ?

And thats what i said i dont see them adding because that effectively adds multiple places to board. Since from a ledge grab you can then pop up on the ship.

And what i said the reason for them not adding that is because they specifically made it so you can only board them with the ladders (on the smaller ships) even though you have the grapple gun.

  • @callmebackdraft For balance, it would be possible to increase the time of climbing onto the ship, so that the player does not immediately end up on the ship
For a sloop, this is not critical, because the anchor is located at the rear of the ship and if the player climbs in, somewhere near the bow, then he still needs to run to the anchor
But the situation with the brigantine is already different, there, for the most part, a little closer to the anchor from the bow than from the ladder at the back, but at the same time, the boarding will be easier to repel, since the player will have one weapon, and not two

  • @callmebackdraft It’s just that without these improvements, the ledges will be useless and people will simply make achievements and forget about this mechanic, and the harpoon will be less useful (it is only useful for boarding large ships and quickly traveling around the island, which has a very bad effect on its usefulness in the future)

  • @demycat the only thing i said:

I do not see this happinening because they specifically made it so that on the smaller ships you cannot use the grapple gun to board other then the ladders, this is why they blocked out the mast from being grappled on for instance.

If they would add it to the sloop like you said, it would add 6! Boarding spots.

Hanging is just whimsical and fun, and you can still just sneak on board and then hang on. However hanging just like regular sneaking will always be less effective then any of the hide emotes and new disguises

  • @callmebackdraft
I don't know I got a video of me hanging from a side of the sloop dropping anchor while moving to the other side of the sloop and the players were bewildered on how that happened.

As for the harpoon gun everyone thinks they over nerfed it.
You are stuck with it when you board and unless you are aiming at the deck it doesn't do anything else besides getting you closer to the ship louder so you still have to deal with ladder guarding dance.
