It's time to server hop again

  • Why waste time gathering the flames of fate and a ritual skull when your crew of 4 can server hop individually, 1 player to a closed galleon crew until one of you spots the red skull in the sky and invites the rest of your crew to your server to go and take it over.

    Fort battles are back 🤕
    Are you ready!!

This is what this update will bring. We've been here before!

  • @needsmokes Remind Yourself that overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer

  • @avecrux

This is just the reality of what will now happen on this game once again.
Sure, the hoppers won't always succeed, but they are coming..

Perhaps a server hop cool down timer will be required? Let's see how this plays out.

  • @needsmokes i just had few fights while doing FOTD yesterday. We did it 3 times. After 1st attempt we had 4 nuclear gunpowders so every ship who sail toward us got a beautiful gift from me. That made them stop trying to steal our loot ;D

  • @needsmokes sadly very true. The Devs really need to address what has been the game's fundamental issue since day 1: for any player with limited time adventure mode (which is still imho the 'main' game) can be entirely a waste of time and far too grindy.

My regular brig crew and I managed to get together for the first time in weeks yesterday (mostly due to how busy my schedule has been) and spent 90 minutes trying to get all the flames of fate while the server was quiet (which makes getting the pink flame difficult, alongside the normal RNG nature of getting the white flame). Having finally done so we headed for the fort, lit the flames, placed the skull... and within 3 minutes had a Galleon of PC players roll up on us and blow our ship out of the water. We went back to the fort to try to fight them and did alright for a while, but it was a losing battle.

So what do I have to show for my efforts last night?

    • Missed out on 2 hours of sleep

    • Achievement and commendation for activating fort

    • Not much else... except all three of us left feeling majorly demoralised and questioning whether or not we actually want to keep playing

The Insider Build testing was all well and good, but players in the Insider Build generally are a lot more collaborative than the more troll-like players you find in the main game. It was a MAJOR mistake not to include a major commendation for completing the fort in an alliance because selfish players are ruining it for everyone else

I really love this game at times, but I just don't have the time to waste on a 2-3 hour voyage where I achieve nothing - especially given time-limited things.

  • @needsmokes I agree that server hopping is stupid, and only losers do it. But as for fort battles being back all I can say is it's about time. Fort battles were some of the best fights in Sea of Thieves, and I have been missing them since Rare made the awful decision to drastically increase the fort respawn rate. You can still do the rest of the forts with almost a guarentee of not having to fight. Let us have the one.

  • @needsmokes
If the crew wants the x50 completion fort, server hops will count as 0 ... Because you need to be the crew to light the flames and summon the fort.

Same happened to us last night in our Galleon crew. Sailed the entire server over getting the flames and only saw one sloop in which we got the pink flame from. took us and hour and a half collecting the flames but we were also getting combat ready as well. Like you said before happened to us. Once the fort came active a brig , sloop and a galleon came right out of the seas. We hadn't even completed 3 waves yet! LOL .

The sloop kept his distance and the brig came close sailing by to see who was there but the Galleon was a PC crew barreling down upon us. We got back to the ship loaded to battle with a keg already swimming to them. they were kegged and boarded while we peppered them with cannon fire. we found out after a 15min fight of cat and mouse and them trying to board and sink us. They boarded a couple of times but in the end we prevailed due to communication and supplies galore to fight with. They were defeated and jumped to another server. No one even came back to challenge us after that fight.

Is that true? I thought the commendation was meant to count for anyone who was present at the fort when it was completed.

Either way, I completed the fort twice last night and did not receive credit either time. There was no alliance, and my crew started the fort, killed Graymarrow, and used the key both times.

I believed yours are glitched at the moment. We done it last night once and got all the commendations that went with the fort. We lit and placed the skull and killed Greymarrow. Hopefully yours will pop later today.

  • @inboundbomb

I sincerely hope so! This isn't behaving the same way as other server-delayed progression issues, which is concerning to me.

I hope it isn't like that one Cursed Sails Commendation for completing a battle with the proper sails on - when that commendation wasn't counting, they made us do it again once they fixed it, which was really frustrating considering it was one of many bugs on their part.

With all due respect, I'll probably be pretty frustrated is the support team tell me that my completions aren't going to count and that I have to do them over.

  • I welcome the challenge, hop as many times as you want, the unlucky lads that find our crew will leave the server empty handed.

  • @chronodusk in theory, yes. We need to be the one to summon and open the vault.
It still doesn't count to alliance, yet.

We faced the same issue last night, we cleared the fort twice in a row, from the summon to opening the vault and the commendation remained 0/x.

I would be upset as well. I really don't want to do this fort 50 times because it's a time waister and very lackluster after the 3rd time.

  • I think it would have been a neat(e) idea to have the fort fog lock in the crews at it once it starts and lock out other crews until it was complete. Neither being able to see in nor out of the fog, so it's unknown how many are there or how many waiting outside.

(And yes, I mean, you CAN'T leave once it starts, you're damned to complete it)

At least that way, the crew that started it would get the commendation for completing it, feel less like they wasted their time, and all PvP heck could break loose afterwards for the loot.

  • I will never understand the hate of Hoppers. Look at it this way, a crew already established on the server has so many advantages on the hoppers. Those crews have had plenty of time to restock on supplies, this includes a large cache of the better Cursed Cannonballs, kegs if you use them, and better food items like fish and high tiered fruit. They also have a better impression of the server, this includes boat counts, number of galleons, and how aggressive the ships in general are. Finally, you know exactly how long a Fort has been standing. A crew could only hop into a server spend 20-30 minutes on small prep only for it to be already finished and cleared out.

Established crews have a lot going for them, not seeing what the fuss is. If Rare is perfectly content with people hijacking their own servers with closed crews and afk players holding slots, why wouldn't this be ok as well?

Exactly - apparently stuff like this is only okay when the Sea of Friends brigade does it...

  • @nunoazuldimeter

Interesting. I'm curious as to how Rare will handle it.

  • @nabberwar server hopping will never be acceptable to most gamers.

I tell you one thing...… My crew is hoping to find such an alliance server to crush them all at the fort! (or at least try to) LOL!

  • @needsmokes get your own colored flames. Why ruin others game?? I dont get it. Why waste YOUR time? I realy hope Rare reads this stuff. Sorry about your time waste. Most of us play because we like it. I dont find it a waste of time..time consuming, but not a waste, until a server hopper shows up and ganks your boat. Now YOU have wasted our time. Is it so hard for you to understand that?? Its simple realy. I'm sure Rare will address it. As of now, you wont get credit for stealing a fort of the damned from a crew. Why not alliance up and do it together?? Sorry you find it such a waste of time....my crew would help you if it's too difficult getting the flames.

  • @violet-oddsauce said in It's time to server hop again:

So it's not okay to server hop for an active Fort of the Damned - but we are supposed to be okay with people who server hop over and over in hopes of landing on the same server with a specific crew, then pestering other players to give their ship away, all so they can hold down an entire server for 18+ hours until the server literally dies?

I'm just gonna say right now that one of these is a lot worse than the other... Server hopping for an active fort, which a lot of people condemn, is a lot less intrusive than server hopping for a takeoever - which a ton of people seem to be okay with and even glorify...

  • @needsmokes
Server hoppers were never a threat. They lack supplies and were always easily defeated and turned away.

    Forget gettin the flames.
    Forget beating the fort.
Im just gonna defend the fort with the skellys and enjoy the pvp.

I laughed for to long on this comment.

  • @chronodusk no, that's not right either, but we were talking about the fort of the damned. Server hopping is just not ok. This is my opinion. Others have the same thoughts as I do. If you dont want to donate your ship to an alliance, then dont. No one can make you. It's your ship. I have asked people who were logging out if we could keep thier ship. No threats, ganking or any other form of intimidation is used. If they say no, then it's no. Anyway, hoppers wont get credit for stolen FOTD. Still wont stop some hoppers but it may make a difference to others and slow it down some.

  • @violet-oddsauce

@needsmokes get your own colored flames.

Why? If I have the opportunity to take them, why shouldn't I? This game doesn't require me or anyone to play nice. You may like to play nice, and that is perfectly acceptable, but this is a sandbox game where the players dictate how they play. Fighting, sinking, and stealing is perfectly acceptable behavior in this game just as is cooperation, sharing, and aiding.

    Why ruin others game??

Playing the game in a normal capacity isn't ruining the game. This game entitle's no one with safety.

I dont find it a waste of time..time consuming, but not a waste, until a server hopper shows up and ganks your boat.

How does one truelely know its a hopper. Could be a fresh spawn or simple a player who decided to lie in wait til the most opportune time. Low supplies could be explained with poor restocking habits. Can't know every ship at all times in a server either. Maybe that brig that was seen a half hour ago left and now was replaced with a new Galleon. Wouldn't surprise me if people just drop a blanket term of hopper every time someone just sank them at the least opportune time.

Now YOU have wasted our time.

You are playing a video game, a tool designed specifically to waste time. Also, your time is no more important than anyone else's.

Is it so hard for you to understand that??

    Same.

As of now, you wont get credit for stealing a fort of the damned from a crew.

Shame, I might just wipe my tears away with all that glorious loot, which includes, Chest of Legends, gems galor, Stronghold loot etc.

Why not alliance up and do it together?? Sorry you find it such a waste of time....my crew would help you if it's too difficult getting the flames.

For many the fighting is more fun than the cooperating.

  • @nunoazuldimeter @Chronodusk my crew rolled up kn a galleon fighting Greymarrow yesterday. We sank their boat and opened the fort and got credit.

@Violet-OddSauce seeking pvp is a perfectly fine strategy. Why should I spend an hour prepping for an event when I can spend 5 minutes hopping and steal it? Part of doing a world event is defending it.

  • @morseybaby said in It's time to server hop again:

and within 3 minutes had a Galleon of PC players roll up on us and blow our ship out of the water.

Maybe those players want to play the game by stealing a fort. Why should they not be allowed to play how they want in the most efficient way? Perhaps they too are short of time and so the best way to complete the fort and get the loot, is to steal it.

  • Barrels of plenty and washed up crates full of supplies now make server hopping even more effective than ever before. The amount of supplies you can quickly gather as you speed towards a busy bee crew working away at a fort means you can put up a good fight for what should be rightfully yours 🤪

  • Personally, I am against server-hopping, since it's inherently an abuse of the system in place.

While it's true that a ship full of hoppers may not be readily stocked (which is actually less true more-so than ever before thanks to floating barrels, improved harpoons, supply crates, and storage crates), it won't stop the amount of crews attacking the fort. Picture it like this - on a regular server, you can be attacked by anywhere from 0 - 5 ships at any given time; after a while, they'lllikelygive up and move on, provided you do well enough. On the other hand, thanks to hoppers, you can now get attacked by anywhere between 0 and 5 ships constantly at any time, and even if they do give up, they'll just leave and have another take their place. Eventually, this 1-sided battle of attrition will eventually favor a lucky crew of attackers over the defenders, and due to the constant onslaught without any respite (which you would normally get prior to this update), the defensive crew is unlikely to finish before being defeated.

There's a reason Rare changed how forts work - they wanted to cull server-hopping from happening.

You should be rewarded for putting in the work, not for getting lucky and attacking a weakened ship that already sunk 20 other server-hopping ships like yours before you arrived. If you want to interrupt a fort, great, but do it the proper way, not by server-hopping.

The only good thing about this is that the amount of server hoppers will eventually die down post-event and even more so after most complete their commendations - but that won't completely put a stop to it.

  • I agree that server hopping should not be a thing.

I personaly love that Fort PvP is finally back again!
Fort PvP was simply the best form of PvP there was, and because the fort spawned in every 3 hours it was only natural for people to hop for another fort... Not only for the Rep but the excitment aswel.

You can obviously stick around longer now since you can active the new fort right of the bat even after it ended... People noy only need the commendations... there's also a athena!

But there are still servers were the silence drops after a new fort ends.

The best way Rare can adress this issue in the future is to make servers feel more active by increasing the ships per server to 8-10, and show a list of people that are on the server. Because it's only natural to stay on a server that is active and has a lot of people going around, nobody wants to stay on a quiet server.

But Rare already stated that it was tricky to increase the number, and wouldnt happen anytime soon.

But trying to punish server hoppers won't do any good besides making those PvPer's quit the game.

because of immersion and fun playing tha game rather than gaming the system. At least to me. I know a lot do only game the system, but i dont mind anymore, everybody to its own.

    Fort battles are back 🤕
    Are you ready!!

Yes i'm ready and i like it!

  • @bugaboo-bill

    Fun aren't they.

Can't wait for the weekend and being able to spend a bit longer doing some.
Ps. I don't fort hop. I'm just readyin everyone for it.. 😂

i have only done 1 Fort until, but i hope for a lot of Action on the weekend, but unfortunately my competent crew is split up a bit and i'm not sure if i can organize good crewmember to compensate my presence XD
Fort Hopping is dull and gaming the system, i wont ever do it.

I had fun at the fort altthough we got sunk twice, i was the only one who survived and hid on the attackers crows nest.
My Mates came back, but unfortunately they sunk us again. we came back again as we were already fighting Graymarrow.
Until a 2nd Galleon was there, but nor the Galleon, neither the Brigantine that sunk us 2 times attacked again.
We suggested they wait for us killing Graymarrow.
So we finished it and were prepared to get ambushed or whatever, but nothing happened and we delivered the loot without any hassle.

What i want to say is, that in this case pvp for pvp sake and not competing for the loot is a bit beyond me and gives me the idea of bullys who do not play the game and fight with us, but just try to bully a bit.
Ok, everybody to their own as i said, but i wanted them to attack us again and fight for the loot.
Unfortunately they didnt want to, although they had the upper hand up to this moment.
