Shores of Gold Last Boss "Gold Hoarder"

  • Seriously what is with this boss. It is not fun to die over and over and over because of infinitely spawning ranged adds coupled with his slam you can't run away from to escape damage. Its not a hard fight because there is no skill challenge, it is unavoidable damage on a boss with a huge health pool. Adds spawn so much that you'll take damage often up to half your health immediately upon spawning in after death. Did this on both a sloop and Brig crew with same experience, horrible. Needs to be fixed. Often times you can't even approach the boss because there is a gauntlet of newly spawned skellies in the way that will gun you down before you can either reach him or attack the ranged ones to minimize them, because oh by the way they just spawned more of them in. Multiple strategies, all met with just pain and frustration. This fight had the potential to be fun and enjoyable but its just not, not at all.

  • The Gold Hoarder can be a tedious fight. Blunderbuss at close range will stagger him momentarily and stop him from eating bananas, mix that with constant sword lunging and your good.

I see a lot of players using the slash on the sword and i find it to be more time consuming and less effective. Just block, walk back, sword dash into them and repeat.

Takes away some of those deaths and lets you deal more damage. This also works on FoTD.

  • I always find it humerus when people say the fight isn't hard, meanwhile, the admit to dying over and over again. One could certainly argue its time consuming, but if all you are doing is throwing bodies at the problem til its fixed, that just demonstrates to me their has been little done for strategy and preparations for the fight.

  • Terrible boss. Grey marrow 2.0

  • @manimal601 dev's be lazy making new content

Skeleton Lord fights need an overhaul. I can 100% get behind making something difficult and challenging. I'm a big advocate for this with Sea of Thieves because more things in this game really do need to present a bigger challenge.

Skeleton Lords need an actual boss fight which requires the player to figure out how to reveal a weakness and has several phases to it, where new attacks are introduced as you get closer to defeating them.

    Some ideas:

    • Why not have Graymarrow introduce a new attack midway through his battle where he hurls a cursed ritual skull at a player, requiring the player to swing their cutlass to reflect it back at Graymarrow - rewarding the player by stunning Graymarrow and making him vulnerable? This was a fun mechanic in Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time.

    • Why not have Briggsy create duplicates of herself in a circle as a signature move, punishing the player for attacking the wrong one?

    • Why not have the Gold Hoarder raise up dozens of large cursed Gold Coins in the air that he'd fire off one-by-one and would home in on the player?

There's so much potential, but they're limiting themselves by attempting to make everything so easy to figure out - content like this will never meet it's full potential if they keep designing everything to be simple and straightforward. I hope to see this change in the future.

  • @chronodusk im the biggest supporter for cool and unique Skeleton Lord fights! Im a big fan of elemental powers! Like Thunder, Fire, Ice, Storm etc.

Why there’s no Lord with an thunder ability? Or an Lord who can poison you? That are all mechanics that are in game! And why the heck the Gold Hoarder isn’t an unique encounter? He’s the Bosd of the Shores of Gold, an famous and long known Skeleton Lord! Why he can’t do anything with the Element Gold(Turn you in Gold, Turn himself in Gold for defense?!) or why he isn’t using his Shovel as Sword and fight with it? This encounter needs an ability overhaul!

We will see, if Future Lords are only Briggsy Re-Skins I must quit this game!

There are years and years worth of fantastic video games with engaging and interesting boss fights to take reference from. Notice how I referenced Ocarina of Time's Gannondorf battle for the Graymarrow "tennis style" ritual skull projectile thing.

With so much frame of reference for them to go off of, I do not think that the lack of depth in these fights comes from a lack of talent in their studio - that isn't it at all... I suspect they purposefully made it straightforward so that it demands minimal problem solving ability from the player.

That's trend with this game's designs; make it so that players think as little as possible. I think they need to move away from that thought process.

  • @nabberwar There are no strategies or preparations to be had. Strategy does not even come into the picture because of the way the fight is set up. I would love it if there WERE a strategic approach you could use for the fight but with its mechanics it's nonsensical.

  • @bigtorvol Am employing that "strategy" however it's just like skimming a bit off to be honest. My whole point is that there should be a way to do this fight without dying a ton of times, but there just simply is NOT.

I vehementally disagree, kiting him into cannon range works wonders. Stocking up on Gunpowder also aids in the fight as well. Just because you aren't aware of strategies doesn't mean they don't exist.

  • @nabberwar I think you may not have read the title dude. This post is about the Gold Hoarder, the last boss in the Shores of Gold Tall Tale. There is zero way to kite him into cannon range back through all of the traps and up ladders and across jump puzzles, nor is there any way to get an explosive barrel all the way through that mess intact. I am pretty sure the door even locks behind you when you start the fight, lol.

You are probably talking about the FotD bosses, which is not what I am discussing in this post.

  • Hey...um...

Solo it. Spam your blunderbuss, then hack until he kills you. Respawn, rinse repeat, winsauce.
I've solo'd him before the updates and after. Still feels the same as a solo slooper. Maybe even run to opposite corners to draw off the skellies so you can get in a few more hits before you respawn. It's a battle of attrition. 🤷🏽‍♀️🧜🏽‍♀️

Yeah that's the entire point, there is no tactic or strategy that makes it fun or interesting. All you can do is spawn, blow your blunder, maybe hack a few times, die, then repeat over and over. The fight SHOULDN'T consist of that, it doesn't make sense and it is not fun. After all the effort and fun of doing the puzzles, riddles, jump puzzles, etc. it shouldn't end with that horrid mess of a boss battle. It completely ruins the experience.
