Confused on the "free" AC coins...

  • So, what gives?

Some have "email proof" that Rare basically chose random pirates to receive AC's for the holidays; free of charge. There's also the hide-emote in the mix that is included.

Here I am, sitting with neither.

Is it true Rare just picked players out of a hat? I'm confused on what is actually happening. My buddy yesterday pinged me and others on Discord asking if someone "gifted" him AC's... come to find out, he was a chosen pirate. My other buddy also got 500 ACs. I feel this is a valid complaint on my end, y'know? Being the holidays and all, something like this should be given out to the entire playerbase.

Am I wrong to think as such? I find it sorta... not alright in my book.

  • @weepaperboats think it was a random chance to get a gift. Just bad luck on your end unfortunately

@weepaperboats think it was a random chance to get a gift. Just bad luck on your end unfortunately

If that is true, then that isn't cool whatsoever.

  • @weepaperboats yeah it was just kinda like a lottery I guess, some people got emotes some people got AC, some nothing. Better than all getting nothing.

  • @teammastadon Sure but why create division like that? You're upsetting a large group of your player base by doing this.... It doesn't make sense from a PR standpoint at all.

  • @weepaperboats Why do people think they deserve these gifts. I mean rare was trying to do something nice and everybody now feels they are entitled to having a present like the lucky people that did get gifts. Just grow up and deal with it nothing was taken from you and nothing was given to you. Your just as you were yesterday

  • The hide emote is free for everyone. Just gotta go to the in game shop and grab it.

  • Yeah getting the gift of something which is free for everyone is a kick in the teeth.

  • dont know if people realize, that they sound so spoiled an privilege, almost like little kids.

He got a gift, then I should get one to!! is that how gift giving works?

  • Its weird, I received a hide emote according to the email, just waiting for me in the emporium. I thought they were giving random gifts to the people. But I went to the emporium and I didnt have any gift there.

I raised a support ticket but they answered me with a copy-paste text that doesnt answer my question.

Now I am reading that maybe they were talking about the free hide emote. But that was free for everyone, not a gift that now is waiting for me in the emporium.

Amyways, even if that were the case, why they dont say anything? Why they dont just answer saying that email was a wrong idea or a bug?

    I dont get what's happening.

Say to someone that has a gift when it is not true is not a good thing.

How on Earth is it a kick in the teeth? What a ridiculous thing to say.

Just because everyone gets it does not mean it is not a gift.

The entitlement in this community is high.

  • I think the people making points about entitlement are correct re: the attitude that others have. Some would have been upset if they didn't get anything no matter what. But it is worth saying that the way they went about this could have been better, even if nothing else about it changed but the method.

Given how the emails went out it's not fair to say that it's children getting upset because one got a gift and another didn't, or it wasn't as good. It's more like two kids each got a wrapped gift box, but one of them was just empty. Adults would/should move on, but a kid wouldn't be dumb to see that as a mean joke.

  • I don't need the coins or the emote. I couldn't care less about getting another pet or some cosmetics I'll never use. But tomorrow, I'm going to follow Rare's model. I'm going to randomly chose two out of my four children. One will get £5, one will get a toy I've taken from their bedroom, and the others will get nothing. And following the advice of @Biter-Wylie I'm going to tell those last two to stop acting so entitled. Quit whining. It's going to be the best Christmas ever.

If EA had done this, there'd be a backlash and people would be criticising them from every angle. Rare deserves any heat its getting for this badly handled issue.

I work for a company with over 100,000 employees, we all got a Christmas gift this year and it was the same for everyone. No exclusion or differences. You can't expect to give your entire community a gift but then exclude people or make the gifts different values and not expect a problem.

Rare's lack of awareness and communication on this issue has been disappointing.

They probably will probably be fine with that. My kids would be happy for their brothers and sisters.

Thanks for demonstrating entitlement so perfectly 👍🏻

  • Im pretty sure ive got it without an email but if you ask me i would rather an item that we can all get for being part of the game for the second year.
But its not a big deal for not getting it.

  • The guy who made the comparison with money, a toy from their room, and nothing was pretty spot on. The other guy who just plunged his face into that challenge with "of course I would" is pretty funny though. The George Bluth household.

  • @withmyapologies then again, they’ have given the 12 days of gifts to the whole community, this ancient coin lottery is a giveaway. Why can’t people see this?

  • @biter-wylie said in Confused on the "free" AC coins...:

Thanks for demonstrating entitlement so perfectly 👍🏻

I haven't. Entitlement is all about believing you should get special treatment. Eg, "I should get coins and you shouldn't, because I'm a Rare super fan and play the game more than you." What we're seeing here is anger at a perceived injustice.

Kudos to you, though, to have brought up such great kids. Hope you all have a wonderful Christmas.

  • Is it not better to give than receive young grasshoppers? Revel in your mates excitement over receiving the Ancient coins and celebrate with them! Merry Christmas

  • Bro you need to relax not take it personally. When the year 1 pirate legend stuff came out I was one of the last people to receive that stuff that I knew meanwhile stat for stat achievement for achievement I doubled everyone. It's a waiting game im shocked by the amount of posts. I get it but just wait and see. All you need is a little patience.

  • The email is misleading btw. Noone in our household got free coins, and only one of us got the free emote email. 3 of us are not regular players, 2 are and have bought AC. The one who got an email has found an Ancient Skelly but hasn't picked up the free emote. I have not found an Ancient Skelly, but got the free emote on update day and no email. The email should specify that there is a free emote, not "we gifted you an emote"

  • I honestly would have been fine with this if it was based off of something other than random chance, such as who gave the most gifts in the event or something like that.

  • @shaggy438 I don't think everyone is mad they didn't get a gift. I'm honestly hoping Rare doesn't do this "lottery" system for ANY kind of reward in the future. Someone at Rare thought this setup was a good one (good thought), but clearly the community has a voice on the execution of it.

With already numerous RNG factors like loot boxes and "surprise mechanics," events like this are clearly going to create more frustration than intended cheer. So typical feedback to the company is fair.

  • @cwbrumm said in Confused on the "free" AC coins...:

@biter-wylie You know you’re wrong, but at this point you’re just too stubborn to come down off your high horse. Either that or you legitimately have zero social skills.

Your wrong LOL! Wow the strength of your argument.

You might want to look inwards for answers to your feelings of jealousy.

  • So you're telling me some people have a special hide emote that no one else can get? Tell me again how this is abalanced game that isn't nt pay to win.....

  • @skylerpk said in Confused on the "free" AC coins...:

So you're telling me some people have a special hide emote that no one else can get?

That's like the opposite of what people are complaining about, but okay.

  • @skylerpk said in Confused on the "free" AC coins...:

So you're telling me some people have a special hide emote that no one else can get? Tell me again how this is abalanced game that isn't nt pay to win.....

No, the free "gift" emote is available in the emporium. It's in the Hide and Sneak pack. It's been free since released with the last update. It's one of the ones that hide your gamertag so there aren't pay to win complaints.

Everyone can get it. I had mine since the update despite being anti-tuck...

  • So it seems mixed feelings surround this topic.
I can see merit from both sides of the argument however feel Rare went about this in the wrong sort of way personally.

Next year i would like to see some sort of "Secret Pirate Santa" where us the players are able to Gift others with things, maybe even gift items we own but no longer want?
I got so many cosmetics i never use now gathering dust, just a thought.

Or better still run a Charity Gifting event this time of year where all Pirates are able to gift to others from the emporium but all proceeds go to a charitable cause.
Frankly something like this is the only way i'll be spending any more actual money with this title.

  • @weepaperboats It's a random giveaway. This isn't someone's work, or family - it's customers. It's like saying to a store... "you randomly gave away 1000 $5 gift cards... I've shopped here for years... why don't I get a $5 gift card?!" You don't get one because you weren't randomly picked.

  • @ixxolos

I like this idea and fully support it.

Though, with some of the tantrums I've seen, the negative side of me almost hopes Rare doesn't do any kind of gift event next year.

But that would be petty and vindictive, so I won't think about it.

    Nope, not thinking about it.

    Not at all.

  • I'm surprised, yet not surprised by the differences in responses here.

On one hand, in another thread, a pirate got 700 ACs and told others to, "Get over it. Poor you.", while flashing his free 700 AC. On the other hand, anyone who did not receive anything whatsoever has a valid complaint surrounding this issue. (This is a main concern I've sorta been seeing)

There is no communication on Rare's end. If I were part of its marketing team, this isn't the way to "surprise" your community. As you can see, we're just in a cesspool of disagreement. We certainly do not know if ACs are going to "roll out" from the 23rd to the 31st. There isn't even word on that either. It's completely normal for fans/people of the community to raise concern.

To those saying people who obtained nothing aren't entitled, I'm going with some of the latter. You have loyal fans out there who feel kicked in the teeth when their buddy they introduced to the game a week ago, who doesn't even play it, got 750 ACs. The loyal player got nothing. There is nothing, stat-wise or commendation-wise, to calculate your coins. Rare just threw you in a hat, and choose randoms to give a currency you'd otherwise need to spend money on.

Also, this free AC can complete an entire Collector's set for you, if you add it in to your left over ACs, free of charge, for example.

I'm going to get sacked for my opinion on this, I know it. But, coming from a PR & Advertising background, this is not only harmful to the community, but there has been little-to-no communication from Rare on this as well as utter confusion surrounding this giveaway. To back it up, it's also the holiday season. I also consume myself in World of Warcraft, and I pay for that service every month. During the holidays, each and every player gets the same new gifts; all on an equal front. No one gets an insane, exclusive gift, and no one gets nothing. That game already has enough RNG in it, but even some of that can be justified. In WoW, if a boss didn't drop a helmet you need, that's RNG. Although, you can try again at a different level on the same boss, or simply wait until next week. There may even be a better alternative helmet instead. Thing is, you just play the game. They wouldn't just give away 1-million gold to random players... so much backlash in the community would arise. Bad business.

In this situation, Rare gave out, (to some a more generous amount than others), their new currency you'd need to pay real life money for. Doesn't matter if you played for 5 hours, or since Beta to this very day; you're all in the same hat with no regard or connection whatsoever. There is already an uneven field at work in the community, and I can completely understand the confusion and frustration of those who got nothing.

Now, what about me? I'm more concerned about the confusion behind this fiasco, honestly. I'm sitting here without a gift, and I'm ultimately okay with it, but can't help but be a little discouraged at the same time. I'm happy for those who got AC coins; especially to those who snagged 700-750 ACs. But, remember there are also those who got nothing while the friends they sail with got something. To some it is not a feel-good moment.

  • @captain-taben said in Confused on the "free" AC coins...:

I'm the same either give us all something or just dont bother its just a mindless idea.

Well, for me it'd be more to spite the people complaining. But like I said, that's petty and mean, so I'm trying to squash those impulses. =P

    @weepaperboats

I'm just disappointed in the over the top bitterness of a lot of these responses. I didn't win the email lottery, and I'm just fine with it. Honestly, at this point I'm hoping I don't win a thing so I can continue to be an example.

People keep saying that some are getting nothing, but that's not technically true. Rare has been giving out stuff for the last 12 days; it's just all been ingame items and events.

What they mean is that they didn't get anything worth real money. And I can understand being disappointed by not winning, but when they start to talk about "deserving" it, they've lost me.

When I paid money for this game, my understanding was that I gave Rare my $60 and they provided me with a functioning product and the promise to support it for an undetermined amount of time. Everything else is sprinkles on top.

I've been playing since the alpha. And in recognition of that, Rare gave me my Day One patch and my Launch Team eye-of-reach. I thought it was a kind gesture and I appreciated it.

When I heard Rare was doing a lottery and it looked like I hadn't won, my thoughts were, "ah darn, would've been nice to get some free coins". Then I forgot about it and went on with my day.

I know I've come across as a bit harsh in some of my posts, but the idea of actually getting angry over this and stewing about it....

Eh, it's just so foreign to me that I can't get past it. I don't want to call people childish, but that's my knee jerk reaction to the angrier posts.

If you think Rare could have been clearer from a business perspective, then fair enough. I don't know that kinda stuff, so I'm not going to speak on it.

But feeling "slapped in the face", and people posting multiple angry rants about it?

I don't know. Just seems a little much to me.
