New info about cosmetic/emote reset on log out

  • I have done quite a bit of testing, and here are my findings:

Every slot in the clothing chest counts as *EDIT six emote slots.

Every slot in the vanity chest counts as *EDIT six emote slots, Each and every emote you equip counts as one item.

Equipment chest and armory don't count*

There is a hard cap of total items (clothing chest + vanity chest + emotes) that SoT will save between sessions, *EDIT but this hard cap isn't fully defined yet. I'll be trsting more tonight to come up with the actual number

When you reach the cap, if you stop exactly at the cap and log out, everything will save, but any new changes you make after logging back in will not save.

If you are over the cap when you log out, the game will revert your setup to the last time you exited the clothing/vanity chest while having as close to the cap without going over.

I'm not actually sure if the hard cap is intentional or if it is the actual glitch.

Does anyone out there have more than 39 items equipped? If so, that would tell us that the cap is the glitch, and not an intended hard cap.

*If you are at or above 39 items between the clothing and vanity chest, no changes you make in the armory nor the equipment chest will save. So while they don't count towards the hard cap, they are still affected by it.

*Edited due to @Archaell 's findings

  • Right now missing -5 items title/tattoo/scar/make-up/curse. If I try to add any of these, it no longer saves.

I have 40 emotes equiped tho.
After removing 6 emotes, it allowed me to add additional vanity item (make-up) to -4.
After removing 12 emotes, it allowed me to add additional vanity item (tattoo) to -3.

Seems like any started set of 6 emotes takes as much space as 1 visible slot.

  • I have all 5 pages of emotes equipped and haven't had any issues with my appearance - and I'm wearing the complete Redcoat set.

  • @galactic-geek How many unequiped items do you have? Things like not using beard, or default coloured underwear can help to avoid the limit.

  • This is all great feedback.

@Archaell I also noticed something strange with the number allotment... I think it may be even stranger than 6:1...

I noticed that I could remove a set of emotes, then it would let me add a visual item and save. Then I added one emote at a time until it wouldn't save again, and I was able to add 4 - 5 emotes back that I had previously removed...

I was working with sets of 8 emotes though, instead of 6, so I'll have to do more testing, as those results are likely skewed if it only takes 6 emotes to free up a visual slot.

@Galactic-Geek Since you've had no issues, would you mind doing an experiment? Equip something in every single clothing and vanity slot (or as many as possible), then relog and see if it saved. If it does save, that'll be huge.

  • @archaell said in New info about cosmetic/emote reset on log out:

No gloves, no hook, no pegleg; sometimes no hat. I can also probably lose the shirt as most of the jackets I wear cover the torso fully.

@BactaTankBill I'll try it when I get home.

  • I added a dress, gloves, hook, pegleg, and curse - not a single 1 was there upon restart.

  • @galactic-geek It is as I feared then... A hard cap put in place by Rare due to potential technical limitations, rather than a glitch.

Thank you much for the experiment and the update, my Rodian friend.

  • I actually forgot about the dress so it was -6 items instead of -5.

Tried it the other way around, equiped everything (dress included), 8 emotes saved. 9 emotes did not.

Seems like the limit has not considered the additional emote wheels.

  • Tonight's testing uncovered something quite interesting:

Certain tattoo sets (Bone crusher, Constellation, Ashen Dragon) actually take up 7 emote slots, while all the rest take up the standard 6 slots.

This is very strange, because I thought it might be related to the complexity of the tattoo set (more complex = more slots). However, the Umbra set is the most complex tattoo in the game, but it only takes 6 emote slots...

Even more testing is now required

  • @bactatankbill Feel free to shoot me up any time. 😁

  • Nice investigative work here.
Hopefully this helps them nail down the issues some have had with this.

I've always been rather selective about the things I'd buy, so I wonder how many unequipped items I have (not as many as most). I've not had any saving issues since a couple of updates ago.

  • @galactic-geek LOL I see what you did there. COUGH Han shot first COUGH

@ElectricKnights Yeah I'm sure this isn't very high on Rare's list of things to fix (which I don't mind. I'd much rather them work on hit reg or optimization), so my goal here is either

    A. We find some bit of info about the hard cap that makes this an easy fix for Rare

    or

    B. We find a way to circumvent the hard cap, at which point it won't really need to be fixed any time soon.

Also I never considered the total number of items owned... I offer the same experiment to you if you'd like: Equip something in every clothing and vanity slot (including undie dye, curses, just everything), then log out and back in to see if it saved.

  • So, last night logged into the game for a second session and I got the cosmetics bug, everything had reset back to default... Only thing I had added in an earlier session was the X Marks The Spot emote.

I re-added everything and did a count... My clothes and vanities not including emotes is normally 12 slots... the X Marks The Spot was my 28th emote, so equipping that put me at 40 slots - so just over the theoretically 39 slots limit. The theory about the packs means nothing, it seems to me, it is actually individual emotes that count separately.

As soon as I add all emotes (bringing the total to 40 slots), leave and join a new session, it breaks again.

However leaving that broken session without re-equipping anything fixed it again for me when I joined a new session (correct pirate).

I reproduced this bug twice to confirm how I broke it and how I fixed it.

I've unequipped a few of the emotes just to be safe now but it seems to be consistently saving for me again.

None of the times did it show the incorrect clothing on the lobby menu for me, so it might affect everyone slightly differently?
