Captaincy Update - will it ever come?

For example, let's say they release the captaincy update, where 1 person chooses the ship's name. Because he got in 1st, and chose the name, he sees himself as captain, which at a glance, makes sense since it's the captaincy update. So, he starts telling others what to do and barks orders, and punishes those who fail to listen. Meanwhile, you've got up to 3 other pirates who aren't feeling very pirate-like, are having their feelings hurt, who are unsatisfied with the game if this is how it's meant to be played, and who are starting to resent their self-imposed captain that they never even chose. As a result, nothing gets done, either because the crew decides to leave or troll the captain, or because the captain decides to grief the crew. In that scenario, an individual basically goes power-mad over naught, and ruins the experience for everyone involved, including themselves. Nobody wins. That is NOT a fun game.

That's not how captaincy would work though, it's not first person loading in becomes captain it's a pirate legend specific feature and not only that but a feature that's locked off behind more work after you hit PL (what that was meant to be we have no idea). Players joining in on this ship would be joining in on the captain's ship but that still doesn't excuse toxic behavior and should be reported if it happened. It also incentivizes players to actually grind towards PL and put in the work to become a legendary captain so they too can have their own personal ship they can bring others along on and create their own reputations. Pirate legend originally was supposed to mean something and so far it doesn't mean anything other than a title you can wear and a very minimal amount of over priced cosmetics most don't use.

So in my opinion this doesn't really alienate anyone but only gives players motivation to work towards endgame, everyone has the same route of becoming a legendary captain but only those who are willing to put in the work towards it become legendary captains. You may like the game how it is now but a lot of players feel very differently and would like to see captaincy release.

I would also like to add that captaincy, as far as I'm aware, was never meant to give the owner of the ship special permissions in terms of brigging or being the deciding vote for voyages I'm pretty sure that was something the community thought of. Captaincy, how I would want to see it, would give the legendary captain sole permission to modify and name their ship to their liking (being a very brief summary of what I want in terms of customization) and it save as a ship you can launch from the main menu.

    This^^^

It's one thing to cater to the casuals and new players but once they learn/catch on to the fact that PL is nothing special, they don't feel the need to get there anymore and in many cases stop playing after that. Goals are needed for longevity of the player's interest and right now the "endgame" goals are seriously lacking.

10mil players have played but how many have actually stayed and are active? I can't say for sure but if I had to throw a guesstimate based on xbox stats, twitch viewers (compared to other games): I'd say like 50k average daily players.

  • @icymethodman I have friends who don't care about ever reaching PL because of exactly that, no point why bother, while I get that some people are fine with that way of thinking that kinda defeats the whole point of Rare's vision of PL being something special. Why even have PL if it means nothing?

  • @navillicious My example was based upon what numerous others have suggested in the past and nothing more, because as is, none of us actually know what the Captaincy update would entail. As I said before, we can only guess.

SoT is 1 of those games that doesn't really have an endgame - it's constantly growing and expanding, particularly where the lore is concerned.

Having an endgame makes the game finite. Once players reach it, they stop playing, as evidenced by pirates who reach PL status either quitting or asking for more - sadly, those are the pirates who "don't get it" so to speak. If they decide to quit before ever truly starting, then they were never meant for this style of game to begin with and either don't get it, as I already said, or they simply lack self confidence. It's the experience of the Adventure that matters, not the highest level achievable or endgame.

Rare can add more, and has, without putting it behind a vertical leveling wall. The levels we have now to reach PL, if anything, was likely just a compromise with Microsoft to incentivize pirates to play, especially early on, when the game was very sparse.

I'm still a firm believer that they were forced by MS to release far too early, and as such, that has affected SoT negatively ever since, particularly where reviews are concerned.

  • They should make a captaincy update with about all of those things but add a new emissary inspired by the east indian trading company and there are excluse voyages specifically for pirate legends only and they are very unique to keep players playing the game.

  • Ahoy maties!
