Show how many players that are online on the server

  • Hi my fellow Pirates.

Lets be honest here, nobody wants to play on a server with 0 ships on it. Or atleast us PvP players dont want to. I know, there's these two categories between PvP and PvE players. Personally I'm the PvP one.

So what I'm saying is, that devs need to make this thing that shows how many players and ships are online on the server your playing on. Or else you're just wasting your time sailing around looking for ships to battle, when in reality there's noone.

So if you're a PvP player, and you see that there's not many online you just leave and go to other one. If PvE players want to do their thing, they can just search for ones with not many people online.

In the end of the day it's a pirate game, but whats a pirate game without ships shooting and plundering eachother? These PvE players need to step their game up. You cannot sail around only doing quests, without battling other ships, come on man its a pirate game. But if PvE players want to do their thing, they can do it but they need to look "pirate" in the eyes.

  • Agree, it could even be visible only when starting the server. You know, with the "You're playing with all players" -text.

  • @shadyjayp Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like different servers to choose from and then it shows how many ships and players are online! Great idea.

  • @plebochino

I would not be against a board in outposts highlighting who is in the world with wanted signs for instance. Yet being alone is not going to last all to long as you will be merged.

Additionally the majority of people are not in either group PvE or PvP. Most people are not binary, but engage in both aspects of the game. I have and will do more PvE and PvP while out on the seas and most people I know do the same. We hit the seas and we see where it takes us, sometimes it is quiet and others action packed. People enjoy more than just one aspect of the game.

  • Not going to comment on the PvP PvE thing... Not needed for this post but op decided to put it in.

Either way I agree on this. A server count would be great. Like in most games you hit a button and scoreboard pops up as overlay. Would be super helpful

  • PvP players wasting time is a good thing, because PvE players also waste time when they get attacked, not to mention loot stolen. Having to sail around keeps the PvEvP world in balance.

The main issue with the idea is that players would see how desolated the servers are. I don't think that's something Rare would want to brag about.

If such feature was to be added, I am against the idea of it being easily available. It should be tied to a physical object, like a board, and preferably not at Outposts. The best option would be the Glorious Sea Dogs' place. The board should also be updated only once a day (in-game time) so that the information is less reliable. If it's done like this, I wouldn't be against the idea of even showing the list of player names that are or recently were playing on the server.

  • Gonna play Devil's Advocate here - a big part of the Adventure is simply not knowing. If you knew how many pirates were around server hopping would be at an all time high, and you would either end up in peaceful servers or brutal servers with no in between.

I say suck it up, and #BeMorePirate.

  • @archaell I like the idea to have it only at the Sea Dogs tavern and maybe the update similar to barrel fills being daily.

Means it takes effort to see and is never 100% reliable. I like the idea of having a wanted sign with my name and maybe a drawing of my face on it with some random award amount placed on it.

  • A couple of notes on this. I see a wanted sign suggestion, and while that is cool, I don't want my gamer tag on it. I don't want random messages from people trying to rile me into a frenzy so I will engage in PvP with them. Which you all know would happen. It is bad enough I can't hide my gamer tag currently.

As for finding pirates, I have not been on a server in a very, very long time that I would say I was alone on. There have been times I thought I was alone, only to sail over to another region as part of a quest, or just to see what is out there, and what do you know, there are 3-4 ships in that area.

Rare has done a much better job with their population of servers over the past 6 months. They even changed the merge feature to merge without everyone having to have a dropped anchor and on their ship. Which is good and bad. It forces server mergers without regard to what pirates will do to try and keep it from happening (i.e. avoid dropping anchor unless one or more pirates are not on the ship).

But it is also bad because your screen gets locked, and this sucks if you are sailing in a storm, trying to sail in as close to a straight line as you can, or in mid turn, only to keep turning well past when you should have ended the turn, or running into an island because you can't raise sails or lower the anchor. There are many more of these situations, but you get the point.

Some reasons you might be in an empty server are.

    • Server hoppers join your server, don't see the cloud they are looking for, then leave server improperly. Locking up that ship spot for over 10 minutes.
    • People have something they are working on and out of site.
    • You are on a full server with all others engaged in PvE and actively avoiding everyone, including you, and doing a darn good job of it.
    • Occasionally, Rare's server population mechanics do fail, but as often as they used to.

Having said all of that, I would not be apposed to a counter, something you had to go out and find, like the Sea Dog Cavern suggestion above. Heck, you could even do wanted posters, just no gamer tags, please.

  • @archaell Wouldnt make sense to sail all the way to an outpost just to check how many players are online

  • @plebochino

It doesn't make sense to particularly need to know when the Seas can change drastically in the time it takes you to do anything about it.

  • let those who love PvP look for their prey without knowing how many ships are on the server, it will be honest

  • @plebochino sagte in Show how many players that are online on the server:

    Hi my fellow Pirates.

Lets be honest here, nobody wants to play on a server with 0 ships on it.

Servers merge if you are alone!
And a server holds between 2 and 24 players with 2-6 crews in total and all ships possible. 6 Sloops = 6 to 12 players.
    6 Galleones = 6 to 24 players.
You will bareley have only 2 Sloops with 2 players on a server or at least nit for a long time.

Or atleast us PvP players dont want to. I know, there's these two categories between PvP and PvE players. Personally I'm the PvP one.

Wrong, there may be PvX only players, but they all aproach the game limited, the true score is a mix of both aka contested PvE or like we say PvEvP.
Forts and Reapers are best examples but literaly everything else, even Tall Tales are too.

So what I'm saying is, that devs need to make this thing that shows how many players and ships are online on the server your playing on.

They dont need to, use your spyglas.
This game is not about PvP only (nor pve only) and to go out to hunt others.
If you wanna do that fine, but please dont ask for changes to the game to fit your playstyle, but use the given tools instead.

You ask for easy kills, nor wanting to put the effort in to leave your mark it in the Seabox.

Or else you're just wasting your time sailing around looking for ships to battle, when in reality there's noone.

    Playing games is wasting time.
If you look for esport or more serious PvP competition SoT is the wrong game for you.
This is a comical pirate game for casuals and for fun players what is all about a mix of pve and pvp in a playfull way.

So if you're a PvP player, and you see that there's not many online you just leave and go to other one. If PvE players want to do their thing, they can just search for ones with not many people online.

So you seem not to immerse and play a pirate but to cheese the system to please your playstyle what is a limited one if we consider what the game is really about.
For sure not a PvP only game, even if you make or aproach it like one.

In the end of the day it's a pirate game, but whats a pirate game without ships shooting and plundering eachother?

Never missed any shooting and plundering during my sessions.
Or lets say very rarely. Playing since tech alpha.

These PvE players need to step their game up. You cannot sail around only doing quests, without battling other ships, come on man its a pirate game. But if PvE players want to do their thing, they can do it but they need to look "pirate" in the eyes.

LoL, take this and exchange PvP for PvE and it's the same limited blabla, seriously it's biased only, nothing else.

  • Playing on a server with 0 ships?
Well for starters, no server is empty, you count as one. And follow up your still never alone, map is huge.

If your alone, server will merge.

  • @plebochino

As a pirate who prefers to steal from others, I disagree with your logic.

The Sea of Thieves is experience is all about not knowing what awaits you in the world. Even the slightest detail being revealed to the player, such as a player count, would spoil this.If there was a player count, people would just start abandoning servers for more active or less active servers based on the type of experience they're looking for...

That's the thing with this game - players should have zero knowledge or control about the world they're stepping into. The world should never reveal itself to the player without exploration. It should always be unpredictable and everyone should be adapting to every condition, player, or threat they're experiencing on the seas.

People always request things that would aid them in having a more predictable experience and more ways to seek and find the type of session that they want to experience... PvE servers for safer sessions, player counts and lists for more PvP heavy servers, matchmaking preferences to encounter like minded crews....

People need to realize that Sea of Thieves is more about presenting the player with what they do not expect, rather than conforming to what the player wants - If players just realized this, more people of all kinds of play styles would come to appreciate Sea of Thieves for what it is...

That's because most gamers game systems and lack the abiltiy to immerse and play for fun only.
It's cheesing it to their wants.
Serverhopping is cheesing the game, refusing to have an unpredictable adventure but to farm active Forts or go for PvP only or whatever.

The "I wanna PvE Servers, and I want it now" guys will love it...

One of the things I like most about Sea of Thieves is the feeling of not knowing what's going on. Not knowing how many people are on the server is one of the things that gives this feeling. If it shows how many people are on the server, this would dramatically increase server-hopping.

  • @targasbr Agree, with you now that I've seen what trouble it may cost it should be like a sign some place around the Sea of Thieves that shows you how many that are online. Eventually the Sea Dog outpost.

Sorry the trouble I caused guys. See you on the seas.

Don't worry, mate. This is a feedback forum, all ideas should be posted and discussed.
