Whale Missions for the Hunters Call

  • So at this point I am lvl 14 in hunters call and I am realizing that grinding this will be very tedious and monotonous. Now I know that this is meant to be a side thing and that you just turn in the fish you have. However, I think that it would be awesome if hunters call would become more of a immersive guild that a side project for pirates. So, I propose whaling missions for the hunters call. Harpooning a meg is really fun and imagine doing something like that and getting rewarded for it.

You would start the mission by getting the quest from a seaport andYou will receive a bounty with a location on it (similar to ghost ships). Once you get to said location, you will see the whale surface and blow a bunch of water in the air. Then it will start to swim away from you (not to fast because then it would be impossible), and once you get close enough, the whale will start going faster trying to get away from you. The only way to kill the whale is to shoot it with cannon, but because it is always moving, it will be near impossible to shoot it with cannons. Unless, you harpoon it and ride along with the whale for a bit (similar to how whales have been hunted in the past). After riding with the whale for a few minutes, the whale will then become tired and stop moving then allowing pirates to barrage the whale and hopefully kill it. If it doesn’t die after a couple of minutes, the whale will raise its tail and splash the water dealing knock-back to any ship that is to close. The whale then will start to swim again and then cycle will continue until you kill the whale.

The rewards can be whale oil, blubber, or whale meat.

There also could be different variants like blue whale, whale shark, or the deadly killer whale that after it is done with the tired phase, will (instead of water tail slapping) will come bite the boat and then run away.

Also just to clarify, I don’t dislike the hunter’s call guild. I think it’s a really fun concept and experience, but I think this could bring some life and thrilling aspect back to the hunter’s call.

  • Whale hunting is not likely to be introduced for the same reason that slave trading will not be. It might have been part of the story of 18th maritime history, but it is no longer politically correct. We have the meg. That’s the closest we will get.

I think its a good idea, the more u can do in the game the better. As there isn't much to do.
Allthou if I was able to upgrade my ship with lets say another deck where I can place another line of cannons. [mod edited] to shoot them on my command.

Next to this, the harpoon was 9/10 times used to shoot whales. Not rocks to turn u ship around or pickup chests from the port. Allthou harpooning the meg and riding it is quite funny. But you cant kill the meg with it.

  • Would totally love any type of hunter calls missions.

Ya That's what I was thinking, but I could only really think of whaling or crabbing. I thought whaling would be more fun.

Neither is killing people, but you can do that. Sharks are endangered yet you are encouraged to kill them for Hunter's Call rep and commendations. Why would whales be any different?

This. Whaling has a really dark and gruesome history. I don't believe Rare would ever go down that rabbit hole, nor should they.

I'm not sure what game you're playing, but it can't be Sea of Thieves.

I wouldn't mind ''hiring slaves'' which are just NPC's (people will call them slaves eventually) to shoot them on my command.

I don't even know how to begin explaining why that is wildly inappropriate. Nobody should have to.

Next to this, the harpoon was 9/10 times used to shoot whales. Not rocks to turn u ship around or pickup chests from the port. Allthou harpooning the meg and riding it is quite funny. But you cant kill the meg with it.

In actual fact, harpoons were only used on whales (10/10). They had no other practical use. This is one reason I thought they were a ridiculous idea in Sea of Thieves. Granted, they're immensely useful for collecting loot (and people, bizarrely enough), not to mention making absurd maneuvers. But as useful as they are, their inclusion added another a few drops to the ever-deepening "silly" pool in Sea of Thieves.

That said, just because in real life a harpoon's only function is to kill whales, that doesn't mean they should be used for that in the game. It's a firm "no".

  • Rare has gone on record multiple times about this, whaling will not ever be a feature in Sea of Thieves, nor should it be.

It's not about being PC, it's about the fact that whaling is just straight up wrong and not something to include in a silly pirate game game (much like slavery, again, for SUPER OBVIOUS REASONS).

    obviously a PvEr.

That is wrong on so many levels. First off, it tips the playing field toward the player who has been playing longer. Second, EVERYONE IS EQUAL, EVEN IF THEY ARE A DIFFERENT COLOR. sick and racist.

Oh yeah, 'slaves' weren't "hired." Study up on the history of slavery, and then come back. Slavery is one of the sickest(in a sense of evil) ideas ever thought up.

  • Would be cool if we had to drag the Whale behind our ship with ropes to a Seapost. During that a Megalodon might want to steal it from you.
It's like a big cargo mission after you hunt it but for Hunters Call.

  • @surveyorpete "Slave trading" and whale hunting has a big difference, I don't even know why you mentioned that.
There are hunting games and even simulators where you can hunt Lions and other animals that wouldn't be possible in real life.
Assasin's Creed Black flag has Whale and shark hunting for an example.

  • @supersnipper60 He just used a wrong word I believe. Hiring pirate buddies or something would've been better.
Oh and he didn't say anything about color.
    Happy sailing!

  • Whaling is an abhorrent practice and should stay out of Sea of Thieves, period.

If you think the game is still empty as-is, you're not playing the right game.

  • I'd love to see additional Hunters call quests.
The only way i could think of whales and other exotic sea life making it's way into game for this faction would be in a "Document Fauna" type capacity.

Think having a Hunters Call specific item to compliment the Fishing Rod, maybe something be able to document the find while out at sea say a Session Journal of sorts that's able to be turned in to the Sea Posts for reputation and coin.
Or maybe even a item to Tag finds out in the world similar to a modern day marine biologists tagging equipment.

Both these ideas negate the questionable moral aspect that adding more passive sea life, Whales/Dolphins/Turtles etc, to the game could and or would bring as well as give the Hunters Call faction more depth in questing options.
    Just my thoughts.

Sorry but im in the opinion that there isn't much to do except for doing the same thing you allready did. Which are:
    (gold hoarders)
    Find treasures with a chart.
    Do a riddle.
    (Order of souls)
Go to a island and kill skeletons.
    (merchant allaince)
pick up goods from point A and bring it to point B without making it wet/breaking it or let it wither.
    Catch animals.
    (mixed loot)
    Killing random skeleton ships
    Doing a skull fort.
    Doing a fleet.

Like the new Thieves haven voyage. its basically gold hoarders, making you do a riddle and finding treasures on a chart. Sorry but, I did this on the launch of the game. Adding something in like this doesn't make you do something new.
The real new thing lately are the ghost ships voyage and the event.

What I posted there was nothing but sharing my opinion, like the rest of the people are. (in a less demanding way, like Blam320's last post) I dont understand why you only pointing out to me to refer to the subject. Which I am, sharing that I think its a good idea as its something totally different from what I placed above.
