What 'Roles' should there be on a ship?

  • If Sea of Thieves had an overwatch style Queueing system for roles on a ship, how would you define them? My friends and I are new and since 6 of us got the game at once we're constantly on different sized ships.

How would you define what 'roles' you'd split up on a ship and responsibilities to play better? Obviously everyone should know how to do everything, but who should be the shot caller, ect??

  • Galleon: Helm, Boarder, Cannons and Repair
    Brig: Helm, Boarder, Repair
    Sloop: Helm, Boarder

All of the roles overlap somewhat. Cannon can be a secondary boarder. All players use cannons and manage sails when able to without affecting their primary role.

This is just my thoughts. I'm sure you'd get a ton of different answers based on someone's playstyle.

  • at minimum you need to have a helmsman and a repairer. others can cannon, board, help repair when needed, etc.

eta: as far as 'shot-calling', when the helmsman says 'raise the front sail', raise the front sail. when the repairer says 'i need bails!!', go bail. imo if you go that route you dont really need a 'captain' and all the drama that can introduce.

  • In order of importance:

Helmsman- on the wheel, runs rear sails, with help on cannons and repairs if needed.

Ship Wright- runs repairs and ship logistics (map, cooking, resource management), runs main sails, with help on cannons if needed

x2 deckhands/ vangaurd- deckhands focus on cannons and sails whereas the vangaurd focuses on boarding tactics. It depends on your preferences as a crew but you dont need both you can do fine without boarders or dedicated deckhands.

  • Me and my friends galleon roles:
    Captain/Cannoneer : Me
    Cannoneer/Repair/water bailer: Callumn120zz
    Directions/repair: PizzaPower004
    Cannoneer/Boarder/Crows Nest: Leetap999.

There are no real roles aboard a ship , i think that Rare did this on purpose in order to get to know the crew and how it acts...i sail mostly in a Brigantine and there we have a Helmswoman who steers us around towards and through many situations...When in a shipfight she swaps with our Captain and does cannons, sails and help me bail when i ask for help...my role is repairing , sailhandling and cannonshooting , i hardly ever sail as i'm notoriuos for putting holes in the ship...Our Captain reads the map , lines out the strategy which can chnge every second depending on many factors, he too handles sails , bails when needed and shoots the cannons or board ships...

You may put yer crew in roles as long as everybody helps the other one when the emergency calls for it...Don't keep sticking to yer guns when you hear screams for help with bailing or repairing...Your ship is the most important player , it may be free in cost but it carries your loot , you may lose it but the change to win everything back is not that great...Every role you may make must be in service for ship and crew ,otherwise you may lose a lot of ships and loot before you realize this..
