Lost Souls - Ferryman Side Quest

  • A new side quest for the adventuring pirates.
Talking to the Ferryman, he will explain that some souls have managed to return back to the world of the living.

Gifting you a special lantern which appears in your quest radial, you are tasked with finding these souls and returning them to the ferry.

Here I have two ideas for how this works

    Option A:
The lantern has no light and instead acts as a vessel (container) to hold the souls.
The souls are represented as small luminescent balls of cloud that float around islands and water.
The more souls you collect the brighter your lantern, the brighter the lantern the bigger the reward.

    Option B:
The ferryman tells you of an island infested with lost souls.
The lantern starts with a dull ghostly glow which burns brighter the closer you are to a soul, the souls are invisible until the lanterns light comes into contact with the soul (much like the tall tale The Fate Of The Morning Star).

A small reward for each soul retrieved, maybe achievements introduced with it, with enough returned to the ferryman, he could reward you with some spectral weapon cosmetics.

  • @sailorkek Lorewise, this sounds like the exact opposite of the Ferryman's purpose - it's due to his good graces that we do not pass on into the void, and instead are ourselves returned to life.

  • @galactic-geek I think you could write the story to keep with the lore: Perhaps these souls have departed the body but didn't make it to the ferry of the damned (think the souls floating above a downed pirate before they are rezzed).

It would be your job to help find and collect them so that they can be set free on the ferry and allowed to walk back through the doors to their bodies.

  • @galactic-geek theres the quote from him when you ask

"*Why do you save us from the Sea of the Damned?**"

    And he replies

"You think you are saved? Hmmm.
I will speak no more of this.
Linger not among the dead, pirate...
There will be plenty of time for that on the day that my portal does not open for you."

I took from that that the door doesnt open for some, we as pirates are just lucky we get to return.

  • Make the lantern an item that can be dropped and stolen. There shouldn't be any reward without risk.

  • @rowdy-reid I agree with you but I dont know how you would take the lantern into the ferry with you seeing as any item held is dropped on death.

  • @sailorkek I know it would change the idea a bit, but flameheart commands ghost vessels and crews. If we were to turn the bounty in to, say the reapers, it might fit into the lore, and keep it all neat and tidy. Maybe the ferryman could offer locations, or sell voyages. The lantern could be collected from reapers or something.

  • @rowdy-reid if anything else I'd say the order of souls, I'm not fond of the reapers myself, I think that looking for ships to sink is enough for them haha
