I don't understand why you would buy ship, gun etc cosmetics with real money. This takes away the whole purpose of the game: doing voyages, getting money, buying cosmetics, repeat.
By buying cosmetics with real money you basically render the ingame currency useless because: why would you choose cosmetics bought with ingame currency over using cosmetics bought with real money.

For some, they do this to support the future development of the game. Pure and simple.
A lot of players have been playing this game for 3 years after paying the cost of the boxed game. Servers, developers and studios need money to survive, some players feel this is the better way to do this.
If you can afford to and want to the Emporium allows this game to keep going and be supported for as long as possible.
However, if you choose not to or simply can't, there is no downside - Everything is cosmetic and all game content is available to you no matter how you choose to pay or play.
@musicmee I understand that aspect, I would love to support the devs. Thing is that right now I don't want to purchase the cosmetics as this would take the whole feeling of progress out of the game for me. I would love seeing some non pay to win additions which can be solely purchased with money, such as pets.

Totally get that - And this is why this approach has been taken.
None of the cosmetics via the Emporium are pay to win - there is no levelling or added bonus to any of the items available there, they are all purely cosmetic.
In recent updates free items have been given out to players via the emporium - This update sees the plead emote available for free.
Twitch Drops and In-Game Events also offer ways to grab emporium items from the past too! I would keep your eye out for them.
Ancient Coins (premium currency) can now be earnt via Seasons and Ancient Skellies. Both free methods.
There are lots of ways to grab these premium cosmetics without spending a single gold coin!
Most likely the reason for the paid cosmetic items is to cover server costs and future updates. If they would have made a loot-box oriented system like in some other games, then they would be criticized for that (remember the Star Wars Battlefront 2 loot-box fiasco happened 1 year before the launch of Sea of Thieves).
Now the game is shifting to the battle pass model (Season pass) where you can grind for additional loot and buy the Plunder Pass for additional exclusive loot. Some people might question this choice since it's something you usually would find in a free-to-play game.
microsoft could pay for the server they can also put a lot games in their gamepass so i think would be no problem for ms paying for the servers.i play sot since 3 years via gamepass and purchased 70 bucks around. it makes sense for future development yes ,but i dont like it when i have the feeling the best cosmetics goes first into the emporium.
I used to buy a lot of them just to have them in Arena. Emotes primarily, than clothes, pets and weapons. Arena (especially lobby) always feels like high school where everybody trying to strut their things. Plus its fun wen many people participate. So for example Emotes like half lobby filled with barrel emotes) Dancing emotes.
Plus pets, made additional strut your stuff need :)I regularly buy stuff on the emporium. And frankly I rarely use what I buy.
Currently my outfit + weapons are 100% free stuff, my ship has only the hull and sails that are bought with real money (Hull Royal sea squirrel and sails SoT RPG).
So far I spent around 150€ on the game, mostly because when I love a game and play it a lot, I always try to regularly give some money as I understand that it needs it to survive. ^^
